Agree with all your points- some of the most successful companies create have a fail safe environment. The question is -- how do you balance having a fail safe environment with the reality that we're paid to deliver?
That’s a good question! In my experience balance is a delicate dance. There are times when all is working well and the team is delivering. Then there are times when they aren’t. When they aren’t I observe what’s going on. Perhaps additional clarification is needed on goals to achieve. Or there could be individuals taking advantage of the opportunities afforded. Once I pinpoint the problem I address it. For an example, I had an employ who was very outspoken and his reasoning was that he was taught to fight for things to show he cares. After some coaching he was better able to gauge when to be “passionate” and when not to. It took time for us to get there. The simplest answer is to know your team and their motivations. Work with them to correct behavior that derails from goals. When they feel heard and feel like they have opportunity they will show up and give their all. When teams are operating in that space they will deliver.
