The hold down is an inserta clamp for build pro welding tables with a new end piece, it should fit your hardy hole too. The pin keeps it from falling through and the groove grabs the anvil face so it doesn't slide up under pressure. I made one for you and one for me and I'm done. I don't have time to sell them or make more. The hardy adapter was a prototype idea, if it helps with production I'll still call that a win. I didn't have an 11/16" dia holdfast to try it. Merry Christmas to all.
I must say this was a a real surprise to receive in the mail. Great idea and I am sure it will receive lots of use. Thank you very much for sending it out. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
I just went up and tried it in the hardy hole, works great. Very ingenious. Thanks again
@@BlackBearForge the adapter probably works if it have a tighter fit to the hole,
You don't see a lot of people going out of their way to repay those who have helped them. It's good to see there are still some decent people out there.
Are these for sale?
I am no longer physically able to work in the smithy. My Baron Dupetrenes has spread into my left shoulder causing what the surgeon calls lock shoulder. I had three surgeries on my palms to remove the lumps from my tendons but they just kept growing back. Most likely because everything I do requires the use of my hands. I got sidelined by a diabetic ulcer on my left foot the beginning of fall and luckily they didn’t have to take my foot. I spent about 6 weeks laced up while it healed but even now walking is painful in that spot. I still watch all your videos and have them saved in a folder so my son can watch them. He has two friends who are interested in working with him when they all graduate next year. He is planning on going to a trade school here for welding and it’s close enough that he can work weekends in the smithy. There are no smiths within 100 miles of us and lots of farmers are always looking for welders to fix broken equipment without having to take it somewhere. He is working on building a truck to carry all his equipment on. Generator stick wire feed and his gas set up. Like me he likes old trucks and is working one off with a family friend who owns a auto repair shop. He is pretty much set up to take over the farm when I am gone so I am happy about that. I want to thank you for all the videos you do. He has learned way more by watching them and going out to do projects without me than I ever could have taught him. I think it’s something genetic in our family. We are stubborn and want to do it on our own. I was the same with my father and he his. Again thanks for the great videos. Kagitaka
I have a pair of James spike tongs. I think you'll find they work way better than the other style. There a great set of tongs and he really goes all out to give them a nice finish as well. You scored today John.
Columbia is just a short drive up the hill for me. Been there and watched Parrott's Blacksmith Shop a few times. A few years ago, my 10 year old saw some double headed nails turned into little knives up there and decided that he wanted to do that. He hasn't stopped since! Any time I go to forge, he is right there with me! Thank you for all your information in all your videos, they have helped immensely!
Those james duncan spike tongs are the best thing since sliced bread!
That was Very nice!!!
Great Idea!!!😇👍👍
I have a pair of Mr. Duncan's railroad spike tongs. They work in all four directions on the head. Rock solid and amazing! Definitely not flimsy
Merry Christmas to you and your family, and a happy, healthy and prosperous new year
The square adapter looms like it can be an adapter for the clamp if the round part is turned down more.
My guess would be that you have to drill out the hardy tool to the diameter of the turned down part. That way you can use the hold fast in the hardy hole
I use an old 12" Jorgensen 'F' clamp. If you remove the rivet from the end of the bar you can remove the sliding clamp. I insert the head from the bottom of either anvil or work bench. the result is an adjustable hold down that is easily removed. Note. If you buy a new clamp be sure to remove the plastic cover before using it at the anvil.
I love watching your videos. I took black Smithing in high school. They should bring it back. Well done.
I have the 460 Fontanini anvil as well and have been trying various hold down schemes -- The clamp is next on the list.
Nice. And good evening from Australia.
Very cool spike holder. And super nice gifts all the way round. You deserve the credit for what you do for people , and , how you have affected their lives for the better. Thanks for great content John. Have a wonderful day today.
Thank you so much 😀
Merry Christmas John!
Merry Christmas
Thanks for sharing with us John.🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻✋🏻✋🏻
Good morning! Looks like a pretty slick hold down.
Always fun to open the gifts. Spike tomahawk sounds intresting. 👍👍🔥💥💥
Also really like the tongs James sent.
Merry Christmas John.
I’ll be watching for the tomahawk video.
Merry Christmas
You're a good man John. Thanks for your content as I've learnt a lot over the years. Merry Christmas. Cheers
Happy Solstice John. Missed this the day it came out because my child's BD is the 21st so we were celebrating.
Happy Solstice
I've always found square profile hold downs bite the pritchel better and tend not to twist. Must be the four points of contact over the two a round one offers its hole.
