That IndyCar Chicago race is basically exactly where the NASCAR race is now, wow

I'd love to see an Indycar race outside of North America

I remember in 1999 there were some plans for a race at the streets somewhere in Hawaii (Honolulu?). I think, the track layout is easy to Google, I'm just lazy to do it now. I don't remember the exact reason why it was eventually cancelled, I think it was something wrong about the organizers of the event.
Few years ago the race at the streets of Boston was even added to the calendar, the layout was ready, but it has been canceled a few months before it was due to be held.
Plans for a race in Asia weren't stricted to Korea. In the early 2010s a race at China's Qingdao streets was also included into the calendar, but eventually canceled because as a result of mayor's elections the new city authorities came into power and they seemed to be not keen into motorsport, choosing a festival of beer to be held there instead of a race
Back in 1992 there was a race in Manhattan due to be held at the streets near the now tragically infamous Twin Towers of the World trade center. Marlboro agreed to be a title sponsor for that, but because the new restrictions for the tobacco companies' sponsorship were issued shortly thereafter, thus effectively killing those plans.

The Hawaii race was supposed to be a non-championship event at Kalaeloa Airport near Honolulu and be an All-Star race similar to the Marlboro Challenge from the late 80s and early 90s or NASCAR's clash. The whole event is a story in itself but I left it off this video along with Manhattan as they're probably the two most famous IndyCar races that didn't happen and wanted to focus on some other ones

There weren't any changes to tobacco sponsorship - that wasn't completely banned in America until 2010 I believe; although the MSA and changing public attitudes had meant that it basically disappeared earlier than that (Penske having Marlboro sponsorship was the last major example and that ended in 2009; a few small NASCAR teams retained tobacco sponsorship until the bitter end). The big issue was that the Mayor of NYC stood on a very staunch anti-tobacco ticket and so the optics of the Marlboro Grand Prix happening in the city and Marlboro ads everywhere didn't really work. I think that fundamentally it'd have been incredibly difficult for the race to have happened in any case - the city didn't seem overly interested and NTC isn't a massive motorsports market; the fact that it required shutting the city down for a few days doesn't sound like it worked and then after the delay was announced from 1992 to some date in the future you had the WTC Bombings in 1993 and that eliminated any prospect of a race then; and by 1994 all the impetus had gone.
The fact that that no one has made a NYC area race work: the Meadowlands was a failure; F1 tried to do the Grand Prix in New York thing as well and it didn't work; even the New Jersey thing they planned in the 2010s fell through.

i remember the qingdao plans but, people forget, also a zhuhai race was planned for champ car of 2007. the zhuhai race fell through, because the champ car somehow wanted a different date for the race then the original 20 may date (replace date was in october), which fia reject, so the race was cancelled on 2 april, before the start of the season. weirdly, it was still in the ESPN (i think it was?) champ car intro, between long beach and portland.

The original 1980 USAC calendar featured three new races: A 150-miler at Road Atlanta (July 27th), a 500-miler at Talladega (August 24th), and a 300-miler at Charlotte (September 28th). However, all three were cancelled when USAC entered a joint sanctioning agreement with CART (Championship Racing League, or CRL for short)...except that blew up after just five races and, rather than try to reinstate those new events (as well as the sport's planned returned to Mosport), USAC just ended its Indy car season altogether.

There were proposed USAC IndyCar races on Talladega Superspeedway and Road Atlanta in 1980, after the CART/USAC split.

Good fucking god Indycars at talladega in 1980 would have been nutty, they thought 59 Indycars at Daytona would be dangerous, would have been a fucking bloodbath.

Holding an event in OKC in 2-2013, knowing how the year went for that city....
That was a rough year or OKC and the whole metro

Just started the video so not sure if mentioned, but in the late 2000s a group that ran Scca and skip barber races in grand rapids announced intent to run an indycar/IMSA event in grand Haven,mi but city council ended it really fast

I wanted to focus on some other proposed races over the years that may not be as well known. There's plenty other ones though so I'll perhaps visit it at some time
