I agree she’s choosing the vowels, it’s not because it’s not her primary language. To really understand Floor’s technique’s watch her Beste Zangers performances. She sings in German, Dutch (native), Spanish and English. Now the vowels you discuss change in different languages. She also speaks Swedish and a little Finnish.
I’m sure you’ve also heard that she growls in some songs. There are early videos of her singing straight up opera and a string quartet. She just did a song to help raise money for children in war zones in both Dutch and English while keeping the emotions in both. It’s called “A Song For A War Child”
It's uncommon to find a vocal coach who really takes the time to explain what Floor is choosing to do when she is singing. It would be great if you could go back into Floor's past performance to see how she may have evolved in regards to her technique. An excellent option could be her first band, After Forever. There is a song called Dreamflight live from Powerprog 2007 where she sings in many different styles. It would be really interesting to have you visit that performance sometime. Either way, I appreciate you taking the time to explain some of the choices she makes in this amazing Nightwish song and I hope you continue to explore more music from Floor and of course Nightwish.
Excellent explanation of Floor's techniques used in Poet and the Pendulum. Floor is actually developing her own voice techniques including breath techniques and especially the difficulty in changing tones like she does in the acoustic version of "How is the Heart" from Planet Rock Radio. She oftens talks about the necessity of getting the muscles to remember = practice practice and practice.
Tuomas says about her performance on the new album, that Floor makes this look so easy - but actually it is nearly impossible what Floor is doing. And she loved the challenge

The Nightwish army has Thousands of people, with people like you who explain and educate the ear, and people like Floor to inspire them ... we could be talking about many future singers with a lot of potential, who use this love they have for Floor. as an inspiration to follow in his footsteps ... a way forward.
Very interesting analysis, though I already knew that she is very technical singer. That's why she is so versatile and looks often so ease when singing hard notes. She is so well trained and experienced performer. And the best thing is that she uses her capabilities mainly to conveying emotions that the song contains and not to showing off her talents. Thank you!
You are correct. Floor was also a vocal coach so she knows exactly what she is doing. There is many clips of her referring to her training and her coach. Check out some of her performances from Beste Zangers or her acoustic version of hows the heart please.

Since you have already done the Phantom, I'd suggest you go back and listen to the last segment where she climbs to that last note. She is using explosive onsets on the last few notes. Another vocal coach suggested that this is a small problem she's having.
However, a fan who has seen her perform the Phantom on her solo tour with Henk just before COVID shut things down, commented that she does the same thing in every performance of the song. She is using these explosive onsets to inject a little "crazy" into her Christine character. She starts the "crazy" part of the performance with an exaggerated pronunciation of "the Phantom of the Opera", drawing out "Opera" like a slightly off balance diva. She has modified the character of "Christine" away from the sweet and innocent into one that is manipulative and slightly menacing toward the end.
It's interesting how she is deliberately using a slight technical flaw to inject some personality into the character she is portraying.
Next up is The Greatest Show on Earth make sure you do the Tampere version all the way to the end love your reactions sir well done.
Wow, this was just awesome - great job! I don’t think I have seen such an in-depth and illuminating discussion of the choices great vocalists make that help them sound so damn good. Keeping up the theme, and to agree with some of the other commenters, would be amazing to see you react to her live acoustic performance of “How’s the Heart” from a recent Planet Rock session. She again uses multiple vocal techniques, singing styles, and some sheer mind-blowing power belting. Following that up with another analysis video would just be fantastic. Thank you for this!!
Floor would appriciate that you go in to the vocaltechniecs. She had seen a couple of vocal teachers reacting to her vocals but she feels that they all miss the point of what she can do with her voice. She would love that someone could go into that much deeper then that. A real reaction of a vocalcoach/teacher that knows what they are talking about.

