  • This video makes me sound down about the whole industry, and I'm really not. Never has such great quality video tech been more accessible to so many creatives. I'm really optimistic about the future for filmmaking, it's just the traditional broadcast TV industry that's clearly over.

Obviously a missed opportunity for some Dalek sound bites.

At least ZCAM introduced a new camera, the f6 pro, that seems kind of interesting

I've played with the Sony FR7 and it is incredibly impressive. It can output 12G SDI live and record in 4K at 120 FPS! It still needs a skilled cameraperson to operate to the best of its abilities but with Electronic ND and Reliable Autofocus, we just need to point it at the prettiest thing in the room. I hope you drove to IBC. Schiphol should replace security and passport control with Robots ;-)

Hi Richard, True the FR7 is impressive and very nicely packaged. I wonder how long before the software can incorporate tracking faces as well as focussing on them? I could imagine buying three of them and I have clients who would love using this setup instead of three camera guys... but who would I talk too ???

Good points Paul! Here in Sweden, it is only OB live Sports where I feel camera operators are safe for the time being (which is what I mainly shoot today for that main reason) but even ten to fifteen years ago many manned cameras like behind goal in football were replaced by just a static wide shot mini camera, and this trend has continued in many camera positions and differing sports. It is only close up cameras that have the best chance of lasting the longest! I must admit I have a good laugh when I see one of those remote cameras in our major news show studios (which are totally remote and robot driven) decide to do its own thing and I can only imagine the panic in some centrally located control room that is probably not even in the building! Progress!!! 😂👍🏾🙏🏾

OB Van SPORT eller Kultur, evenmanger när det är "international" eller Melodifestivalen med direktören Robin Hofwander som är djälvigt kreativ med LIVE EDIT app och set + lightning.

Since 2000 at IBC is the fist time I felt that my video engineer is over, it's something completely different and not for me / us anymore.
Have you noticed how small were SONY & Grass Valley booth this year. No more many broadcast cameras with different type of focal and brand lens (Canon / fujinon / Angenieux ...) ! Only 3 or 4 GV cameras with a small set lighted with no professional light ! Unbelevable !
Have you seen how ROSS was huge with not only one broadcast set-up ? Nothing ! Just commercial staff and closed quiet office to speak about engineering all inclusive system ! Not a single material ! They sells with only trust a budget.
Camera are now tiny, everybody is a camera operator, you can have a kind of steadycam tool for a few 100$ less heavier.
IBC is a technology trade show and camera price decreased so much that we ( boomers ) all feel to have lost our qualifications. So many "cinematographer" with so many new medium though IP networks. Broadcast TV get actually a tuff time.
At 54 YO I decide that is time to slow down that job and find a new totally one with more sense and let the new generation get involve my field that have been a passion though 34 years.

This was my first time at Ibc. I asked why so little new gear is anouched. At different brands. They said covid. There enigineers where at home and was hard for them to develop new gear. That is also the reason for so many same products but in a different body. (Fx3 , fx6 a7s , new ptz) they say over 2 years there would be way more new gear coming out. I think i'm one of only guys that likes the "boring" 2/3 camera , RF , SATELITE , AUDIO , encoding and all things that makes broadcast technical. In the netherlands youtube is going way more to broadcast style and traditional broadcast is more going to tv style. Also we have a shortage in broadcast operators (cam, audio , tech) so i think it Will meet in the Middle

I'm sure Covid has had an effect, even if it's just with the supply of new chips. We have a problem in the UK in that it's mainly over 60 year olds that are watching traditional broadcast TV right now. Obviously with recent royal events that figure changes slightly but the overall trend is clear... and the audience is literally dying!

When I first saw the Sony FR7 my initial thought was... There goes the grip as a roll on set.

It's a shame the way everything is going.

The good news is it's not everything... just traditional broadcast TV as a platform. I'm still passionately optimistic about what we can make with this amazing kit.
