Great video man, I will definitely be using this in the classroom with my students. And thank you for pointing out the fact that ‘jumping’ in launch is one of the worst things you can do on any site, especially coastal, I’ve seen so many people end up flying backwards straight into rotor!.. I teach my students just to simply run and keep running until you’re up and flying Thanks for sharing Jaye from Aus 👊🏼
Hi Al, much clearer descriptions than people typically give. You describe you thought processes which is really useful. Any future videos will be really appreciated.
Very clear instruction. One of the best paragliding instructions videos I have seen. I am watching all the videos I can to decide if I can try paragliding safely and this video gives me confidence. Thank you I am subscribing.
1) Don't suntan your wing while waiting, unnecessary UV degradation 2) A helmet cam is a hook for your lines and a future epic crash. Get rid of any helmet cam
That's more for the advanced pilots - a beginner should get lots of groundhandling first before trying to attempt this at the coast... just my humble opinion... ;-)
One 'rule of thumb' I've heard at our local coastal site... If the whitecaps begin to persist for a solid "one-thousand-and-one" count, it's time to pack it in.
Hey Acro, very helpful video! I have a short question: if the Wind is so strong that you cant get to the ground and you flying backwards. What options do I have?
If you have a speedbar and the air isn't too turbulent, then using that is a good way to push forward. If you don't then your options are pretty limited. You would have to assess the ground behind you to find a suitable place to land which will probably in rotor turbulence. Avoiding this situation is incredibly important so hopefully some of the tips in this video will help you never have to come close!
I don't know the local rules at this spot and I've never done any costal flying (I learned to fly in Chamonix, all my flying is alpine thermal flying or occasionally soaring on valley breeze) but if the wind was strong I'd be setting up right on the ridge with my wing almost on the footpath. Is that not allowed or is there another reason not to?
The path is in a wind shadow so the wind is going up and over the path. See 2:03 and the area marked 'dead air'. It would be very difficult to pull you wing up from there into the airflow, because there is no wind on the ground. The path can also be busy with people so not a good idea to block it.
Not really as it depends on the site and the wind conditions. Generally you can feel the rotor at a site, take a wind indicator like a piece of ribbon and hold it in the air, or look at the direction the grass is blowing in for example.
@@acroal thanks..I have some vertical cliffs with mostly right angled tops, I always thought you would get rotor just at the cliff edge in this case and top landing would be out..
@@mickbrett1608 yeah the cliffs you describe cause the most rotor and are tricky to take off from and especially land on. Depending on the site, there may be a band of clean air just behind the cliff edge that is not in the lift band. But it could be very small and drifting too far back would be bad news! On some of the cliffs i fly, i can find a part of the cliff that is not so steep and launch from there, below the top of the cliff. Always make sure you have a beach to land on just in case!
I want to do this so bad
As someone who lives in Bridlington, I think I need to investigate this hobby more.

God that was the simplest and most concise explanation of coastal ridge flying I've seen on paragliding , ever!. Thank you so much. (From a beginner)
I'm really glad i was able to help 😊
Epic vid mate...have no idea what I'm doing gliding inland...nothing better than soaring along the beach
Beautiful slope to fly. Nice and straight.
Excellent video, very well explained 👏👏👏👏👍👍
Thanks! Really glad you enjoyed it 😁

Dew Point is good to know on your flying site so you don't get caught out by the Sea fog.
Great tip!
Really useful video. Thank you.
I have to try it one day
Really good video and advice, thanks for making and sharing! :)
Muy hermoso esta el lugar
Very helpful. Thank you for explaining thoroughly where the boundary of the rotor is. Subscribed :-)

Hi Al. Nice video thank you. I’m hoping to fly at Torrey Pines when I visit the States so will heed your advice. Cheers Jim

A really watchable, informative video. Any chance you could cover things to consider for hike n’ fly?
I'm planning to do some hike and fly in the near future so stay tuned!

Hi. Your base local ? any restrictions on someone kiting from this site.
Sorry found it in the Links.
Great clip thanks for posting.. Do you use a rule of thumb for where the rotor zone starts for
a given windspeed ?
Not really as it depends on the site and the wind conditions. Generally you can feel the rotor at a site, take a wind indicator like a piece of ribbon and hold it in the air, or look at the direction the grass is blowing in for example.

Genial
🤗🤗🤗
👏
i really wanna buy parachute and learn skills how to fly if there is strong wind can pull up in sky i'm afraid cuz i will not know how to land haha?
💯💯
It would be really nice to know where this is. there is no name, no geo-position, its hard to find out.
👏👏
👍
Hey man nice vid. thanks. by the way is september good wether for soaring in England? thanks Vítek
September can be ok. You never really know in the UK!
