Fun fact: in mario kart ds it is also possible to do the waterfall shortcut without a mushroom Go into 150cc (it can only be done on 150cc) go into a right drift flick the d-pad to get the boost then let go of the drift and jump when you get to the ramp (you can go into the grass when drifting in 150cc) you need a character with a high drift stat so your boost can get enough speed
for the earliest shortcut, I. think there is a way to cut the jump even earlier, hopping over the water instead of the grass, although not really faster than doing the shortcut normally. At the start of the race, start driving on the outside of the road and start trying to make an orange mini-turbo and release it at the end of the turn. Then immediately chain that with another cyan mini-turbo into the grass, but hop right before you drive onto the grass, while still holding left. If performed correctly, you should land near the grass patch after the second turn. from the start of the race to completing the shortcut, my fastest time was ~6.78 seconds, which seemed to almost be the exact same time as taking the early shortcut normally. It does look a bit cooler, though...
Please can you do a demonstration (showing us how you move your fingers while you do those hopping and releasing stuff) for us? Cus I've tried to do it and it's a little hard

Does the MK8 version not have the underground tunnel shortcut that the double dash version had? Where with a mushroom and good aim you could mushroom off the track after the big curve in the tunnel across a water gap and land in a second tunnel under the track
I'm practicing the waterfall shortcut without the mushroom, I do the mini turbo, hop, hop again, and do the trick yet I always fall in the water. I somehow don't make it to the other side. Any chance you can help? Can the character's weight affect it?
Shroomless waterfall is (in my experience) impossible on 50cc. I've never gotten it to work on 50, and it's VERY hard on 100. You need a super fast kart, and I've only ever gotten it while playing local, it might not work in online with input delay
@@SamSpeedCubes it can be better than the bullet bill on tracks with offroad shortcuts (dry dry desert, rock rock mountain), and it's also great on tracks with slippery road. on simple tracks, it's good but not great. i'd rather have a star usually since i can chain another item box, and not worry about getting hit.
So I'm never one to say no to more shortcuts, but I'm fine with it gone. I feel like it didn't save much time to be worth the risk usually, and I never took it
note: the shroomless waterfall shortcut is extremely hard (i never go for it online)
