Mariam Khan I get when people criticise Al Ghazali for certain beliefs but him against science was taken out of context. He never criticised the practise or progression of science and mathematics.
He actually encouraged it and considered it a farz-e-Kefaya(communal obligation) but what he discouraged was to follow the mathematicians and to embody them, since most of them were Greek at the time and the people who were impressed by their skills in these subjects began to follow them in their ideology as well and people began leaving religion.
Maaz Khaled when Imam ghazzali fatwa is considered about the virtue of studying math and medicine....

Ghamidi shab knows ghazali studied the quran. And all other islamic sciences too. It's very obvious. Couldn't be an islamic scholar without studying quran and hadith.

That while he was reciting Surat Al-Baqara (The Cow) at night, and his horse was tied beside him, the horse was suddenly startled and troubled. When he stopped reciting, the horse became quiet, and when he started again, the horse was startled again. Then he stopped reciting and the horse became quiet too. He started reciting again and the horse was startled and troubled once again. Then he stopped reciting and his son, Yahya was beside the horse. He was afraid that the horse might trample on him. When he took the boy away and looked towards the sky, he could not see it. The next morning he informed the Prophet who said, "Recite, O Ibn Hudair! Recite, O Ibn Hudair!" Ibn Hudair replied, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! My son, Yahya was near the horse and I was afraid that it might trample on him, so I looked towards the sky, and went to him. When I looked at the sky, I saw something like a cloud containing what looked like lamps, so I went out in order not to see it." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Do you know what that was?" Ibn Hudair replied, "No." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Those were Angels who came near to you for your voice and if you had kept on reciting till dawn, it would have remained there till morning when people would have seen it as it would not have disappeared.

Ghamdi Sahib, a great scholar.. lot of respect. Normally his answers are very direct, rational and full of wisdom. This is very rare that he would dodge a question, which he did in this instance. Question was about Ghazali's claim of seeing angels etc and Ghamdi's views on it. Ghamdi sahib instead started questioning Ghazali on an entirely different front, implying that Ghazali did not look into Quran for guidance, which is baseless and wrong assertion. I myself have questioned Tasawwaf for a long time based on the views of Ghamdi and like minded scholars, until I have had some personal mystical experiences. Ghamdi sahib should speak about Tasawwaf only if he has a personal experience with it. You cannot know it by reading books, in fact it's beyond intellect. In Iqbal's language this experience is called ishq (عشق). Tasawwaf is not a parallel or otherwise a religion at all. Such a claim would be disrespectful to so many great Muslim Sufis who were very pious Muslims & intellectuals, who created great literary work. Tasawwaaf is experiencing the Truth, which is possible by being open minded (La-ilah). Once you have a direct experience then all hate and bigotry evaporates and you come to realize (il-Allah) . The truth contained within Quran and Sunnah becomes undeniably obvious and your heart witnesses this (Muhammadur Rasool- Allah).
He has not denied that somebody can't have a spiritual experience. His argument is that the epistemology of Qur'an is not based on these mystical experiences, since these experiences are personal. Whereas the universality of Qur'an demands that it be based on universal epistemology accessible to the layperson as well as Einstein. The problem with tasawwuf (either Islamic or outside) is that it bases its arguments solely on the basis of these subjective experiences. This is the epistemological difference between tasawwuf (mysticism) and the religion brought by the Prophets and Messengers. In this sense Ghamidi states that tasawwuf is a parallel religion since its way of teaching people is not the same as that of Quran. Please see the Zavia-e Ghamidi series where he talks about the epistemology of Quran and the way it tries to convince human beings about its realities. Mystical experience can enhance a person's faith but as far as Qur'an is concerned it has not used such experiences to present its premises.
No doubt Imam Ghazali did study Qur'an, in that Ghamidi might seem a little simplistic in his criticism. But I think what he really wanted to highlight is that the thinking process of an archetypal Sufi like Imam Ghazali. It is without a shadow of a doubt that this fundamental epistemological difference in understanding the religion has been dominant after Imam Ghazali in this ummah. What Ghamidi wants to do is to challenge that edifice, the sufi interpretation of Islam. In that sense he is in line with the approach of ibn Taymiyya and ibn al-Qayyim, although you can't categorize him as a salafi as well.