Well I don't think that she's that upset about them missing the point of "what she can do with her voice", but more because they say they are vocal coaches and yet they don't explain anything to their viewers. So someone wanting to know what actually happened doesn't get the information even though they are watching the vocal coache's reaction.

for the others it always was "she uses head belt mix by choice to fit the emotions of the lyrics", which feels a bit clunky to someone who isnt into singing at all.
with your analyses it feels more like "she has to do it like that. she moves on a thin path n has to follow it. in order to not only hit that beauty but also not mess up entirly."

Completely agree to you. Floor mentioned in an interview that she is pretty geeky about singing techniques herself. In one if her last Corona live streams she said when asked that she could imagine doing kind of a vocal masterclass explaining her techniques in more detail in the future.
You are totally correct John. Floor speaks English very well. She definitely chooses her vowel techniques just as you state in this video. Floor is a true master of vocal technique. Several years ago she developed and taught a master class in The Netherlands. I think she also does an incredible job using her mix voice even in her power singing. This helps her to be able to withstand the rigors of performing night after night on tour without fatiguing her voice or blowing it out. Some nights she will pull back a little on her extreme belting and sing with more mix voice. It can be extremely difficult to sing night after night in front of a metal band with all of the bombastic stage effects and blasting amplification. All it takes is for the monitors to be mixed poorly and then the vocalist starts to push too hard, due to not being able to clearly hear themselves over the music. I agree with many of the other commenters below, you are giving deep level insight into just exactly how Floor uses these vocal techniques in her performances. So refreshing to hear about the details and not just general comments. I think even Floor would approve of your analysis style and deep explanations. She has watched many vocal coaches react to her performances and is usually not very impressed with the level of knowledge they have to share. You on the other hand seem to know what you are talking about my friend. Loved it all and I look forward to more details on future reactions. All the best with your book. Be well. Peace.
I agree with you John. Floor speaks fluent English, very very little accent , even though Dutch is her native languish. So her adjustment to the words is not due to language difficulties.

Hallo friend, in my opion,this is the same when you english speaker. For Exempel you are Liverpolean or Texian. Both speak english,..but totally different. I am northern german,but for me the south german has a hard accent. 🤗 stay safe

She masterfully applies classical singing technique into the territories of rock, metal and even pop. All this that you said I've also learned it from my voice teacher. I take lessons with a tenor for a few years now, I'm an amateur and I simply do it because I love to sing and we do classical repertoire (I'm an alto) and this is exactly how we break the text of a score. The higher we go, the more open and "yawny" we pronounce the words, that if we'd speak them instead of singing them, it would sound like I'm very sleepy and in a constant yawn lol. And what you mentioned later about connecting the words "me" and "in" it's the good old _legato_ technique. So linking the words in one flow of air not only to convey the emotion as a torrent of feeling, but also to be economical and smart with the air. As far as I know, Floor has a classical training in singing and even gives vocal lessons and masterclasses in the Netherlands when her agenda allows her to.
This is really fantastic. I did experience Floor’s different approach of the songs than Tarja did but I was not aware of the reason for this. I was simply thinking they were just different types of singers but now I do respect Floor even more.
So this clarifies why we experience so instantly a Floorgasm as soon as we hear her sing.
So if she is capable to manage her vocal cords into whatever the song needs, she will surprise us with another different magnificent Floor experience every single time again and again and again. Really great.
She is so masterful at it, she integrates all these highly detailed and carefully thoughtful changes to bring out and express every bit of emotion that Tuomas has so beautifully woven layered into everything he writes like the invisible threads of a tapestry. It's so seamless and subtle most people wouldn't ever notice them, they just know that the song resonates inside them so powerfully.
These are techniques that can be taught, but to this level, I feel it is naturally in them too. The understanding between all of them is phenomenal, it's incredible :) Thankyou for explaining this so very well :)
a professional singer for 18 years at this moment (started at 17, couple of months before turning 35). classically trained, and a coach herself. she clearly puts a lot of thought and practice into her vocal arraignments. her performances continue to evolve throughout any one tour, and, from one tour to another. watch any of the performances from the Decades 2018 performance in Buenos Aires. she was ill to the point of being unable to talk. her technique and stamina are as strong as ever. can see it in "Dead Boy's Poem" in particular.

