Looks good, but is it proper to paint in the same bay/booth as where you were sanding? Too much risk with dust particles. Also, don't you have to blend the paint in to the door as well?
I like the double putty knife thing. We use plastic spreaders here in America. Maybe this Dutch guy's on to something. I'm also surprised that he doesn't use an interface pad with the RO sander in the finer grits as we normally always do with 320 and above.
Wow must have been cold in the shop to have that much working time with the filler! Here in Maryland right now with the temp and humidity you can barely spread a 6in area before it starts setting up.
I know this is what I do for a living. It looks like a lot of hours for a repair. Was just curious if it was for teaching purposes. Thanks for a kind reply!
Insurance wouldn't even consider paying to fix this in Canada. It would be a RR (remove and replace) here. Quicker and more cost effective to splice in and section rather than putting that much time into pulling that large of an area and doing that much rough out of the metal, leads to that much time in bodywork, time for application and curing of primer, sanding of primer, and then paint. Compared to splice in new metal, bodywork the splice. Spot Prime the splice. And sand and paint. Time is money I would lose money doing it this way. It's not a wrong way, it's just a slow way that uses more product and has more down time, making it not worth the time unless it's your own vehicle where your not getting paid
Understand, here is different we cant make money on buying new parts somtimes it cost us money. For example new part cost us 200 plus 2 hour work 55 a hour you make 110. Well here's a journeyman body man/ painter making some comments. He did a nice job! The only things I might do differently are when it comes to applying the filler...fill in the lows first in a nice tight coat, and don't do any sanding except maybe a grating of any high spots...put another tight coat over that and don't sand that either just knock down any highs...and then put one last tight coat over the whole area. Straighten and sand that. But this is a minor difference, he did what works well for him and got a great result! I love the fact that he uses his ORBITAL to shape the filler...every since those stupid car customizing shows have come on T.V. everybody is obsessed with BLOCK sanding everything within an inch of it's life...good for him...I learned to do the same because the orbital is like a block , but much faster. The other thing I might do differently is not sand the filler so fine, 180 grit tops for me. But then again , his fine sanding might be because of the primer/paint system...maybe he's not using a high build so he 's going with less fill but also less shrinkage. I totally agree with trying to repair the panel instead of replacing it, and it was a very good repair . Once you open up a fixed panel you open yourself up to way more complications with sealing, rusting and rattling.
