How To Make Korean BBQ At Home

- What’s better than grilling, drinking, and hanging with friends? David Shim from Cote Korean Steakhouse in NYC makes Korean BBQ, a meal designed for fun and sharing.
David demonstrates a few techniques for trimming beef short ribs, the most common protein served at Korean BBQ, as well as some preparations of banchan (small side dishes) like pickled daikon, kimchi radish, and much more. Finally, David and Cote co-owner Simon Kim show off proper KBBQ drinking customs.

This guy is a true pro and so eloquent in describing the process
This was such a fun video 🤗 I’m sold. Will definitely check out the restaurant
How to make Korean BBQ at home: have an $800 knife
I didn't know that Masamoto Tsukiji could went over those price
Lmao
His equipment might be lavish but it's his skill that shines. This guy with a 8$ knife can probably still do a much cleaner job than a novice with a 800$ knife.
How to make Korean BBQ ar home. Move to Korea
Buy a $40 whetstone and learn how to properly sharpen and hone your knife.
No better guy to be getting advice on Korean bbq. I believe he is the sous or head chef of cote in NY.
In Korean culture, you can't drink without eating something at the same time. It is really unusual to just drink alcohol by itself which is why all food ate with alcohol is called anju. In this video, they are drinking a mixture of beer and soju called so-maek as a poktan.
Very true...
the knife skill is top notch
Love the chef by the way. He knows his stuff
Thank you for sharing
Korean BBQ step 1: find an amazing restaurant
We have resturstants in sf bay area that you bbq indoors! Just order your meat and grill.
never saw someone holding chopsticks like the 2nd guy who came in in the end to eat 06:40
I need to try Korean bbq looks super fun
the easiest way to make it cheap is to just use pork or chuck steaks and slice them sort of thin. then buy bottled Galbi seasoning and mix it all in a ziploc(i tend to add more sesame oil). then after a day to even a week(i've waited longer and it was fine) in the fridge, grill it. I do this often. Short ribs which are the meat you're supposed to use are extremely expensive and they're easy to gobble up fast. For me at least the difference in taste isn't worth the money but i don't have an expensive palette either. I mean i don't even like filet mignon, i like a little chew. and it's really about the flavor to me where the grilling with the kalbi marinade makes it about 80% as good as a restaurant. It's so easy to do it this way and cheap.
Another easy/inexpensive version I used to do back in college is to use any thin cut beef (bulgogi, philly steak) and the bottled Galbi seasoning for bulgogi
So... he was totally right when he said to not breathe when pickling the jalapeños, ooof did it aerosolize, my dog sneeze right away and my eyes were burning in my kitchen
Nicole what kind of vinegar did you use?
@@MoesDough rice wine vinegar
Tried this recipe to the T. Using a cast iron skillet on a home stove top just doesn’t work. You won’t get the right texture and tenderness they are advertising. On a pan too many juices accumulate to get that grilled taste and done-ness. The first batch was too chewy. Then I put the next batch in the broiler oven set to high on a wire rack on a cookie lined with foil sheet and it came out fantastic. Try that for those that don’t have a outdoor grill.
That was so awesome!👏👏👏👏👏
What's the song thats in the background for the first few minutes? I remember it being from another song, just cant place it

I was wondering what the leaves you were using as wrappes were, they remind me of amaranto but I wasn't sure.
perilla leaves (깻잎)
That kalbi ain't the only thing that's flamin'
I miss Korean food
HI my name is Aaron Durr ASD it's so good
Look so delicious 😋😍😋
Chef Shim is FOINE!
Don't need to buy a BBQ sauce from a jar that sells in the supermarket.
Anyone noticed his glowing face? 😆
What are the drinks in the grand slam?
I'm so jealous
you can tell this guys knife skills are absolutely top notch
Funny, I was thinking the opposite.
How to make Korean BBQ at home:
Step 1: Become a butcher.
Or find a butcher who does all that for you?
Dont forget the most important step, don't have a barbeque. Use a frying pan.
They forgot the most important step for a BBQ, using a grill or one of those special ovens.
Visit an asian grocery store. Duh. 🙄
no
@@archenforever7264 yeah they're pretty rare in South Devon funnily enough
I wish I were the type, to be able to pull off a white shirt while cooking. 😂😂
they should rename the video: “why you go out for korean bbq”
lmfaoooo
something about watching someone with crazy good knife skills is really fun
bro I love that he's so happy and smiles so much
Bro I love how you pointed that out
Bro the internet makes it seem like smiling is a rarity
are you gay? its okay you know that
hi 🙋♂️ it’s my friend