Something about the nature of square pegs in round holes comes to mind. I know the intended meaning of the phrase has changed dramatically over time. But early in the piece I imagine it was understood.
May Jennet have a very Merry Christmas.
You're such a cool person John! Thanks for the knowledge you share! I've learned so much from your videos. Always looking forward to the next one. Hope you guys enjoy the holidays!
Good score, thank you for sharing.
Nice gifts John, I’ll have to have a think about the square adaptor before I make my guess! Love the donut tongs and photograph as well!
Merry Christmas, Thanks for all the videos this year.
Merry Christmas
Great to see how many folks appreciate you and your teaching. I learn from you with every video. Happy Solstice to you and all your family!!
Happy Solsice

Hi John, Mail call is always good, once and a while there is a bonus, makes it even better.
Merry Christmas to you and your family 🙏🏼🎄☃️🎅
Merry Christmas
Another fun video John. Thanks...
All your work is wonderful and beautiful
Pretty cool tool, nice job man...merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
the hold fast jig would work if it was the full length of the hardy hole. This way you could use the clamp and a hold fast in cinjuction.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from warmer (44F and rain) South Carolina.
Merry Christmas
Have a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year.

Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas Big guy, hope you and the family enjoy the chestnuts around the fire ( and maybe get a dusting of snow ) I'm in 32 / 90 summer heat in Queensland Australia. bbq's and bevies for us ! see ya in the New Year.
Merry Christmas
I sent you a video a couple of years ago showing you how to take a pair of the c clamp style vise grips and cut off the top fixed side turn it over and weld on a cold roll that fits your Pritchett hole on the jaw that moves and that’s even faster than that or if you get the self adjusting vise grips, and the hardy hole attachment is probably if you want to weld the f-clamp to it so you can use the hardy instead of the Pritchett hole
Thank you for this video John. I used to use a London pattern anvil so a traditional hold fast worked. Now I use a continental pattern Rigid and the hold fast doesn't work.
That thing is an adapter for the hold down to be used in the hardy hole. He gave you two options
Neat tool!
Like the spike head tongs ,Perhaps looking a bit heavy and trim down to lighter
Again learning from you and others
Thanks for demonstration ideas that are polished and just the great ideas isn't the question of a need often inspiring us to polish together
Merry christmas good sir
👏👍Merry Christmas too you and your Family God bless. 🇺🇸
Merry Christmas
i love the community you have here
Thanks,
I think the block with hole its to do a pritchel hole when you use the holder in the original pritchel hole i think
Very nice mail call video John. Good to see one of those. Got some good tools there. Hopefully you get great use out of them for many years to come. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge on. God bless.
Good morning. I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of years, always on my television, so this is my first time commenting. The format and content is outstanding. I was a welder and tank builder by trade, blacksmithing started a couple of years ago. I’ve learned a great deal as far as technique from your videos, so thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are like my favorite shop teacher.
Thanks again - Mike
I bet if that adapter were longer it would work.
Isn't the square adapter used for the hold-down but in the hardy hole?
That's what I was thinking too
That was also my thought.
There is a key hole in the round one that holds it together that is not in the hardy hole adapter. But still it should work I would think
The round hole in the hardy adapter is sized much smaller, so it would need to be adapted.
Awesome
Nice thumbnail lol
I’ll bet the round piece you turned down fits in the Hardy hole piece.
With the coming))) I saw a hydraulic press in your workshop, is it possible to tell about it in more detail?
Here is an old video I did on that press
Question on your chili forge. Did you have to make any changes for altitude? I am setting up at 8500 feet.
They provided a larger set of mig tips to re jet for the higher altitude. So I would consult with Chile Forge to see what they recommend. You're another 2,000 feet higher than we are here.
John. Just found your channel. Love it! Turns out, I grew up very near you in Westcliffe. My family's been there for generations. I'm just getting into forging and have inherited a lot of 17-4 stainless rods in various diameters. Anybody out there have thoughts about that type of metal for forging projects, specifically knives?
Welcome aboard! I don't use stainless myself.
Good mornings
🍻
Looks like you lost some weight? I hope you are doing well.
That looks like an adapter for the new hold down in case you don’t have a pritchel hole.
I wish I had you as you as a grandpa
Not first to comment nevertheless ALWAYS a pleasure and learning experience to watch You videos John.
Does the adapter for the Prichard hole fit the adapter for the hardy hole
No, it doesn't
As a professional machinist and, an aspiring blacksmith, would you be kind enough to please show a better view of your lathe? Thanks for giving us some of your knowledge and inspiration.
Anyone have a link handy to those RR Spike tongs?
