  • South Ngkala Rocks, K'gari Fraser Island. Some footage of the Forester going through Ngkala rocks.
Got told by a lot of people we'd get bogged everywhere, and after not getting bogged at all, thought we'd try out what is probably the hardest part of driving on Fraser.
Before this, we'd crossed the island from King Fisher where we got on the island, to Eurong, up the beach to Happy Valley, crossed Eli Creek multiple times, taken multiple inland tracks, both hard and soft, drove through a lot of articulated tracks where two opposite corners were lifted and never got stuck. The Max tracks stayed firmly bolted to the roof rack.
I think we have the VDC to thank for most of our success.
Car has a 2" lift in the front and 2.5" in the rear, larger tyres and a custom skid plate made from Ally covering the engine and gearbox. Otherwise, it's a bone stock NA 2.5L with Dual Range.

That's awesome mate. Love watching the 'soft roaders' driving past bogged 'real 4x4s'.

People forget the Subaru's actually permanently send power to all 4 wheels and tend to lump them in with the other "AWD" cars that only send power to all four temporarily. VDC helps a lot too, you can see it moving the power around and finding the grip.

Reminds me of my Suzi Sierra days of the mid 90’s just gliding through Indian Head bypass, Leisha Track (Double Island) middle road (Moreton) whilst big cruisers and patrols with all the gear would be bogged to the axle. The look on OLD mate’s faces as a fresh 18-21 year old passes by with no chance of being bogged was priceless!

Goes to show how important weight of the vehicle plays in its capabilities, rock on!

Light weight definitely helped, but the tyre pressure was the biggest factor, all the cars stuck were at 20+ PSI

      Flotation is needed on sand.

We drove through there in the dry no problems in our Forester. Just drop the pressures and you will be fine as Subis are pretty unstoppable in the sand.

I did have that expectation, I've driven my WRX on some seriously low traction surfaces without issue, but I've never done anything like this before, so it was all new to me really

I've got an SH too, and whe I'm on Fraser, you get looked at like what are you doing here? In 3 years it's never been bogged.

Doesn't surprise me, the only point that it looked like getting bogged was coming back up that sand hill in this video, and it didn't get bogged, I still had more PSI to drop too if I needed. I'm sad we had to sell the car, it was so understated and unstoppable.

I took my 2.5l CVT Outback to the Birbie. Yes exactly like you siad. Most 4*4 drivers laugh at me when i was deflating the tyres at the beach access car park. until i slowly and smoothly drove past those bogged 4wd probably they would change some stubborn ideas😂 Now I have KO2 AT tyres and bash plate, I'm going Inskip shortly, and finally will go to Fraser

Did you lift it? any CV joint problem at all?
I have only put a set of AT tyres on my Outback and I went to the Bribie very easily.
I hope I can take it to the Fraser someday but just worrying about the approaching angle and the ground clearance.
    Any advice please?
    Cheers

2 inch lift in the front and 2.5 in the rear. Lift kit from Subilift Aus, we had one CV pop out of place when it was on the hoist but tbh the guy somehow managed to break the knuckle while he was disassembling it to change the bushes, so I'd say that was operator error more than anything. Regreased and reassembled it and it didn't give us any dramas at all.
Fraser's not the big bad thing everyone makes it out to be, we cruised everything at 18PSI, and did this at 12PSI and didn't even look like getting stuck. I did a lot of stops and starts in really fluffy dry sand at 18PSI, the cars so light it just floats. As far as approach angle goes, I don't think there's much at Fraser that'll give you grief. Just be sensible. This was my first time ever driving any car on sand too

@@GingerNingerGamesSorry for late reply. Thanks for sharing. I took the Outback to the Rainbow and Cooloola twice, no problems. I drove the inland track to Rainbow as well. Not like 4wd, I drove slowly when bumpy. Considering the approaching, I agree that we should drive at a reasonable speed and everything will be fine. I have installed two front recovery points but so far these are just decoration. Light weight is the king. I'll visit Fraser shortly and share my experience if any. Thanks again
