It is so refreshing to see that you are walking your talk, sharing everything possible, spreading the love of wildlife. This is the real way to inspire protection and conservation. I have just watched another who refused to show their art methods, I understand, yet my heart honestly sank. Thank you for your generously open sharing and inspiration, Jason, I have just ordered my first set of pastels!

I've only been drawing 8-10 mths and watched a lot of tutorial vids but the first 2 and a half min of this vid have helped me more than anything, I was putting too much base pastel down so detail looked faded. Thank you for your help.

Oh wow I'm so glad I found this! Every video was telling me that you can only do this with pan pastel and not regular soft pastel, but you just showed that it's the same thing! Thank you so much for this.

Oh my gosh I sold my ‘Beatles’ toy guitar I’ve had since the 1960’s to buy a set of Unison and/or pan pastels but now I will be saving my money and carrying on with hard pastel sticks for my under layers because for most of each portrait I use Pitt Pencils for all the detail so a big thank you Jason ☺️👍

Great video Mr. Morgan. I don't think anyone else has done this experimentation online as per my knowledge, very useful information. Based on my observations from my own pastel work, I think the same rules hold good even for Sennelier pastel pads, which have a more gritty and sandy surface. When a softer background pastel is used or if a thick underlying soft pastel layer is applied, layering using pastel pencils on top of them becomes challenging.

Thank you Jason for sharing. I've been experimenting with pan pastels. I'm using them with make up brushes with the soft bristles. They blend very well and use less pastel and don't fill the tooth of the pastel mat paper. You can get fine details using small brushes like painting. I got this technic from another you tuber Xrissart.

The use of a fixative between the layers can solve that too ! I do it, recently and it works. All depends about the colors, lights over the dark tones .

I do scenery and night skies, this helps a lot. Stars are tricky if too many base layers. I found out the hard way. I use Nupastels, then Rembrandt, then Sennellier. Buying Spectrafix to fix.

Jason, if you put too much soft pastel down, and if it isnt going to ruin another part of your painting, is it possible to use something like a little lint brush or very soft nail brush to take a bit of the pastel off?

I’m brand new to pastels and have noticed that I can layer the pencils ok but when I try to blend with a stump or foam or q tip it just seems to lift the pigment off or knock it down off the paper altogether… any ideas? I’d wondered if maybe the paper I’m using isn’t good.. it’s just a winsor and newton pastel paper but doesn’t really have any grit or anything to it.

  • @rauchschwalbelp7693

I just use an eraser if I put too much pastell down. It usually works quite well - with Eraser shield it is also easy to only work on a certain area, even if it is tiny.

FYI, to anyone watching this and new to pastels, PLEASE do not EVER blow the dust off of the paper. It is extremely bad for your lungs and quite cancerous to do so. Don’t be lazy with your health...that should come before anything. Lift the paper up vertically and tap it off of the paper into a trash can.