One of the most important key ingredient is the 'Korean pear" very different from western pear.
It is crunchy, juicy and sweet.
When you make Korean soy sause BBQ or bulgogi use this pear
This makes good beef sauce great.
Believe me. Every single great korean bbq restaurant, chefs, home cook nerds like me use it.
You can use fuji apple instead if you cannot find this pear near you but once you use it you will fall in love with your sauce.
It is the best pear in the world. Hmart sells 7 giant ones for 2 a piece. So worth it.
Is the "Korean pear" the same as what chinese people call "Sali?" where it tastes almost like an apple pear hybrid?
lewchootrain sali is thai, not chinese and no these are two completely different pears
@@QuickQuips Is Hmart a food bank??? Kidding. Giant one is about 3-4 dollars here in Korea.
@@lewchootrain I have no idea what people call 'sali'. but you can google Korean pear. Korean pear is round to western pear's longitudinal shape.
I love how the munchies staff was so excited about the grand slam
This guy absolutely knows what he is doing.
They said grand slam but Farideh heard "Sicily"
Damn, I thought Tribe by Bas was gonna play... I was all like "This ones for you" when it started playing lol
Hahaha same. I was waiting for the lyrics to comethru
I could eat Korean BBQ every day
Same bruhhh
Me too!
Let’s do it!! We should just live the dream and then compare the sizes of our stomachs at the end of each month.
@@deadfr0g lol sounds good
Me too
Everybody make sure when you buy this meat that it's well marbled. Always better meat.
KIX_LOVE with great wuality meat, the fat will be throughout the meat, not like meats you buy from Walmart where the fat is in certain areas. If it’s well marbled. It’s always better meat.
Short ribs always pretty marbled so
@Amazed Waffle you can't get korean meat outside of Korea
Don't really have enough to export
@Amazed Waffle thats not hanwoo?
I dont even have the skills to cut like he does....
You should probably start practicing, my dude 🤙🏻
He once didn’t either....
When he said "my partner" it meant that's his husband
The intro song sounds a lot like
Bas - Tribe ft. J. Cole
heard it too! or the original sampled song Zum Zum by Edu Lobo
This ones for you
I WAS JUST ABOUT TO SAY THAT
Well... this was well worth the time. Korean food is singularly delicious but it was such a mystery to me as to how those flavours and textures were created. Thank you!
I am starting to fall in love with korean food 😍
Its the best!

