    I get asked how I make money as a youtuber, and today I detail some of my side hustle, with me completing 4 builds in one afternoon. These are PCs that are put together from either deals or donations, and they help support the channel a lot! Also the new studio is in constuction mode at the moment, so thank you guys a tonne for all the continued support. Really appreciate it, the channel of YES has never felt so good. The content is going to keep flying and I will make do on those promises, even ones that I made a year ago... just need to get into a bigger space to work (which will come very soon). I also talk about the recent Patreon dilemma, which they have backpedalled on, but perhaps the damage was already done? Also near the end I do compare the Rota K401 Case Vs. The Fractal Design Focus G, both cost me around the same, $85 AUD (about $65 USD).
    Check out the Fractal Design Focus G here: amzn.to/2Anr1Vb
    As for the Rota K401... I got it from MSY, not sure where to buy it from online :(.

    DDR4 RAM prices is the primary reason I decided not to build a Ryzen 5 1600 system but instead build using a used HP workstation with a Xeon almost equivalent to the R5 1600 instead. Almost $200 for just 16 GB of DDR4 RAM is just too rich for me.

    • @itsneight1260
      @itsneight1260 7 років тому +5

      $200 for 16GB of DDR4 RAM should be too rich for anyone. The fact that people are still paying it is just lunacy if you ask me.

      I bought an HP Z420 tower. It had a E5-1650 v2, 64 GB of ECC DDR3 1866, a 500 GB HDD with Win 7 on it, Quadro K600 card, 600 watt PSU and Windows 7 Pro COA for $497.85 USD. I have a GTX1060 6GB and a Samsung 850 Evo 256GB SSD from a previous system that I'll be adding to it. Should be a pretty capable system.

      If your Xeon is the W3570, the E5 I have is about twice the performance (Passmark of about 6,000 for the W3570 vs about 12,000 for my E5). The W3570 is 4 cores, 8 threads and the E5 1650 v2 is 6 cores, 12 threads. My previous system had an i5 2500K which is about equivalent to the W3570. I actually would have not upgraded if I didn't have a 34" 100hz 1440p ultrawide, gaming on that wasn't as smooth as I would have liked. For everything else I did, that level of performance was more than enough.
      When doing my search, I found plenty of complete Z420 towers with the 3.2GHz 6c/12t E5-1650 v1 Xeon (Passmark of about 11,000) with 8GB RAM in the $200-300 range. Definitely a good price for only slightly lower performance than what I ended up with. I opted to spend a bit more though for more memory and a slightly faster v2 Xeon (which can use faster RAM too, which I wanted for the already aging DDR3 system). The other z420 I considered had the same v2 Xeon I have, but 8GB of ECC DDR3 1600 for $100 less. Although ECC DDR3 isn't too expensive, it was still about $60-70 for 2 sticks of 8GB 1600 so I just went ahead and got the system with the RAM maxed out. The ECC DDR3 1866 RAM I ended up with is still pretty expensive for whatever reason... they're about $50 for an 8GB stick, extra $100 to get 8 of them was a no-brainer even though that much RAM might be overkill for me right now.

      you might be better off selling the computer and just building another system, hold on to that RX480 though. even a $200 Z420 with the E5 1650 v1 would be better than trying to upgrade what you already have. for the moment, I don't think going from 8GB to 12 GB would make enough difference to be worth the effort.

    • @MacTX
      @MacTX 7 років тому

      Just look at the RAM chips you have now and get similar. That's how I would have done it if my RAM wasn't already maxed out.

      Good lesson as to why you should always check the specs yourself.
      For anyone wondering what I mean, if that PSU were marketed correctly it'd only be rated at 204W because it can only do 17A over the +12V rail. So you see 775 and think it's a 775W PSU, but it's actually only 204W.

    Brian, love the vid! Love to see the progress you're making on the new studio! It always takes time to get this sort of thing done, especially when you have to do the work yourself. Went though some tough times last year when my house caught fire and also had major sewer damage... 7 months of remodeling, plumbing, and wiring for the downstairs at $37,000 USD. Paid off the debt 2 weeks ago! I respect you for the continued content production. Hoping this spring I can update a room upstairs for a new studio myself. Cheers mate! All the best!

    I also would like to do the same, search for cheap used part, refurbish them and sell to someone who need them. Just due to limited connection, I don’t know where to look for.
    I had been selling new parts where I get from local pc parts supplier, but the competition is quite tight in Malaysia as there are so many young entrepreneurs start the same business. Now I stopped selling pc parts online.
    But I hope I could resume but buy used, refurbish and sell them off.

    The used PC market is not as dangerous as Best Buy, Newegg, or other system sellers would have you believe. Sometimes we just don't have the space anymore or are looking to upgrade to new hardware. I have sold medium gaming systems for the price I paid just for the case or motherboard alone. I don't have the time to go back and forth on emails or text, so I even go cheaper if you are willing to take the leftover boxes and parts.
    If you are looking to make some small hustle like Brian and have time, I recommend checking on craighlist for sellers like me (just make sure you never go to a secluded area no matter how good the deal is).
