Hello Orin. My name is Michael. I have a 25 year old peach tree. Its 12 foot tall semi dwarf, not sure cultivar. The shape is central leader. two years ago it beared fruit on almost every branch. Last year had flowers, no fruit. This year only minimal leaves & fruit within the central part of branches, all the way to the top. There are 5 foot long lower branches, 2-3 inches wide, as we go up the tree, branches are about 1-2 inches wide or less, & 3 feet long or less, with a foot spacing between branching as we go up. With that said, the lowest branches look dead or dying as they are losing some bark nearest the trunk. Should we cut those all the way back, or about 50 %, this summer & should we wait until next winter to prune, we want fresh growth & we have not pruned it in years. We didnt know if the same rule applies regarding summer pruning & nothing growing back vs Winter pruning & getting growth next season, when theres potentially dead branches, as is in our case. Also, is there any product we should use on the cuts ??? Thanks so much for your time, i love all of your videos on UA-cam !!

Hi Michael...Glad to hear the videos are helpful. Without seeing your tree directly, it's difficult to answer some of your questions. First to know is that peach trees have a unique structure and need to be pruned differently than other fruit trees. Orin explains it in this video:

If you got dead or dying branches, they should be thinned (cut back to their source). Also, if you have branches that are non-productive, here's another video that may help:

Does say making cuts near the collar (thinning), there will be no new growth, So whether we cut in late spring or in winter months, the growth will not happen, if im reading it right. I sent an email also, with pictures. im now wondering if i should make a renewal cut instead of thinning, on the major lower branches, they both have minor splitting & some minor bark loss on top of the branches. thanks
