- Anthony Bourdain and The Balvenie visit the legendary "boxing tailor," Frank Shattuck, in Upstate New York to learn what it takes to create true "bench-made suits." Episode directed by filmmaker Rob Meyer.
The Balvenie’s longstanding alliance with craft is a result of the distillery’s dedication to the five rare crafts of whisky making, which allow them to achieve their distinctive taste and exceptional quality. The Balvenie still grows its own barley, still malts in its own floor maltings, employs a team of coopers to tend its casks, a coppersmith to maintain its stills, and has in its service the most experienced Malt Master in Scotland.

The moment I saw Frank walking his master across the street, I knew imediatly, that man's a G!
That is pure human respect..
This is love. Great story. All men need mentors.
Love, love, love that last scene of them walking arm in arm.
The master tailor is elated with his pupil, and you can almost feel the reverence Frank feels for him in return.
Beautiful!
Ahuillllpppp
Frank The Boxer: You're pretty normal.
Bordain: First time I've heard that.
God gained one cool dude. You are missed, Tony.
I like to think that we all seen something in you, Tony, that inspired us all to be a little more cool, alot more adventurous, refreshingly humble and kind, grateful, and always on time. A classic and cultured gentleman, telling timeless stories that always evoke a sense of childlike wonder in all of us, echoing a fascination in hope for all of humanity. Your spirit endures.
Could not have said it any better! Awesome tribute
Perfectly stated. Bravo!
As a martial artist of many years who's long strived to humble myself before my master and never stop growing/learning...I must say, this was beautiful to watch...smiled all the way through watching real discipline/humility on display.
Antonio Paulette Perfect post.
Thanks man.
+Antonio Paulette You took the words right out of my mouth. Beautiful, humble, masterful... the proper way to grow in a craft.
Appreciate that *****.
Good stuff
Watching master craftsmen/craftswomen work is a thing of beauty.
+Wladislav Their passion for their craft inspires the heck out of me!
The world needs more of this videos on Internet
What the world really needs is more people looking for videos like this
Check out Equus Leather's or Northmen's channel. You will not be disappointed!
One of the most worthwhile 8 minutes of my internet life! People with passion just give me so much inspiration. This is beautiful.
Who is frank training? These skills MUST be passed on and given life. In the modern world we need to preserve such talent. Well done frank.
exactly
Unfortunately, this will all be pushed out by Artificial Intelligence.
I will love this forever, but the AI takeover ushered in by the tone deaf is unavoidable
This is a fucking amazing series. Rest in Peace Anthony.
This episode made me emotional. The love these people have for the craft is simply amazing; I would even say it makes me recover faith in humanity. Thanks.
Really enjoyed this, more so than anything else from this series of episodes. Just watching this man work and how meticulous he is about everything and watching him take advice from Raphael really brings out his character. Especially loved the ending when he is walking Raphael across the street in NYC. That to me encapsulates the soul of the city. Millions of people and you wouldn't know it from passing by them but those two men are geniuses and truly represent what taking pride in ones work stands for. Excellent video
I can hear echos of my Nona throughout this. I'm in tears. I learned to cook between her arms. This is true beauty.
Now, this is ... Beautiful !!
I get so emotional when i see that there is still people in the world making art.
no more... he died
A 10 year apprenticeship is not uncommon to reach journeyman level, then comes the years to become a master. Few companies will invest that much time in an individual. This leads to the cut rate products we have today.
i am a builder, 35 years and still learning
You can see the respect and admiration he has for his master teacher.
Anthony makes great shows like this and then leaves our world far too early.
I wish this was so much longer! Fantastic, and gives me the warmest feeling. Great stuff! Thank you.
That suit looked SO good on him at the end. True craftsmanship. Great series Anthony!
Wow, something of a rarity these days! Passion and respect for his craft...I'm awestruck!
Man this is great stuff. RIP Anthony. We all miss you greatly.
Frank I loved watching you on this show and I loved what said I believe the same motto “ cause I know it’s done properly “
These craftsmanship skill are mind blowing and must be pasted down to young generation cause if this skill dies with these artist/craftsmen these skills are gone for ever and this is hundreds of hundreds of years gone
Thank you for keeping this alive
Good to see and humbling that Frank can still take advice from the Master. Not seen too often these days. Would have been good to see the finished suit.
This was very cool to watch. Love the humility and respect for the craft and craftsman.
I really like how he always acknowledges all of those old men who have taught and gave him what he know. He sounds confident but not cocky. That guy knows what he's saying and doing.
I admire anybody who wakes up everyday and puts their everything into the craft, shows pride in what they do and is happy.
I loved the respect he had for his master. Great character there 😊
Nothing but true craft and Respect and Honor...🧥💯✊
Thanks for highlighting these amazing individuals. Great show.
I'm embarrassed to admit how much I'm in love with this little series. I eat this up like an idiot.
Absolutely great show. Thank you for making it!
Wonderful--love the shot of the two at the end.
That was so great to watch. I admire the humility, pride, and dedication that guy has.
that's phenomenal! good for him!!! this is just inspirational!!! GOOD. FOR. HIM!!!
Fantastic! It's such a pleasure to see that such craftsmen still exist. Very humbling.
It's always amazing to see a master at work, the quality but also the humility.
This is one of the most passionate, heart-warming and inspiring series I've ever watched. I look forward to many more episodes
This gave me chills and appreciation to the craft more than i expected. Their passion & commitment is astonishing.
Amazing!!!!! Thank you for the privilege to see a little of that wonderful handrcrafting.