Hazrat Ibrahim (pbuh) NE bhi mashahide ki khawahish zahir ki thi imaan haqqul yaqeen ke liye. It's mentioned in Quran. Ghamdi said that "mufasereen" themselves have added the stuff about "out of season fruits with Hazrat Mariyam", from my research, I have found that the mentioning of out of season fruits were in the tafaseer of many tabee (students of shahaba) including "Ikrimah", "Mujahid bin Jabr" both were direct students of Hazrat Ibn Abbas R.A (sahabi). So Ghamdi sb should research before blaming mufassireen.

It was an uncalled for remark by Janab Javed Ghamdi Sb. about Imam Ghazali R A. Imam Ghazali RA achieved such a level in understanding of Deen, which Janab Ghamdi Sb. cannot achieve in his lifetime. Probably he needs to put leash on his rhetoric a little. In my opinion Janab Ghamdi Sb.doesn't qualify to make such comments which was unscholarly. And by the way, for those who are not aware that Imam Ghazali RA was conferred the honorific title of Proof of Islam.

I think ghazali knew about Quran but wasn't satisfied by logical and mathematical speakers, he wanted to know the original, hidden and true explanation of Quran which he found by sitting with the experts of the field.

According to Imam al-Ghazali, with good thoughts one sees angels and good things in dreams, while with bad thoughts one sees devils and bad things in dreams. Thus they present the process of dreaming after sleep as a psychological reflection of the physics of life after death which cannot be explained by the physics of life before death. Sufis focus on the monotheistic commands of the Qur'an. Sufis consider the cultural injunctions of the Qur'an, such as those concerning rulers or slaves, to be the needs of the society of the time. According to the Sufis, God's social system is one that God continues to change through social evolution. God's system does not mean that any individual or group in the world will gain power and bring back the slave system and implement the Quranic orders regarding slaves. According to Ghazali, social action is a momentary action. The moral problems arising from social evolution should also be solved by each person according to his momentary feeling. Ethics cannot be made a universal logical principle like mathematics. For example, whether it is morally permissible to insert a pig's heart or not, the patient should decide for himself on the basis of a momentary feeling. Those who are not patients but continue to argue over each other's interpretive logic through philosophical debates on this issue and spread hatred against each other. Ghazali has described such philosophical debates as evil practices. According to Al-Ghazali, meditation on the universe refers to meditation on the observational causes that lead to the awareness of God's absolute power.

For example Meezan page number 26. He has posed an objection with Imam Islahi, which is such a revered personality to him.

When I looked at the sky, I saw something like a cloud containing what looked like lamps, so I went out in order not to see it." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Do you know what that was?" Ibn Hudair replied, "No." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Those were Angels who came near to you for your voice and if you had kept on reciting till dawn, it would have remained there till morning when people would have seen it as it would not have disappeared.

