@@kishascape what? He was trying to help make absolutely sure the gear wasnt down. Who cares? It's a POS Aztec that probably got written off. Insurance companies own the engines and props (and won't lower your premiums for 'saving' them) and shutting them down combined with the gear retracted created that float fest on round out. I'd have kept them running and bent the shit out of them.
Did not appear to be of concern as neither the pilot or tower mentioned that. More important to concentrate on the landing than potentially saving a prop and damaging an engine.
I find it amusing that the Aztec manual actually recommends that when a gear up landing must be performed that the flaps be retracted and engines should be stopped and then the pilot should bump the starter to get the props horizontal. In addition in theory you can land the aztec gear up and not damage the aircraft at all with the exception of the gear doors and the plane will settle back on the tail when stopped. I saw an aztec several years ago where the pilot thought he had an unsafe gear condition and stopped the engines on short final, ended up landing very slightly short, folded the gear rearward and ended up with back injuries all because he "wanted to save the engines and props". I say let the insurance company have the plane!
The calmness of the pilot and air traffic control is always amazing no panic. Staying calm and letting all that training take over and successful landing wow great job pilots
Well done on procedure and execution, Sir. I don't think I have ever seen a pilot shutdown the engines so early on approach. "Tower: This will be a fullstop landing!"
Fantastic coordination between the Pilots and ATC. All procedures were textbook, and were executed in a calm and collected manner. There is a reason why Flight School is so rigorous. Good job.

SMOOTH execution, and MAN did they get out of that airplane in a HURRY. Nice job, all. Hopefully as minimal damage as possible, which I imagine is still a good bit to that fuse bottom. I know they typically recommend AGAINST stopping and feathering props, but I think I still would, and it looks like he did a great job with it. If you can save TWO engines, that mitigates a lot of cost. Still, unless you were PERFECTLY comfortable with it, as this guy obviously was, I think I'd keep 'em spinnin. This pilot was one COOL dude all through this.
Fantastic job by everyone, especially the pilot. However WTF was tower thinking in letting a 757 take off seconds before the light aircraft with an emergency is about to cut power and belly plow it in?? Caution wake turbulence my ass! What did he think the engineless gearless emergency aircraft was going to be able to do in the event the ginormous wake turbulence from a 757 hit it?? Here's an idea, hold the damned 757 a few minutes or offer the Aztec another low pass so you can arrange to stop departures for a few minutes.
I think the thinking was that with the hydraulic leak they could lose access to flaps or elevators, and they would rather them just set it down nearby.
loss of hydraulics would not cause the elevators to lose function in the the Piper as all controls are cabled to the yoke and rudder. Flaps in an older Piper are controlled by a lever on the floor in between the front seats, though I am not sure with this aircraft so they could be hydraulic. Most hydraulic landing gear systems are hydraulic up and gravity down after releasing the locks. If the locks don't release though then its gear up time. Stopping the engines was a good idea as well since that way you don't have to tear down the motors after a prop strike. As for not diverting the Piper to another airport that is stupid, as an aircraft with an emergency has right of way over all other aircraft. The 757 could have been taxing out and waiting already. Noticed how the Piper made multiple flyovers. Technically the airport would still be open. But as soon as the plane belly landed then the runways were closed. After initial response the airport could allow ATC to open unaffected runways back up to traffic. The caution wake turbulence call is require anytime a B757 takes off or lands as it has nasty wake turbulence.
I don't know the details of this incident but they usually say that if you're landing within 3 minutes of the other plane. So it probably wasn't a big deal.
YunikoYokai at least at embry riddle it is only taught in very basic theory. The flight sims are more designed to teach how to land when it comes with ground collision so it is just considered a crash and the sim will need to be restarted
YunikoYokai hopefully they all train for emergency. i wouldnt feel right paying someone to fly me unless theyv died at least 500 times and lived hundreds of lifes. or at leazt successfully landed once
It is not really trained, just theory, also there isn't much more to consider than in a normal landing. More important than in a normal landing are probably center of mass and drag (drag especially on the ground as friction, really don't want to do a flip), that you have to touchdown especially careful should be known. What they have to do and can try in case of such a situation is demonstrated in this video, for example pulling some g to sort of yank the gear out.
They are taught how to shut down and feather the engines on training flights, to land both on a runway and finding a suitable place to ditch it in the event of engine failures, to try and get the gear to drop by gravity. Private pilots will be lucky to ever see a sim, it will all be practical experience or theory. Commercial pilots will see some sim experience but mostly will be training on how to fly IFR. Its not till you get to airline pilots that you'll start to see sim training for emergency's in the high end full motions sims.
Flight Following yes but more uneven meaning it could cause the plane to tip But any way a spark shouldn’t be a issuebecause unless jet fuel becomes a fine mist it won’t burn but it becomes extremely flammable when it’s in a fine mist I say jet fuel because that is what most turbo prop aircraft run on
So, I'm Notta gamer...L'il too old, I guess...found this channel a couple weeks ago...Feed suggested this one, and had to check it out, due to the DAB reference...I KNEW IT!! Ur a freaking Riddle student!! The gentleman that ran the deal(Mr. Herman Duhe) was a major influence in my life at that point. Please keep it up!
When they said that maintenance wanted them to make a low pass i was thinking "what are they gonna do? Jump up there and pull it down?" But their idea of looking at it to see what they could figure out was a much better idea
Not just what they can do but to assess the status. Gear could be partially down (without the crew being aware), which would've been a disaster for a wheels up landing. Better make sure that when you're coming in for good, you've got everything in order. And in any case a group of extra eye sets watching for the plane from outside can never hurt.
Westjet: "Socal Approach, WestJet 1422, with you at 12,000' and 40 DME." Socal Approach: "1422, cross 30 DME at and maintain 8000'." Westjet: "Socal Approach, 1422 is unable that descent rate." Socal Approach: "What's the matter 1422? Don't you have speed brakes?" Westjet: "Yup. But they're for my mistakes. Not yours."
Owned and flew many Aztrucks - most had only one hydraulic pump which was on the R engine. Later models, the F model, had two hydraulic pumps. The hydraulic pack was in the cabin centre pedestal and had a manual hand pump. They never had a CO2 blowdown system. The hydraulics operated the gear and the flaps, with a Emergency reservoir for the hand pump. Once the fluid was out, that was it for both the gear and the flaps.
I swear on everything my brother is the one who flew that plane before you guys, he flew it for Air America aerial survey and the mechanic use to put a two liter bottle in it with hydraulic fluid because how much fluid it leaked. Small world

