    Ok as a young boy, my first step dad had worm beds 4'x9' he use peat moss as the base. He would add news paper but would shred it first. He also used chicken feed. However once every 2 weeks he turned the beds. Also you might consider starting another bed. He would use horse manure but only when he wanted his worms to multiply. Also instead of cardboard as a top you might consider plywood.

    I go about my "Farm" slightly differently (Sorry Geoff Lawton). I have a couple of plastic milk crates on the bottom that I have broken up and which are covered with either weed matting of shade cloth to allow for drainage. From there, I have a wire (I think you guys call it hardware cloth) made into a barrier and which goes from one side, not lengthwise, of the bath to the other. Then I follow the steps that you have done EXCEPT that I only fill one end of the bath and leave the other end, usually the drain end when first starting out, empty.
    What I have found, is that once the system has fully broken down into worm castings, I then start to fill the second end of the bath and, the worms will migrate, through the wire, into the new feed bed, even worms don't like living in their own sh*t ;) LOL, leaving behind half a bath of castings which are easier to harvest without scooping up worms at the same time. From there it is just a matter of alternating ends of the bath.... I hope that this helps... From another Aussie to Geoff LOL

    I would avoid pouring the worm tea back in the bin too many times. They get rid of it for a reason. Maybe do it twice then use fresh water.

      I agree. I think i recycled my juice too many times. Started loosing a bunch of worms. I had to pull them out and rebed them.

      Dilute it too before using it , even in the bin. Best use rain water , not tap water or distilled. I noticed you don't pulverize your egg shells , do that and they will help your worms digest in their gizzard and then they get the benefits of it. Egg shells take FOREVER to break down if you don't .

      Thanks man! I'm definitely on the look out for as many free bath tubs as I can get my hands on right now. I'm starting to see and understand the potential of the worm especially in a small space. I even think I'm gonna add some night crawlers to the mix because there's a Lake close that people love to fish at. Go ahead and add another revenue stream.

    With the extra water draining out you do not need extra water. The worms are expelling extra moisture. I watch The Crazy Worm Lady and A V. Yes, they do it differently but the concepts the same. Also worm tea is made by 3lbs castings, 5 lbs water 1/3 cup molasses then you aerate that to multiply the micro organisms in the tea. Put the castings in an old t-shirt or if you kept the bag you got the worms from use that as the “tea bag”. After 24 hrs spray on plants.

    Great videos. You are in NC, what is your zone , 7-8?. Im an in NJ, zone 6a-b. I want to start vermicompost, but Im concerned about attracting bugs/flies if I do it inside my house and Im not sure if they will survive in my garage in the winter. I see that your worm farm is in a concrete building that looks unheated. Your bin looked really clean with your screen cover. I have colder winters but I imagine you still get below 40 degrees in the winter in the building which I thought might kill them. Good luck growing the channel, you seem consistent. I see your videos recommended from watching other farm/perma/homestead content creators.

      I'm in zone 6b-7a. The worms are under my house. I do have a heater down there incase it gets to cold. If you do end up wanting worms check out my first video on this worm farm. Trapper at Mission Worm ships all over the USA.

    A lot of people say that the worms need a lot of ventilation
    Is this true cause your worms are not getting any until you check on them
    And they look great

    • @HonestOpenPermaculture
      @HonestOpenPermaculture  4 роки тому +1

      Um. When I think about worms in the ground there is no one turning the ground to give them a lot of ventilation. I think as long as you don't flood them you'll be alright. 🤷‍♂️