Thank you very much for going into more depth on Floor's singing. I had posted a comment after your "Phantom of the Opera" review, asking about belting technique, and I'm glad you addressed some of that here.
I'm still going to second some of the other commentators here (e.g. Brian Dutkiewicz, below), and refer the comment I made on "Phantom", that I think Floor's Beste Zangers "Mama" and "Que Se Siente" (especially the latter) are her best examples of belting per se. I remember one other commentator (that I did really appreciate) in her review on Floor's belting, said: "Watch her belly button to see how she manages her breath. There - there -- did you see it? Her belly button moved! See it! See!" --- I thought that was really cute.
Also, remember, that to be fair to Floor, the quality of the RECORDING is important if we are going to be looking at those subtle inflections, such as you discuss here with "...days...". The Beste Zangers studio was better equipped to pick up those small nuances.

Your explanation is totally correct and reminds me what James did preforming the song Nothing Else Matters with the San Francisco symphonic by choosing ending some words with an open "A" we can clearly hear him singing MatteAAAAArs for instance or when he sings "from different _iew" without pronouncing the letter "V" for View. It's obviously a choice rather than being a native English speaker or not. Hope this is a good example to compare with. Remarquable job thank you!

Though I understand the theory behind the frequencies of notes and how they space out I have never made the connection to why higher notes are harder to hit. Your "ball analogy" made it click. I became curious of intentional vowel changes from their performance of 'Everdream' where there is a really obvious change she makes to get more sound out. I didn't even notice the ones that you talked about, I'm glad you pointed them out.

Thank you so much for this. It's so nice to hear these things explained open. And I have seen a couple of other coaches do that, and while they have given good information, I like to hear it from other coaches too. Sometimes the idea opens up just because the other person uses different words to say exactly the same thing and even more so as I'm not a native English speaker (rahter than from Nightwishland 😁).
One thing that I started to think about when I heard you talking about that mixed register is that where should that sound resonation be felt? I heard you saying something that made me think that it should actually resonate in one's throat. My style of learning to sing requires that I find the right kind of feeling in the right place (although I also like to know the anatomy and tech sides too).

yes she is a beast of technic and (smart) artistic choices but this great work is for one final goal: transmit emotions and hit you soul. It's always a pleasure to go with her in the world of Nightwish ;).
I love how, in your Poet reaction, you frown wondering how she is going to tackle "lullaby". And then when Floor chooses to sing "lulla" you smile ....could you expand on this pls .... is it just as simple as the "by" just cannot fit / scan acceptably so this is the compromise to take.
Great insight. If you do every Nightwish song with this level of detail I'll promise to watch every one of them, lol. If you're looking for more Nightwish songs to analyse I'd suggest Shoemaker from the 2020 album, and then of course The Greatest Show on Earth, live at Tampere 2015 version. Though honestly just about any song from their discography works, really.

Floor speaks several languages, she also has a masterclass on her personal UA-cam site.
Floor has a vlog on which she speaks English and does not have an accent. As an English man I can confirm she speaks more RP than 90% of English people.
Floor has had several years of training, including Rock Academy, musical theatre and opera, so yeah, probably not just a lucky coincidence based on her accent. While speaking I'd say she has a pretty generic European accent (compared to her sister's very British accent), in the sense that you can't easily identify her native language simply from listening to her English. Anyhow, correct me if I'm wrong, but it's been my experience that dialects disappear when singing if you had any training at all (unless purposefully kept as a stylistic choice) and I think it's the same with accents when you sing in a language that you know but isn't yours. Such as English, for most Europeans. Nightwish's first singer Tarja, may be the exception to the rule. It would be interesting to see a reaction and analysis of her vowels. She's done a lot of great songs but my suggestion would be Phantom of the Opera, from End of an Era because most people are somewhat familiar with the lyrics already.
I thought it was just me who thought Irene sounded very English. I'm not sure if she's married to an Englishman, or lives here, but she definitely sounds English.
