If this video taught me anything, it's that I'm so old that life has come full circle. As a teen I could never afford anything above 900p - and now in my late 30s my eyes are already deteriorating so much that I can't see the benefit of anything above 900p...

playing games from 800x600 to 1024x768 was the norm for me. It wasnt until last year that i was able to play on 1080p with everything maxed out. it was just 1080p but after almost a decade of playing games under 720p, 1080p felt like 4k and I was in awe with how detailed all my games should've been. This video reminded me how i always configured my resolution just to reach that sweet 30 fps spot :))

my 2016 budget laptop.. oh my days the memories of needing optifine to turn everything down on minecraft to reach 30 fps, my golden days playing nonstop league of legends with a heavy cpu bottleneck at 1366x768 where in teamfights it could had been well a slideshow to say the least.. to trying to play crysis on it.. the days I learned what is config.exe and what many of them options would do :P. Specs of the beast were, intel celeron n2840 cpu, 4 gb ram upgraded from 2 gb ram a short while later from when I bought it, intel hd graphics with no number xD as a gpu. It even had problems running 2017 roblox at the lowest graphics :) or watch something over 720p video in youtube.. I'm legit suprised even now that people were buying such stuff even back in 2016...

When the 1050 was the go to budget like you state, is when I first got into computers. I'd always been a poverty console kid. Been studying for years, different health issues etc. stopped me from getting into a position to invest in anything other than a hp/dell 2nd hand system. I've just ordered all my parts to do my first build last night, going with the Arc a 750. So we've gone from the 1050 to intel throwing in their own poverty cards before I could finally invest. Even though I love the sharpness of my new 4K monitor, I really can't say the same about my fps, of course, my pc is also much much better, but the struggle for 60 fps at 4K is much greater than at 1080p...

This resolution is so good to squeeze extra performance that even the Xbox series S sometimes comes with performance mode that targets 900p, and It's also very good for laptop iGPUs when plugged in a 1080p monitor, it's not quite 1080p but is way better than playing at 720p especially for indie/lighter titles that tend to have simpler graphics (and don't include fsr, like hades which still has "heavy" 3D rendering to do)

Hell, I'll still game at 720p on my old Core 2 Duo with an R7 250E potato pc. It's scaling that makes lower resolutions look so terrible. Your suggestion of finding a 900p monitor was excellent advice! For those who can't do that, you can go into your driver settings and change the view port. On a 1080p panel you would enter something like 1600x900+160+90 to get 900p centered on your monitor. Yes, it shrinks your display somewhat, but it's clean and crisp. I do this on a 1280x1080 monitor to get 720p with black bars on the top and bottom, and it looks great. We all do what we must. ;0)

I always thought that 900p is a very reasonable resolution with quite a small impact on image quality but a decent bump up in performance.
There was a time when my options were either 1080p with 45-50 fps or 900p with almost locked 60. I usually preferred the latter and most of the times I couldn't tell the difference.
After a GPU upgrade I had a different dilemma as I had a 1920x1080 (16:9) and a 1680x1050 (16x10) monitor. The resolution of the latter is between 900p and 1080p so depending on the game and its performance I had to choose between 3 resolutions and 2 different aspect ratios

However, I've got a Ryzen 7000 CPU with built in RDNA2 GPU which is enough for 900 P, high framerate gaming for old games. G'day Random,
"The difference between 17 & 19 doesn't sound like much but here in the UK it's the difference between getting served in a pub & not" 😂Yeah same down here in Australia
🤔with the price of everthing going up over the last few years I hope 900p still gets you a shout🍻 instead of needing 1080p. While UK viewers shoud get this I am sure this joke will not make cents to Americans.

That was all i got, paired with an msi gtx 670, that thing was a beast. I played battlefield 3 night and day with that setup, and BF4 too. There’s so many dirt cheap new TV’s (32-42” roku types >$150 that are tuned for movies) that are coming out at native 720/768p I was curious how that would look like for retro gaming, or low end graphics cards.
Before upgrading I would try 900p on 1080p but it looks toooo blurry imo. I’m still curious on how it would look like on a native res panel. No good videos on that subject though.

I had a 32 inch 768p TV for a while and the picture was fine, as long as you gave it some distance(as you should when using it as a TV). As long as you can keep the distance when using it as a PC monitor(like a couch PC) it should still be fine. I'd avoid sticking it on a desk at which you sit, though. You would very likely notice a fair bit of pixelation in that kind of setup.

My 3rd PC from spare parts have GTX 1050 2gb version(128bit) with R3 1200AF, what I bought when I already have Radeon 7950 (384bit memory bus)... I was surprised how good it runs Witcher 3 Med-High settings (50-65FPS) compare to 7950 (40-45FPS with AMD-FX 8350 and 1866Memory) and yes both cards run in 900p resolution. When I testing battlefield 1 on medium settings I dropped resolution to 900p from FHD and it give me extra 10-15FPS, now it's CPU bound, but runs pretty well 55 FPS drops and 80 average. Main problem with lowering resolution on non native monitors it's gamma correction and details loss. I have much better hardware, but I always want to see how it will run on something like this, check optimization and squeeze every fps's.

I remember back when i had that old crt, I used to minimize the resolution to 768p. It was horrendous but at the same time, acceptable considering what I had. Today, turning resolution down isn't something people take into consideration. Reducing texture, aa and other types of quality settings are considered rather than lowering the resolution. 900p is an excellent choice considering 1050 and 3 gb vram. A lot of older cards could (and should) be used in this way other than straight away replacing the hardware.
P.S. The potato roast was awesome (and the ex-girlfriend one too)

I haven't seen PC handheld devices that have a 1600 x 1000 screen (16 by 10) because that resolution will strike a nice balance between graphics, performance & battery life. Imagine Steam Deck 2 with a 1000p 16 by 10 screen or Switch Pro with 900p in handheld mode

I think it's a bit of a shame 900p monitors (mostly) aren't around anymore. They are much more of a sweet spot for 18,5-21,5 inch panels than 720p is and the performance gain on older hardware really is pretty significant. And it always looks better to play on native resolution than to reduce it to something that doesn't really match the pixel distrubution of the panel.
I guess the bright side is that monitors nowadays are pretty sturdy and second hand market is pretty rich.
...Just thinking about it now, I haven't had a monitor die on me for the last 20 years or so, while I've seen so many TVs do just that for no apparent reason? What's up with that...