Wow! That was an amazing story! Almost brings tears to my eyes! I wish the story continued for another hour!
This is probably my favorite segment from AB. Beautifully done and such a great story.
And man that is a beautiful suit.
This made me tear-up - just amazing dedication, passion, and desire. I strive to find that "thing" that drives me so hard
In the age of fast, cheap and disposable, it's comforting to see this depth of craftsmanship and attention to detail. It's a very sad thing, to consider that this knowledge and these rich skills are simply dying; to be relegated to "the old days."
Anthony,
You did good, bringing this to light.
I love watching people who are great at what they do.
Please, more of this. I'll take as much as you've got.
Why not become great at what you do so we can watch a video of you in the future?
You enjoy this video because this type of greatness is inside you.
Let.
It.
Out.
Anthony, a debt of gratitude is owed to you for taking the time to do these explorations into craft. I am always in need to expand who I am and therefore compelled to see every one of them. Thank you.
I have been watching these back to back and they are fantastic! As a relatively young man I hope that we never loose touch with the these masters of their arts
I hope we never lose touch with our desire to create living art.
Beautiful. Awesome and inspirational short movie
I just found this channel about 45 minutes ago and I don't think I've blinked
There is an intangible wisdom, an understanding that comes from so many years of experience.
Even for a master, finding something new; a nuance, a shape, a pattern. That is joy.
"I make a suit for myself first, second, and third." Loved that. Reminds me of something Stephen King says in On Writing about how if you're only writing what you think an audience wants to read, you are a hack.
One of the best pieces I've ever seen.
I’ve been watching these episodes backwards and this was my favourite episode. Respect the craft. Don’t need a good suit but would love one...
Man, much respect. Real class acts, all around. 👍
Truly amazing! An artist in every sense of the word. I've been a Balvenie follower for four years and the depth and quality of their Scotch is only mirrored by the likes of Frank Shattuck. Well done!!
The master/apprentice relationship was something I never found in my own life. I truly admire these individuals and the work they do.
Respect to all craftmen! incredible skill.
I would end up getting all misty eyed to just be honored to have the attention of someone of that skill level crafting a suit for me.....wow. Great episode.
How is it that I am just now finding these gems?!
I am very excited for this show. Television done right - with a purpose. To expose the best and most passionate makers out there.
***** I agree Epic Diana Epic
At the end where the Old Master and the New Master are walking together was perfection of deep mutual respect.
Thank you Anthony for the legacy you left in your broad wake. And thank you for appreciating the value of us hand-crafters. Many of us have been labeled non-essential in the covid time.
Wonderful, just wonderful!
This is so awesome. Keep these episodes coming. Thanks
Thanks so much for videos like this.
I’ve watch this episode over & over but I only just realised he’s Charlie Sheridan out of boardwalk empire
RIP Anthony, we miss you
My grandfather that came to US after WWII was a cobbler and the same relates in craftsmanship. I balled my eyes out in happiness watching this. I hope this inspires more and has given me a lift to back into leather working. Thank you for doing this series.
This seroes is awesome. Brings out the best people, and you also get an idea what goes into these hand crafted items.
Beautiful craftsmanship, humble Human, hard to living sad
This is a real thing of beauty!
I wish they would've shown the finished suit.
He wears the suit on the first Japan episode on CNN's Part Unknown. He wears it in the beginning of the episode. Looks sharp.
If you mean S2 E7, it's not the same suit. That one has peak lapels and structured shoulders, too, but the fit and fabric are different; also, that episode was filmed in 2012, 3 years before this video was released.
It's not about the finished suit. That would ruin it. The taste was enough IMHO
I guess time was an issue?
I wonder how many times he wore it before he killed himself. :( RIP
Love it! Thank you
Wow this was a great watch.
this is some of the best video's on the net
this is one of those videos that changes what i do this weekend.. thanks guys
Why have I never heard of this series before?? This is great
Simply awesome.
Craftsman ship is where it's at I love all this. Our through away society today will never know about this. thank you.
This is magnificent.
Awesome video- thanks for sharing this story.
Bellissimo - the painstaking olden way is against the modern, efficient way.
This is what is missing from these new generations the pride and respect in your work and the knowing that you still need to learn more from your master. And seeing him walking his teacher back home or where ever that there is missing, to any young person that watches this and reads these comment find same thing you love doing and see if you can learn from sameone that knows more it’s the best feeling in the world believe me I’m in my 40s and haven’t enjoyed learning then I do now
The young kids of today would never Understand this skill and art...I got 2 hand crafted suits, although the style is dated now....its just the best I've seen around
man this series needs to be a full length show!
Wow
Thank you for sharing this.
thank you Anthony... I cried on this one
The young people need to see this. The old teach the young.
Please, keep doing these videos. This series is so good, it gives us motivation. extraordinary people.
sadly... he died
I would love to have a suit made by this master. Bravo sir, simply amazing.
simply terrific
Amazing! Would like to see the finished suit on Mr. Bourdain!
This series is one of the best on UA-cam. I wish the episodes were a little longer with more info. Great job.
It's the guy in Boarwalkd Empire!
What a fantastic episode episode. I luv frank and his whole attitude, plus with the esteem he holds Raphael in.... just seems like an all around class act. And on a side note, there's 32 weirdos out there that really gave this the thumbs down, wowzers.
The real masters do this... this thing of humility so well. The best thing is there's also this pride in the work but a humility
A very beautiful series!
Real nice suit man, thanks
That was beautiful.
