almost 2 years later and this video is still helping out people. Recently got a samsung 980 nvme and an orico enclosure and was wondering why it wasn't showing up. I very much appreciated how to the point this video was, there wasn't any part that I had to skip to get to the important bits :)

The steps in this video only work IF the right kind of M.2 drive is being used. Sounds obvious, right? But it wasn't to me...
I used this SSK NVME Enclosure to upgrade my LapTop to a Samsung 980 PRO PCle 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. It worked flawlessly - the new Samsung SSD drive was not recognized by Windows either, but it was not necessary to go through the steps of this video prior to using Samsung's migration software (i,e., the migration tool software recognized the new drive even though Windows did not). I ran the migration software with the new Samsung SSD in this external enclosure, replaced the old SSD with the newly cloned Samsung SSD, and the LapTop booted up perfectly with all my old files, apps, etc., unaffected. A perfect, painless size upgrade!
I was expecting to be able to use this SSK Enclosure with my Laptop's old SSD drive as an external drive, but Windows would not recognize it no matter what I did. This video's steps wouldn't work as the drive could not be initialized - I would just get a "The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error" notice. Nothing worked and I've been scratching my head for days now. Then I finally noticed that my LapTop's old M.2 SSD disk is a Sata disk! What a waste of time. I didn't think to check the type of SSD I was replacing when I was searching for an external enclosure. So, I'll have to find a different M.2 SSD enclosure if I want to make use of my old LapTop SSD as an external drive.
Great video. However, what if you're using an SSD that already has files on it? Is there another process?
^This. I have a drive from a previous computer nd I want to put the files on my new computer. I got the M2 adapter and all that. It sees the drive but I have no idea how to get into the files.

Pro Tip - My problem wasn't formatting. The drive was properly formatted. It just doesn't reach out to Windows for a drive letter, so Explorer can't see it. Go into dskmgmt, right-click the drive, then choose something along the lines of "Change drive letter" etc. Then manually assign it a drive letter. I have to do this every time if I use another external drive. But it only takes a few seconds, so it's a minor inconvenience. Obviously, don't assign it the same drive letter as your internal drive or any other drive connected. I'd go way down to the end of the alphabet, just to be safe.

What if the drive is not new and it already has data on it?
I had this exact issue with this exact enclosure. Worked fine for two years, then one day, I could not get it to work no matter what. I opened the enclosure, carefully removed the SSD, and checked that everything looked fine. I carefully reinserted the drive at the required angle, ensuring it made proper contact, and plugged the drive back in. Viola. It somehow had become unseated from making proper contact and that's all it needed.

Let's say that "somebody" upgraded their M.2 to a 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus (new Windows 10 install) and they went out and bought this enclosure to migrate some of their old files (that were still on the old drive) over to the new drive. However, they are now currently unable to view the contents of this drive and are worried that formatting it will erase the data they are trying to save. What would that person have to do?
BTW - That person is me.
Windows is still installed on the old drive that I'm using in the enclosure (it is a different copy of Windows 10).

This is an awesome video except 2 problems.
1) Mine errors when trying to initialize.
2) I am trying to recover the data on this drive since it was in a PC that got hurt... so initiating without getting the data off first doesn't work for me. I've searched everywhere on the net for this... can someone please help?

This does not explain why the bootable full working SSD with important data I took out from laptop and connect via USB doesn't recognize right in the another PC. The another PC:s ( I tried three ones ) want to initialize disk and thus delete all data from it. I just want to make full disk image from the disk and mount back to Laptop

What can i do if I dont see the drive in disk management? Its there when in the m.2 slot but not when its in the adapter. Any help would be appreciated

I pulled a 16GB SSD from a failed desktop. I purchased a Orico M.2 SSD Enclosure. I have connected it to the USB on a new windows 11 Laptop . I here a noise of recognition but no drive seen. Asl connecting it to the Thunderbolt USB-C port does the same thing. I see the drive in disk management but it want to initialize. won't I lose the data. Is it due to the SSD came form a Window 10 Computer and I am on a Windows 11?

