Note: the original sound of this video is in Stereo but when compressing the file so it could be uploaded to UA-cam a glitch occurred and caused the Audio to only be in one speaker. My apologies but I can't fix this, fwiw. If someone wants to take the Audio and make a Mono version of the clip by all means feel free. In the meantime I hope it can be enjoyed as is ;)
Set: House of the Rising Sun/Nightmare
    Juana/Guitar Lamento
    Red Rocking Chair
    Song for Sara
    Son House/Marilyn/My Prayer/Mood Indigo
Before the show I was informed by Table of the Elements (who put on the show) that I couldn't film. So I asked John just before playing if it would be okay to film and he cordially said 'sure' when I indicated it was just for me personally. I presume he'd be okay with making this video available for anyone interested so I thought I'd share it. As a side note - it took me a while to get the hang of filming shows and as this was an earlier one I didn't have the best steady hand, but the music is what's more important anyway. This show was recorded by Table of the Elements and released as a live album, which I believe is long out of print.

In his autobiography he states that in his final years he could not play an acoustic due to his illness, the fingering was just too painful....THANKS FOR THE MUSIC JOHN WE ALL LOVED YOU

I saw Fahey perform on May 23, 1998 at the Unity Temple in Oak Park, Illinois. It was a once-in-a-lifetime event for me and my then 14 year old daughter. It was an electric set, and the audience was mesmerized for the entire performance. I bought my first Fahey album my freshman year at Northwestern (Laurie's records in Evanston), and I have loved his music ever since. I can listen to "On theSunny Side of the Ocean" or "Sligo River Blues" over and over again and never tire of them.

I had speak because im reading silly comments like sounds like me when im drunk etc...listen you pick up an acoustic guitar and play and compose compositions like this man did from way back in the 60's then you may have the right to critique his performance...and also he has always been an artist in the true sense of the word in that he plays what he feels and never plays for the"masses". But stop this stupid talk of he cant play because i have seen this genius make sounds on the acoustic guitar that made my jaw drop and the hairs on the back of my neck stand up...some of his picking tech was unbelievable back in the day....funny how people are so quick to jump on any flaws, usually people that hide behind screens rather than getting up on stage and baring their soul.

It’s all in the wrist, elbow, fingers, feet, and knees. He knows exactly what he is doing! I think if Jimi were here, John and jimi would have had a blast, as old farts always do. Time for a nice whiskey.

I Agree!!!He is definitely arguably the best acoustic guitarist ever to live. And he does play what he feels. Around this time he was dealing with a severe viral disease, alcoholism, depression. In very poor health, He's about 3 or 4 years from death during a sextuple bypass open heart surgery in this video. I believe he had either a gift or curse from God, either way he definitely would be on the Mount Rushmore of guitarist! The guitar was nothing! Until he set out to make it a Solo concert instrument.

I think some of the critics of this performance should really try listening without all their cherished preconceptions of what music and guitar playing should be ! This is mesmerising stuff and genuinely musically satisfying - Fahey may not have been in the best of health but his musical skills and compositional ability are as sharp as ever here. This is beautiful stuff!! Thanks for uploading it.

I think he's showing off his compositional ability here, as it sounds like that's what he's doing, just making stuff up on the spot. That's all I ever do but then I'm just sitting around the house, not playing in front of an audience.

Even though the set says 'House of the Rising Sun' my brain heard 'Death Don't Have No Mercy' and couldn't let that go. Impeccable depth and sense of other-worldly timing, that's John Fahey's story telling for you. There are many things that run through it... just, wow.

fahey is always amazing..the man, the music. a legend....startling (to me) to see him playing electric with a flanger. But I love his music. He was the Master of acoustic guitar. No one else comes even close...not even...yes...Leo. Fahey made his guitar an orchestra.

  • @wcpd9124
    @wcpd9124 5 днів тому

Around 40 mins he's playing the refrain from that old 'who'll rock the cradle when I'm gone' song, which he must have known so well his whole life. and then he strays off down these meandering, lost, sometimes confused, beautiful, sad, half-remembered other melodies. I find that totally beautiful. Like he's referencing a life-time's worth of music...

The first and only time I saw Fahey was in LA at a small venue , can’t remember the name of the place. It was in the late 60s. It was an amazing performance. All he had was his Martin and his “coke”.
It might be better if he lost the echo but I’m not a big fan of electric guitar. I’m sorry he wasn’t able to play the acoustic anymore. He inspired me to play and I learned a couple of his songs.

  • @RickyBlackwell_X

Fahey always gave us a raw sound. And only people who do not understand this will consider his guitar playing here too bad for their gentle ears. Guys, if you think this music is worse than what John did in the early period, then you probably didn't understand the early period too.

SO UNREAL TO HEAR HIM ELECTRIC. ALMOST AS SURREAL AS WHEN HE SANG (EG, "JESUS GONNA MAKE UP MY DYING BED"-IN THE FONOTONE YEARS) AS SOMEONE ONCE SAID ON YT, "ITS LIKE HEARING THE CAT TALK". A LOT OF ALCOHOL WENT THROUGH AND DAMAGED HIS ORGANS. HE WAS ABOUT 58 FOR THIS LIVE PREFORMANCE AND 4 YEARS LATER HAD A SEXTUPLE AND DIED A FEW DAYS SHORT OF HIS 62ND YEAR. EVEN THOUGH HIS LIFE AND HEALTH STARTED SPIRALING DOWN IN THE LATE 80'S, HIS COMPOSITION'S WERE THE GUITAR PLAYER'S BEST FRIEND.

I'm amazed that you decided to take "sure, so long as it's only for you" to mean "and feel free to share it with the earth's other 7 billion inhabitants." Assuming you don't make any money off of this (or if you do, that you compensate whoever John's heirs are), then you're only violating a contractual agreement he presumably had with Table of Elements (whoever they are/were). Legally questionable, though perhaps not morally so. Or maybe just somewhat less morally shaky.

I'm a fan of his earlier work but if I had gone to this show I would've assumed it was a joke. this guitar tone is vomitous. and the songs aren't much better

Really sad playing. Even a ten year old can sound ok on an open G tuning. Check out Doyle Dykes if you want to hear true genius finger picking 😢just random bad notes , I play better than him and I’m not a very good guitarist. He is truly a waste of time.