@Onion Dark Knight Korean BBQ > Japanese BBQ
@Onion Dark Knight nah, Japanese food is missing the spice
@Onion Dark Knight Japanese Food and Korean Food cant really be compared. Even though Japan and Korea is right next to each other the flavors are almost at the opposite spectrum.
Japanese cuisine emphasizes on natural and umami type flavors, and usually enjoyed with soy sauce, salt, or miso to fit tastes. Japanese food is usually very mild but deep and let the ingredients speak for themselves.
While
Korean cuisine emphasizes on kick you in the face type flavors, and usually enjoyed spicy, pickled/fermented, and just a wide variety of different tastes and dishes. Korean food is usually not shy about all the different flavors deep, spicy, hot, sweet, salty, sour, all of it is present in one meal setting.
The wide variety and differences in Asian cuisine is very special. Look at Europe, the most famous European cuisine is Italian and French, and of course they have differences, but yet also a lot of similarities....
While in Asia...
Japanese, Korean, Thai, Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese, all of which cuisines are easily level of any european countries.
The chef and his friend make this so cool! Lol down to earth and beginner friendly.. cheers!
its his boyfried
I love the 반찬 from Korean bbq 🥺❤️ its my favorite part. If I spelled it wrong, I’m still learning!
You spelled it right. Good job! 잘했어요~
right! 반찬! seems like side dishs..
Korean BBQ next up at my house. I’m happy someone’s feeding Farideh - she deserves it! 🥰
None of us can cut like that -_-
Tried but failed 😔
I'm waiting for the Korean BBQ restos to open in my city. I miss this so much
😔
Been making Korean short ribs at home for about 2 years now.
Pls tell me u have cold beer with em all the time too
Had to make sure actual Koreans were in the video. Good job!
I'm marinating mine to grill tomorrow. I've made these before, but always just the basic flanken cut. Awesome ideas. I like the different banchan too!
Wow! Thank you so much for sharing. My family will enjoy this so much. And the "grand slam" that's so cool!
I love that they put so much focus on the sensory and communal experience of this. Out of all the cultures I have had the pleasure of dining with, I find that Koreans have the most emphasis on sharing joy through the dining experience with their guests. Truly inspiring!
Korean food is delicious and there are no better drinking games anywhere in the world than in Korea.
Cute couple curious Is he using wagyu meat ?
I love this vegetable. One of my favorite kimchi’s
Asian cuisine is so beautiful and artistic and elegant, while at the same time being flavor packed and able to be enjoyed in such jovial open settings. Not to mention asians can DRINK. Kbbq with the right people is an experience everyone needs to try
Korean culture is awesome. Glad it's finally getting some recognition 🌶️🔥😎
thank you!
Awesome stuff guys especially in the quarantine time I will try and share it. Stay safe and always 6ft
His knife work is amazing
not really, he is pretty wasteful with the beef tbh
jaczekdertuerke - I’d be mad if my butcher left so much fat on meat I’m paying for by weight
this video is too late, I celebrated Eid Al-Adha yesterday, got some meat, and already cooked them all :( now I want to make my own kbbq :(
The most impressive part was that high five!
LOL. Typical Asian hospitality. Always got to be drinking and ensuring everyone has a glass. Good times for sure. 😂
This is making me Hangry 😊. Chef has impressive knife skills.
Thank you Soooo much Chef David and sir Simon for sharing your recipe here from Cote NYC, I’ve made this dish today and my family felt like we were dining in a Michelin star restaurant... it made us wonder how great the foods are in Cote NYC.. will definitely check the place once traveling is allowed in this side of the globe 🌎 😊
Korean BBQ ❤
It doesn't cover the most critical part of Korean BBQ, the samjang. Your meat can skip marination, but if you have good Samjang, it will still taste good
Absolutely love it when you can share food with a bunch of family members or friends like this. Food to me is something that is an experience and I enjoy sharing it with people
Fuck do we really have to see the ideology at every single thing we see? Could we have just skipped the "partner" part where he shows how much he loves HIS husband? Seriously??? Like which cooking instruction video ends up with the chef bringing on camera his wife? *Goes to live in a cabin in the woods with no internet
I remember taking my non-Asian friends to a kbbq and they’re like “wait... we have to cook our own food!? Ew raw meat, I lost my appetite” DUDE, HOW DO YOU GRILL AMERCIAN BBQ FOOD!? 😂😂😂
Totally happened
Lol yea people be lazy. Like when the food is cooking just have conversations, plus don't need to tip if you're making your own food lol
Short ribs can simply change the world.
This is true Korean bbq ....not everyone understands that it's not only about the food, which is amazing regardless - but having everyone sit around and eat together maybe over some drinks too...
What'd you put the meat in. A piece of lettuce? I apologize if I sound dense. Your food looks amazing
Most videos on this channel the chef just takes a bite at the end and the video cuts off. Obviously the entire crew gets to eat almost every video, but the, never show it. Here they really made sure people understood how important the experience is of everyone eating together at a korean bbq.
Using daikon? What a disgrace to my Korean ancestors. You might as well just cook yakiniku and serve sake.
Sicily!
LA갈비
After watching this video. Don't buy any BBQ marinate sauce from a jar that sells in the market.
It’s always nice to see gay Asians making videos on YT. Those vest and scarf are kickin’. LOL!
Koreans have definitely unlocked the code for great food
We, Korea have 3big Bs....
BBQ, BTS, Black Pink!!😄
one of my favorite appetizers is the sweet fishcake, tastes so good
oh! you know that...it is called 'Jun'
so delicious!!
I really like your meat cutting skills!so professional
Korean BBQ is the best.
If you actually choose to do this and trim your short ribs yourself, don’t toss that fat out. You can render it into something akin to suet and use it for a host of culinary applications.
I'm drooling 🤤🤤🤤 love kbbq so much
The cutting part looks like a delicate procedure. Like the most difficult part
폭탄주 마는거 보통솜씨가 아니신데 ㅋㅋㅋ 회식좀 해보셨나봄 ㅋㅋㅋ
May I have a recipe of his many cups of sugar, soy sauce, and I am missing the last one? 😁
"Own a juicer" - hmm... guess I gotta go back to the store lol
will indian guy like this? Looking the side dishes, i'm not convince if it will taste good to me.
“Just snip, snip and you’re ready to go”. Slogan for every Urologist
Ohh no🤣😭
Loll

Or mohel.

This was so pleasant to watch
Right? It truly was
how much does it cost to have this guy as your personal chef at home everyday for the rest of your life?
anyone know any great video without beef. pork and chicken only?
Recipe ?????
so korean barbeque is actually fried????? Why call it bbq?