Why Ghamidi dislikes Ghazali?
Well not a surprise as Ghamidi himself on a number of occasions seen to deny existence of Sufism or spirituality. That is to say, he is not against Ghazali only, he is against Saadi, Rumi, Ghulam Farid, Sultan Bahu, Ajmeri and almost a half of Muslim world inspired by Sufism or sprituality.
So, the reason to belittle Ghazali was that Ghamidi sb does not believe in Sufism. Therefore, Ghamidi is portraying that Al Ghazali neglected Quran during his academic and spiritual journey. Al Ghazali, however went for knowledge of deen which has Quran on top of its resources. So Ghamidi's pun against the scholar Ghazali seem nothing more than a professional jealousy. That seems more plausible because, revered middle ages scholar Al-Ghazali was not impressed by the philosophy as a subject. He wrote a book first to prove his command on philosophy called Maqasid ul Filasafa (purpose of philosophy) then wrote another called Tihafat ul Filasafa ( The demise of philosophy). On the other hand, Ghamidi holds philosophy in highest esteem and sees religion from the lens of a philosopher, which is not seen as scholarly practice after Al-Ghazali refuted superiority of the subject of philosophy. That is why, Ghamidi has opposite choices to those that Al- Ghazali made.
Just because Ghamidi does not like Sufism, does not make Ghamidi any superior; only different.
There is another issue with Ghamidi sb too. He has no backing of Ulema on his side, and enjoys no scholarly appreciation by experts of religion. He rose to fame primarily by trying to portray himself as a reformer with logical appeal and oratory skills, that too not on the basic of knowledge or wisdom or scholarly work; only relying on philosophy. For example modern day research demands literature review done for research, to have strong theoratical basis to lay the research upon. Ghamidi seems to deliberately ignore theory or historical or cultural perspectives, and asserts without any theoretical backing or chain of reasoning or cogent arguments in-line with predecessors or experts of the field. This might be among the biggest setbacks he had recieved, less popularity in religious academic research community. Hence Ghamidi sb has credibility issues not only with not following mainstream scholars, but also his philosophical interpretations are not in-line with Islamic academia. Despite being logically appealing, apparently calm and composed oration; the lack of scholarly appreciation, and by-passing major tenets and principles of Islamic research like Hadith, Islamic Jurisprudence called fiqh makes his authenticity, reliability and validity highly doubtful.
Didn't read your entire speech but Ghamidi doesn't defy Sufism. All he has ever said is Sufism is a Parallel religion. (Not an opposing religion because he said he hasnt found anything against it nor is he looking to, and not a consistent religion with Islam because the sources of divine information are different)

This way Gamadhi sahb says i and whom i am following are right. I cant say others are wrong but by default they are. Ghamdi Sahib has never studied Sofi Ism of Gazali who was highest scholar of Alimul Kalam and had silenced all the philosophical questions raised by non Muslim philosophers at that time on Islam . He was therefore compelled due to questions from his own brother to leave all existing functions of preaching Islam and the luxuries he was enjoying. He travelled by foot in order to get the answer to the reality of creation to reach the final truth. Why prophet Ibrahim questioned Allah how he will give rebearth to dead. It was only to strengthen his belief, otherwise it was already written in Sahifa revealed by Allah at that time.
Gazali on his travel once met an illiterate peasant who questioned him that you are high level scholar. Have you seen our Allah. He said No.The peasant asked him then what is difference between you as a scholar and I as an illiterate man . We both have not seen our Allah sofar. Gazali said there appears a great difference between you and me. The knowledge that has been revealed to me by my creator, that has never been revealed to you by Him. This is a clear difference between a person who searched for his creator and who did not search for his creator.
Our Muslim scholars are too much far from the positive approach of western scholars, who never pose their nose in a subject that they have not studied first or they have no knowledge of that particular subject. I am sorry a scholar like Ghamdi Sahib do not follow the positive approach of western scholars who are too forward in established knowledge than that of Muslim scholars.

Because ghazali wanted to know what others understood. He knew what the quran said. Ghazali knew way better than ghamdi. Ghamdi comes no where near ghazali.
He did read the quran. Why ask such a stupid question? Allow me to explain.
In the Quran, there's mentioning of people who delibertes on the message and fail to accept it as the truth. Certainly, the philosophers trained in logic, systemic reasoning of argumentation and who definitely was exposed to wide range of contemporary ideas, presented in convincing manner which conflicts with the Qur'an. It is known he suffered from melancholia, which if you know happens when one exhausts their thinking. He's work is a testament of the brilliance Allah gifted him with.
Then how does someone like that know if it is true or not? One clear way is by experiencing the truth, and Sufism's central foundation is experiencing the truth by gaining knowledge and becoming aware of it. Don't think it's easy. It's strict disciplining of the self. Just like to eat from mouth food needs to reach the mouth, to experience divinity systematically one needs to discipline the self and this a known way to achieve proof of Allah, as to prove oneself honey is sweet truly, is possible by tasting honey directly.
I'm hoping it is clear now that asking why he didn't go to the quran is stupid, He definitely read the quran, and it's clear from his writing. Why ask what you know if you read him? And, if you analyze his writing, he makes a constant effort to deduct repetition and obvious things. He definitely was gifted with a profound knowledge of the phenomenology of the human mind and an astounding memory. May Allah bless him.

