This is fascinating! My partner is a metal detecting newbie and we have been given permission to detect in a an unploughed farm field within an area where there was an ancient castle settllement. Any tips for the best area of a field more likely to yield finds?
Welcome to the hobby. TBH just wander everywhere but maybe do small areas at a time. Go slow and dig the whisper signals as they are the deeper ones. Naturally it depends on what detector you have! Be sensible and follow the Metal Detecting Code of Conduct and you'll have a permission for life and maybe obtain more permissions through word of mouth. Keep us posted as to what you find. You can reach me on Facebook or join the Man v Field metal detecting group on Facebook to share your finds and ask for more tips and IDs etc. Good luck!

Think the big round lead disk could be a palm guard 👍
I’ve come across palm guards before and tbh agree. This one odd though. Seems a bit overkill lol