Do pilots get trained to do belly landings in simulators or do they just get taught the theory? I imagine there is a lot to consider when doing one.
They do baptism by fire for real life training. Ask Sulley, betcha he never performed a real river landing before the accident.
Looks like you had a great vantage point for the landing! ( And sorry for ruining your shot at 2:26 )
Flight Following lol thats actually great xd
Cool meeting place
Flight Following yes but more uneven meaning it could cause the plane to tip But any way a spark shouldn’t be a issuebecause unless jet fuel becomes a fine mist it won’t burn but it becomes extremely flammable when it’s in a fine mist I say jet fuel because that is what most turbo prop aircraft run on
ATC Controller and the Pilot both deserve credit for not only the quality of the landing but for staying calm and having great communication skills.
So, I'm Notta gamer...L'il too old, I guess...found this channel a couple weeks ago...Feed suggested this one, and had to check it out, due to the DAB reference...I KNEW IT!! Ur a freaking Riddle student!! Good show...am enjoying your videos and this vid gives you some street cred, as far as I can see...I grew up in Daytona, and used to go to an after school, college prep situation at Riddle, called "Upward Bound".
You probably saw a video of them doing exactly that ... speeding in a pickup truck, under the low flying plan and shaking the gear down by hand.
3:56 those 757's with their wake turbulence!
Good comms, help from ATC (surprise!) And chopped the engines to save the engines and props, well done.
How would you know you’ve made a gear up landing? It will take full power to taxi to the ramp.
Very comforting to hear the ATC give very pleasing assurance to the Captain
"That was butter" It trully was
Westjet: "Socal Approach, WestJet 1422, with you at 12,000' and 40 DME."
Socal Approach: "1422, cross 30 DME at and maintain 8000'."
Westjet: "Socal Approach, 1422 is unable that descent rate."
Socal Approach: "What's the matter 1422? Don't you have speed brakes?"
Westjet: "Yup. But they're for my mistakes. Not yours."
No one in the audio mentions the CO2 bottle emergency extension system that Aztecs have.
Second time I've watched this landing. Brilliant job guys, and I mean everyone. Pilot, controller, fire and rescue. So clinical. Very impressive
What an awesome pilot, so calm and professional. Well done. A Step ahead of the game is always good.
Well, that's some bread that I'd consider buttered!
I swear on everything my brother is the one who flew that plane before you guys, he flew it for Air America aerial survey and the mechanic use to put a two liter bottle in it with hydraulic fluid because how much fluid it leaked. Small world
"That was money" 5:07 XD
3:14 - 1 each.
Really calm and professional pilot.
That pilot is the coolest pilot I have ever heard... Good for him...
Those guys were s art as hell for jumping out so quickly!
HOLD MY BEER...I GOT THIS.... I believe the passenger might need a change of shorts.... LOL
I just realized at the end that Airforceproud whose the one who has this video lol i thought its just an emergency landing video in other channelz xD
Davin Playz I thought it was Vas aviation or something
Well done. Wonder what the repair bill was for that. Damage looked minimal.
I can find audio of events like this happening all over youtube, but seeing the footage alongside this was fascinating.
What game is this? Microsoft Flight Simulator XI?
mimiguy 2 Nah, Microsoft couldn't pulled this shit off. Has to be some other top people making this.
Whoever made DCS I think.
mimiguy 2 (i know this is a joke) Real Life Plane Simulator?
Microsoft Flight Simulator IRL.

I’m watching and I was like “huh flight sim sounds a little weird” lol
I literally thought this was a sim until I saw his face. The comms were so calm and the landing so good it didn't seem real. Hats off to the pilot!

Is yellow caps AF95?
Hey, Airfartspants95, thanks for the huge red arrow in the thumbnail, IDK how I would have ever spotted the plane in that pic without it! Good job, thanks for all the help, you did a wonderful job!
Weird-lookin' Florida man...
:D
They hightailed it outa that plane like they were in a Michael Bay movie :D
“Hold on one second i forgot my water bottle”
damn, shitted my pants watching this.
Ahmad Abdullah same
That's what the jumpsuits are for.
just imagine what you would be like if you were flying...
IBM I saw what you did there and I appreciated it... good job.
Ahmad Abdullah eww its on my window...
To the great work of going through your GUMP emergency Checklist by the Pilot of the Piper Aztec and being able to keep your eyes and feet and hands on the controls and following ATC instructions to engine fuel off engine shutdown to feathered both props . Fantastic job
That was smoooooth, well done scrubbing that much speed before touch down pilot!