It is probable that he had intercourse before the evening prayer, after which he would perform absolution and pray, all for the purpose of emptying the heart to enable it to concentrate on the worship of God and to remove from it the implements of the devil. IT HAS BEEN RELATED THAT HE [son of 'Umar] HAD COITUS WITH THREE OF HIS CONCUBINES DURING THE MONTH OF RAMADAN BEFORE THE LAST EVENING PRAYER.”

Mr Ghamidi is more or less the same as the rest of the misguided scholars on the translation of the following Ayah of the Quran 3;37 readers can see the exact difference in translation between the Quran as رِزْقًا meaning (spiritual Sustenance) food and كُلَّمَا meaning all the time or every time So every time Hazrat Zechariah PBUH went into the pryer chamber he found Mary PBUH with food.
**Quran 3;37, the word "رِزْقًا" means "spiritual provisions" or "food for the soul", while "كُلَّمَا" means "every time" or "all the time". Therefore, every time Hazrat Zechariah (PBUH) entered the Turbaniacle (prayer chamber), he found Mary (PBUH) with divine knowledge and spiritual nourishment.
The Quran 3;بَّلَهَا رَبُّهَا بِقَبُولٍ حَسَنٍ وَأَنْبَتَهَا نَبَاتًا حَسَنًا وَكَفَّلَهَا زَكَرِيَّا ۖ كُلَّمَا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا زَكَرِيَّا الْمِحْرَابَ وَجَدَ عِنْدَهَا رِزْقًا ۖ قَالَ يَا مَرْيَمُ أَنَّىٰ لَكِ هَٰذَا ۖ قَالَتْ هُوَ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَرْزُقُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ37 Her Lord accepted her with a gracious reception, and brought her a beautiful upbringing, and entrusted her to the care of Zechariah. Whenever Zechariah entered upon her in the sanctuary, he found her with provision. He said, “O Mary, where did you get this from?” She said, “It is from God; God provides to whom He wills without reckoning.”
Sahih International: So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, "O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?" She said, "It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account."
Pickthall: And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth; and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence cometh unto thee this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah. Allah giveth without stint to whom He will.
Yusuf Ali: Right graciously did her Lord accept her: He made her grow in purity and beauty: To the care of Zakariya was she assigned. Every time that he entered (Her) chamber to see her, He found her supplied with sustenance. He said: "O Mary! Whence (comes) this to you?" She said: "From Allah: for Allah Provides sustenance to whom He pleases without measure."
Shakir: So her Lord accepted her with a good acceptance and made her grow up a good growing, and gave her into the charge of Zakariya; whenever Zakariya entered the sanctuary to (see) her, he found with her food. He said: O Marium! whence comes this to you? She said: It is from Allah. Surely Allah gives to whom He pleases without measure.
Muhammad Sarwar: Her Lord graciously accepted the offer and made Mary grow up, pure, and beautiful. Zachariah took custody of her. Whenever he went to visit her in her place of worship, he would find with her some food. He would ask her, "Where did this food come from?" She would reply, "God has sent it." God gives sustenance to whomever He wants without keeping an account.
Mohsin Khan: So her Lord (Allah) accepted her with goodly acceptance. He made her grow in a good manner and put her under the care of Zakariya (Zachariya). Every time he entered Al-Mihrab to (visit) her, he found her supplied with sustenance. He said: "O Maryam (Mary)! From where have you got this?" She said, "This is from Allah." Verily, Allah provides sustenance to whom He wills, without limit."
Arberry: Her Lord received the child with gracious favor, and by His goodness she grew up comely, Zachariah taking charge of her. Whenever Zachariah went into her in the Sanctuary, he found her provisioned. 'Mary,' he said, 'how comes this to thee?' 'From God,' she said. Truly God-provisions

It should be noted hum aitrazaat roz krte hain. Such as yeh kaam aise nhi hona chahiye thay balke aise hona chahiye tha, etc. Ya phir "aapne yeh kaam kyun nhi kiya issay apko such miljata" These are an example of aitraazat. Wohi nauiyat yahan bhi thi .
