- How to dry green wood bowls varys by climate. Mike is participating in the “MGM” Rough Turned Bowl Drying Project. This is a collaborative effort of Larry Randolph (Missouri), Mike Peace (Georgia) and Sam Angelo (Montanta). Each will be monitoring their drying process on similar size bowls turned from the same Bradford Pear tree.

Good video, like the tips on drying. As a 2 year turner (newby) ... man, your cuts are aggressive must have a very sharp tool.

Great video Mike. Beautiful wood and really appreciate the explanation of your technique. This is the first video I've see where someone explained the use of the figure 8 caliper at 17:22 to measure wall thickness - for some reason it just hadn't dawned on me how to read the thickness at the end of the caliper. Thanks for sharing.

Mike, Another good vid....Really good camera work. Our two bowls weighed pretty much the same before (around 22 lbs) and after rough turning (7 lbs). This will be fun to see how all the bowls turn out. Sam

@@WYOMINGWOODTURNER A horizontal shelf takes up no mor room than the vertical rack I made for the club. I prefer a shelf for my use but I think the peg solution works well for the club because of its high visibility. Mike Waldt seems to have a good solution for jaws as you can see in some of his videos. If I had a spare thin drawer, I think that is where I would store them. Now that I think about it, I may look at my new shop made lathe stand for my Laguna for a spare drawer. I have not filled them up yet!
@@MikePeaceWoodturning I got my chuck storage racks all completed. I will send pics. I used the peg storage option. I am happy with it. I made 4 in total and they are set near different lathes in the shop. I also made one for faceplates.....Time to weigh my bowl. Sam
I watched Sam turn his bowl and the two bowls are a little different but they weighed the same. Drying technique is totally different. I live in North Louisiana and dry about the same way you do. My shop is NOT climate controlled and I just leave my turnings in my shop.
Mike, I met Larry for the first time about a year ago at a club meeting in Springfield Missouri. At that time, I did not recall that he was the third participant in this project. I did talk with Sam Angelo this past Fall and I asked him how his bowl turned out. Sam's response was that his bowl, in the dry Montana air, had cracked badly and he was not able to finish. Do you have a video of the completion of this bowl?

Thanks for commenting. I used an SC4 with the faceplate ring and switched to a Nova Titan chuck with Powergrip jaws for hollowing.
Mike, Great lessons here, as always! Can you give some tips on how to avoid "skating" when you introduce the tool to hollow the inside of the bowl? I'm using a 1/2 bowl gouge, with a 40/40 grind, and find it difficult to start the cut. I notice that you have more of a flat mind (?60 degrees or higher) for the bottom, but is that the same tool you would use to start the cut? Would appreciate your thoughts on the proper grind for the tool for this operation, and the angle to introduce it to start the cut? Might make a good short video?? Many Thanks!

Do you have experience or knowledge regarding boiling of small wood blanks? Possibly releases internal stresses (like stress relieving of welded steel). I did this once with good results, but no way to really credit the boiling process.

I don't. I have read some papers but cannot remember where. I do not do enough rough blanks to make it worth the expense and effort to make a pot, covering grate, gas heating apparatus etc.

Hey Mike, I always enjoy your work 👍. I have a question about the brown bag. What is the purpose of it? I didn't catch the reason for the bag. Also did you make a video of the finish turning of this bowl? If so is it possible to tell me with video without too much searching? If it's much trouble don't worry about just curious as to how it turned out.
Sorry I did not go into more explanation on the bag. It evens out the moisture during the fast drying stage by containing it. A closed corregated box will work also. I have not finished that bowl as it was a 3 person collab and I was waiting on our lead. Since that did not happen I need to finish it. One day.😀

Absolutely. I do this on every rough turned bowl.

I have heard that there are faster ways of drying the wood. Is this true? I am a beginner with about five weeks under my belt. I ask a lot of questions of some people I watch which you are one of. Thank you for your time.
That is correctYes, you could make a kiln. Some soak in DNA. Why rush it? Cut up some spindle blanks and set aside. Rough turn some bowls and let them dry. Turn some bowls once and let them warrp. Don't be in a hurry to finish pieces. Work on your skills first. My 2 cents.

Mr.Peace, excuse my lack of knowledge as I'm just starting set up of wood turning. I cut a cherry tree 8 months ago, I just now cut into 4 in slabs, about 8 to 10 inch across. Some I cut to 10 in length. I treated each end with titebond and brought them in to pole barn and peeled bark off some and left bark on others. Approx how long to dry completely? And did I mess up by peeling bark off even tho I treated ends?
Keep in mind you need dry wood for some projects like a box. Bowls are typically turned green and then dried out for returning. It will take your blanks several years to dry. General rule is to keep in log form until needed. Removing bark helps reduce bug infestation.

No, Larry never did anything with his overall project. I do have my blank ready to re-turn and will do so when I have time and do the followup video. Thanks for the reminder!

How is the back.
Hard to walk. Have PT scheduled for Monday and Thursday I see my back doctor who gave me cortisone shots three years ago for similar condition. Just a reminder that when you have your health, you have everything. Thanks for asking.
You mention a couple times that you've reduced the thickness down to about 10%. Is that 10% of the original thickness?
10% of finale bowl diameter. A ten inch rough bowl I would leave a 1" wall thickness. Uniformly thick throughout is key and do not have sharp edges that are prone to chracking.
