I found those only works well if you spinblock glitch it to your plane
my first plane was also my first craft amd it only had 2 30mm simple weapons facing forward. i never put ai in it because my pc bricked, but manual flight was great
Mine has missiles and rapid fire >40mm cannons using ap head and secondary heat warheads.
I use simple lasers on turrets on my planes. Works suprisingly well
Actually when start I learn how to build planes, I found that planes fly around than 125ms is a pretty good speed as they can pretty much out run APS attack and giving a hard time for detection system to have a good position detection, with adjusting the AI movement to let them doing banding turns and slip pitch can easily out run any attack except lasers (just as boraderwise mention), and use flares to distract missiles and that make you craft pretty hard to get shot down.
But when I build my plane, I tend to use pid to keep the plane stabile so it can make the attack more accurate and the missile or bomb can hit the target easier. Plane flying in stabile path can use the projectile avoidance ai to create a dodging movement so it won't likely get hit as they fly towards the target.
Anyone building super, super cheap, I recommend still using CJEs, but forget efficiency. You'll be zippy as anything due to low mass even with stupidly low mats consumption rates.
Most expensive parts in a plane will always be the AI and Missiles (if you go Missiles that is). Using a single detection 360 camera on each one, and including the thingy that lets you share detection is quite effective.
Finally, small missiles (for absolutely _dirt_ cheap damage against smaller craft) have a 1x variant that's less than a quarter the price of the 4x block. It sacrifices space for cost, but it's perfectly adequate for anti-squirrel/small flier duty.
I have a seizure inducing craft going at 100~m/s with four small missiles, a healing tentacle and a repair bot at 1k cost. It's gloriously fun building small haha.

Quick question though, what factors made you choose 360 cameras over radar? Also, do your planes only need a target tracking detection system if they have guns in addition to or instead of missiles? (Since most missiles have their own more precise guidance included).
I'm getting back in to FTD after a decently long while away and I was never good at it to begin with lol. I played a bit since the update that added detection systems but I tend to go overboard and include more sensors than I probably need.
So fun fact about IRL planes/wings: If you notice old planes tented to have much bigger wings (for their size) and new modern planes tend to have smaller wings.
It's all about thrust:weight ratio. The faster you go not only do you need less wingspan, but the downsides (drag) get much worse. As such since most FtD planes tend to have absurd thrust:weight ratios they actually fly better with small wings.
TLDR: Not needing much in the way of wing span isn't FtD giving the middle finger to Real Life, it's just it's uncanny attempt to mimic it in a way that almost makes sense but since it''s so close the little errors seem bigger than they actually are.

And then you get those weird planes that are all wing, all the time, but they tend to be slower so it's ok.

It's amazing how I've learned so much from borderwise about FTD, from actual mechanics and how things work to straight up just to take the time and experiment and test, I find it fantastic

Such a lifesaver. New to the game, this helped a *ton!* Successfully made a pesky little fly, and I'm eventually gonna turn it into a nuke kamikaze :)
If you want to make a plane that uses an APS gun and does a strafe run just dont use wings at all, use thrusters to control roll, yaw, and pitch. AI can finely control thrusters better because the AI isn’t trying to compensate for the wings creating lift instead it has much more control over altitude and pitch. Thrusters are also easier to fine tune for smoother movement

Екатерина Азанова ye i know but still, plus nobody would be able to tell it’s not a “plane” as categorized by the game if you didn’t use wings and then you don’t have to haggle w the annoyance of balancing your plane with the lift and mass, thrusters will do all the balancing for you

Aesthetically, Detection systems are not a great pick for airplanes, as they generally stick out in weird places. ship-to-ship transmitters can be your friend for keeping a build small, but if you must, at least put a tracker system on it. Radar alone isn't great unless you're going with missiles. A true challenge is an aircraft with guns. Using a breadboard for your PID's can also trim space.

Just made hull mounted laser blasters (Q1 short laser combiner) for my interceptor. The whole laser is just 12m long, 2m tall and only 1m wide, and 3m where the the large pumps are. It does about 1800 damage with 40 AP every second and has a range of 350m. It uses single imput laser cavities to save space.
BorderWise is the best guide you tuber. Got 500 hours on ftd still can make a ship that can 1v1 a crossbones
i put ring shields on almost all my planes. that and applique armour. just a ring around the main wing. since you need area for it anyway. protects top and bottom (which is basicly everything) very well from flack/frag and will bounce lucky cram shots prety well.

when making a plane in FTD just no that it doesnt believe in bullshit rules you can stuff wings inside the plane itself and it will fly perfectly fine and build the wings out of blocks instead of actually wing pieces. less easy to get shot down

I spend loads of time experimenting.
If anything, most vaguely plane-like shapes can fly with enough power.
Just disregard the dedicated wing blocks unless you want to load your craft heavily and still want to fly.
How do you spread the blocks apart to change things inside the plane? And how do you turn some blocks invisible to look inside?