HELLO MANDIC! O.K. So I saw your first SSK Video, purchased one from Amazon Installed my M.2 SSD plugged into my Computer, the Blue Light comes on but NO BEEP when I plugged in! Eject Disk doesn't recognize it! Disk Management doesn't recognize it! Got a second M.2 SSD from Amazon, installed same way and still no Drive recognized! Defective SSK M.2 SSD Enclosure SHE-C320?

I have this exact drive case, with a 1TB installed. Been working fine for a few years. However I now get an error message as you descrive here. I can see it on a Mac, but not on a PC. Any ideas to solve ??

Thank you so much! This worked perfect for me! I had a WD_Black SN750 with a heatsink. The drive wouldn't fit in my enclosure so I removed the heatsink (carefully) but the drive wouldn't show up. I thought I damaged the drive, but your video helped me make it usable! Excellent video!
Bummer, it seems like this model enclosure makes the drive show up as a SCSI drive even on Linux, masking the NVMe controller and any namespacea. This completely defeats my purpose of testing an NVMe drive. So you know of any external enclosure that shows up as an NVM subsystem that shows the native nvme controller and namespaces?

I am trying to clone a 2.5 drive which is the OS of my old system to an NVMEe 2280 using an external drive enclosure. The SSD here is is from a brand new laptop. I want to clone the old to the new. But I can insert the cloned drive (which is the OOB drive from new laptop) it is not showing but Disk Manager says it is online but I cannot see it the explorer window but I can in disk manager. What do I do here?!!!
Are you sure it is formatted in a file system windows can read? The drive will show in DiskManager even if it’s formatted badly, just won’t appear in explorer. I’d really recommend a fresh install anyway. Cloning OS drives often leads to a lot of problems with driver issues and registry issues. A fresh install and just copying over any important data off the old drive afterward is the most advisable way to go.
and what do you do if you get an error reading "invalid opperation"?

Good evening. I am not having success with getting the SSD format with using Disk Management. It says formatting, but there is no activity taking place. I left it connected trying to format for over an hour and still nothing happened. I switched off my laptop and connected the ssd to my phone and it formated in exFAT, but when I reconnect it to my laptop and tried file transfer, it shows it's transfering at around 355kb/s. It is a Samsung SSD 980 in the SSK enclosure. It's not formatting in NTFS. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I upgraded to a new faster drive cloned everything now the original I'm trying to use as a temporary external, it doesn't show allocation but shows fatal drive error. Is it a waste of time to format this?

It's really kinda annoying that it pops up when you open drive management, but not when inserted into the computer. It's been a minute since purchasing a new drive and couldn't find the damn place to format the drive.

thank you but my problem is a bit different .my nmve is not ititializing and I want to copy some its folders to another hard drive. the nmve has windows 10 on it but after i installed an update it would no longer boot into windows . So I bought the ssk enclosure to copy files I did not want to lose before I reinstall windows. I also to not have the option anymore to reset the pc so I am really hoping to at least be able to copy some folders and files off the m.2 nmve drive . Any ideas how I can get the drive to initialize.?
Remember the drive I want to copy has a corrupted windows 10 on it.
If your install is so corrupted you cannot see any file system on the drive, you may be out of luck. I've done exactly this with corrupted windows installs but been successful as they weren't so far gone as to not register as simple volumes in an external setup. I'm sorry I don't know what to tell you to help other than maybe looking into data recovery software to see if it can make heads or tails of the files.
Only other suggestion would be trying a Linux or MacOS computer. Oddly enough those actually often have a better time dealing with partially corrupted drives than Windows does. It has worked for me in the past.

OMG thank you this totally worked. Did a quick google search and just came up with stupid message board threads that just went straight to suggesting the m2 stick is probably fried if the enclosure shows up on device manager but isn't showing up as a hard drive in file explorer. *eyeroll*
OK but what do you do when you click initialize and you get an error that says "[title] Virtual Disk Manager: [error] Incorrect function."