I had an idea of an underwater aircraft carrier, like a submarine that deployed aircraft with a turbine or two to bring them to the surface and then have them take off. could this work? I don't care about being viable, just want to do it for the giggles.

I made an ME262, it can go at 140m/s has APS guns and missiles. Its speed can dodge enemy fire. Does weight still slow down aircraft or its just using slopes and wedges to mitigate drag?
Weight just affects acceleration and the amount of lifting power you need. Having an aerodynamic shape is more important I'd say.
@@BorderWise12 if it can beat an Aerotyrant alone, given enough patience, then I think its a capable heavy fighter. It did beat the godly one, but it took way longer.
I recently made a plane that breaks all of these rules
It has absolutely massive wings
It has a twinbarreled 200mm APS cannon
It has metal armor along the mid-section
And it moves in a relatively straight line so it can aim effectively
*it has two custom jets which propells it at about 170m/s so its fine*

How do you get the bombs to land so close the target? I'm really bad at timing the launchers to fire a the right time.
That little bomber flies very low, so the bombs don't have much time to scatter. You also might need to set firing restrictions on the missile controller and a maximum range on the Local Weapon Controller.

Hello BorderWise, Thanks for this video, I managed to make a somewhat flying torpedo bomber. However I have an issue with custom thrusters, I have to use the small ones as the big ones seems to procure too much thrust, but then it's flying way too slow for my tastes, something like 64 m/s, and sometimes the thrusters shut down randomly mid flight, for seemingly no reason as its cruising altitude is set to 250m, is it a bug or am I doing something wrong ?
Yer welcome! Do you have enough fuel, are your engines big enough and is the hull aerodynamic?
@@BorderWise12 I checked and I have way more fuel than needed ( I'm still in testing phase in designer mode btw ), the small custom thrusters just shut down randomly, I even checked the AI settings about idle thrust which is set to 100%. Hull is as aerodynamic it can be with vanilla game. I'll look at it tomorrow s it's past 2am here. Hello from Belgium btw ^^

You can't. Best you can do is use mimic blocks and hide the image somewhere.
Or use light blocks.

For extra dodginess, I recommend looking into projectile avoidance. ONce you get it set it, you got flying squirrel on steroids.

You need free space in front of the intakes and exhausts to draw air in. They don't work when they're blocked.

Check if the centre of mass is good, if the centre of drag is good and whether there's sufficent pitch control.
why does my plane just randomly go up? I might've missed something in the video.
The usual culprits for that are inadequate pitch control or misaligned thrust.

I've been trying to build fighters and bombers from ww2 recently and I've come to the conclusion that it's impossible to build a replica twin engine prop planes in this game. ;-;
Well, not impossible. Just very difficult, and the end result is probably not a very meta craft.
Especially to scale.
I am just terrible at building the plane itself, just not creative in that aspect. However if I’m handed an aircraft with no armaments I can turn it into a killing machine
i litrally put it to 0.25 times speed of the example build, replicated on my AC-130 and it wont stop going to the sky, cant control it at all, wont go left, right, roll, or down only up, I got everything posted and needed
I have turned off the AI and tried to control it manually and controls dont do anything
the weight distribution is even, I Even tried to make it front heavy with a load of lead in the cockpit, and even with the weight 25% forward it still goes to the sky
why cant i control anything, i obviously have a control wheel. Weights perfect, propulsion is balanced and strong enough, I tried adding 10x more wings and airlerons everything? what im i missing im tearing my hair out, 1000hrs never could figure this
From what you're saying, I'd suggest not using wing blocks at all. They're too strong, and tend to make planes uncontrollable. Also make sure that front and back pitch control is set to respond to the correct AI input.
Yeah idk how but I built a plane that was kinda like the gr 1 at some point and it was so good it was extremely smooth, you could build on it while flying without getting sick and then the next plane I build Is just a total Piece of shit that doesn't work and even resembles it alot