Thanks for the guide, especially the diskmgnt part! Never thought the stupid OS would not automatically assign a drive letter for the external SSD, and I thought it was the rare incompatible drive case or something before that as other computers can still recognize the USB drive.
i chose MBR because i am using my nvme as a primary drive replacement. Do i still need to format the drive before using samsung data migration for cloning?

I would stick to GPT still. It is a newer standard. I only do MBR when installing drives in older systems (years old). Like my old Lenovo laptop from like 2010. GPT partitions can still be boot drives.

have one, worked great, now its like my cable is bad. bought a new thunderbolt cable (never owned one before) still doesnt work. drive is formatted tho if i hold it just right it works so something is wrong with the enclosure as the cable works fine on my phones and everything else i try it with. (100watt cable)
It does sound like you probably have a hardware issue with the enclosure. Maybe the USB-C port as you said it helps when wiggling it a little. The hard part of reviewing products is we can’t use them for extensive time for durability testing usually. I’ve not had issues but I can see how others may.
One note: USB-C cables rated for their Power carrrying capacity (100w) are not advisable for data uses. There is a difference in data vs power cables and MOST cables you’ll find are power only. Especially longer ones. High speed USB-C cables are rarely more than 1 meter in length. That’s a good indicator sometimes.
@@MandicReally as it stands the cable I have is 3ft, a 10gbs data cable. 100wat capable. It is a data cable to which if your using usb-c gen2 ports this is the type of cable you want to use so you don't have random drops or dips in performance. But as there is something wrong, formatting the drive as fat32 instead has randomly caused the issue to DISAPEAR. Also, it's not any cable, it's not the port on the pc case, it's not the header as the boards brand new and anything I connect using any of my other cables (ones I didn't buy late last night early this morning) are all working fine with any device I have. So, this might be an issue with 5000 series and b550 boards running more than (2 nvme drives, 2 ssd drives, 1 hdd drive) said amount of drives as standard drives and has something to do with that. Or it could very well be the enclosure, or something on the drive.
You also do NOT get thermal pads of any kind with this enclosure that 3m double sided tape isn't thermally conductive at all. And asking 3m in emails about it will tell you so I'd suggest using one from another boards m.2 slot you have laying around if any or buying some since they're pretty cheap. Anyhow, issue isn't solved but at least now I can use the mfn drive without it sizzling water, bugging out, or COMPLELTY not allowing my pc to boot. Or my other pc for that matter (test bench) i.e. when this drives hooked up and I restart the pc or turn it on it's like a hard lock from bad voltage, or instability in ram but the pc just sets in post..... Something to think about for long term use.
As said tho it may be bc I have quite a few drive installed on my board. Both m2 slots filled, 3 sata ports filled but only two devices using usb mouse is wireless so doesn't matter. This same thing happens on the back port as well if the drive is set to NTFS format instead of exfat (fat32) which is what most usb flash drives are.....

Not the problem I have. For me, I get a letter but nothing is formattable. I connect the drive directly into my PC and it works flawlessly.
I mainly used this to transfer media files and go through the eject disk from the systray. On the computer the files where moved from the drive recognizes the files w/o a hitch, If I then plug into another computer the drive doesn't have the new files on it. I would have to scan-repair drive, but even that as of recently stopped working.
It's an inland nvme but my laptop reads it, my desktop reads it but my livingroom desktop(edit: it's a much older bulldozer system) doesn't (all windows 10). It's a shotty product, I regret buying it. So to be clear on older computers it may not work as expected My Legion (roughly 2019) and my desktop (2018-ish) both don't have any problems. I bought the bestbuy external enclosure one too and that one doesn't have the same issues so there's that.
Cache settings on both computers set to off, this was my suspected culprit.

Hey! I have this same issue with an INEO m.2 enclosure and a PNY CS3030 2TB. It's almost the same issue, except the disk does not specify how much space that is on it. When I try to initialize it, it gives the error "The request failed due to a fatal hardware error". If anyone has found a fix for this, it would be very appreicated!
Using the same one but its not showing up on my diskmgmt. Any ideas?
