The reason you've got so many wires to the coil and distributor is because there's what's called an ignition amplifier in the circuit, which replaces the points and uses a hall effect sensor in the distributor to trigger the amp to fire the coil. It's the same as on my Mk2 golf. The thing is, if you wire something up wrong or put power to the wrong place, you're liable to burn the amp out. You're right of course, you do need a wiring diagram, but you also need to investigate that alarm further and see where its wires go, because as others have said, there may well be a kill switch or immobiliser. You'll get this, don't worry! I'm up to my neck in wiring for my beetle cause I ended up removing the entire harness to repair it!

Clamp meter handy also earth tester. Try and track the wires back from the engine bay to the ignition for rodent damage I assume pre ECU??
No aftermarket immobiliser or indeed inertia switches?
Contact cleaner on the fusebox and check the connections on the rear of the fusebox for verdigris and rotten wires.
Check all relays, clean and reseat.
Basically the above is what I ran through on a Range Rover recently and identified a defective relay and a rotten feed from the starter solenoid to the ECU.

  • @jfv65

You bypassed the starter wiring, now you know:
    -The engine turns over
    --cilinders have compression
    - starter + starter solenoid work
    - you can power up the dash.
I have not seen any investigation into that car alarm.
That usually works by disableing the starter solenoid , power to ignition and power to electric fuelpump and any fuelvalve on the carb.
Inside those old alarm units there is often a battery to provide the alarm with some power in case a thief disconnects the big car battery. Those small alarm system batteries go bad over time which may contribute to this no start condition.
I think you should try to completely bypass that alarm module and then see what happens.

Futher to what I said, It looks like the plug going in has two wires going out to the distributor one going to what looks like some sort of relay box as it has the alternator charge wire and power from the stater connection on it and a final connection that splits into two wires that may be to power something else not directly related to the sparking circuit. The coil looks to earth via the body bolts. I think the wire going to the relay box is your postive feed in. Also looks like the distributor body has an earth via the engine block.

There's an aftermarket Selmar DIY car alarm on the Sana. It could have an interrupter on the ignition system - working a bit like an immobiliser. I had a similar Harry Moss - an equivalent level of 80's junk. The alarm is probably FUBAR y now and could have been installed by a 17 year old. I strongly suggest ripping it out and the associated wiring - there's about 12 wires that go everywhere and are likely held in with Scotchlocks. Scotchlocks on old fragile car wiring might well be hiding a broken wire.
Love the channel, keep it up.

Some power probes will allow you to test electrical components off the car. At least the engine turns over freely. It should be easy to get hold of a diagram for the Tipo and to check if there is some similarity or even if it is the pretty much the same.

I am only an amateur auto electrician, but I am a professional electronics engineer. When there is no schematic available, I am following the reverse engineering route. Apply logic. There is permanent power (30), switched power (15) and power for the accessories (75). You have managed to find the switched power already on the ignition barrel. Usually there is consistency in wire colours. You have a rudimentary schematic of the ignition system, if there are numbers on the schematic you cannot explain, this document might help:
    www.bosch-classic.com/media/en/bosch_classic/teile_1/switches/downloads_3/klemmenbezeichnungen.pdf
(Only the filename is in a language you don't master, the rest is in English)
Dammit. Wish I was there, I could have a field day, running wires, checking voltages. But you'll manage. Oh, what the others said, throw the immobiliser out.

Hi Ian, is the alarm still connected in the middle of the bulkhead? This can interrupt the main power to the ignition. If you can get a wiring diagram for a FIAT TIPO, this will help you on your way, it all looks the same, even the workshop manual is the same style as for FIAT, I recognize this from the time I was a mechanic at a FIAT- garage (long ago).

I have a feeling with all those cutoff switches and faffy things it is likely cutting spark without the ignition barrel, likely fuel as well, (could even be some immobilizer shenanigans since you're hotwiring it) so until we can emulate the signals the ignition barrel sends to whichever wire, i feel you're at a point where you're stuck, perhaps it would be best to order in a Yugo Sana ignition barrel and matching key? The boot and doors can use the old one if you even have it, what a joy to see the dash light up though! exciting times.

If you cross reference Unipart GCL175 or Intermotor 12601 it brings up your coil pack. £12 was the cheapest i've found with a quick search. But also a list of what its on including the Fiat Tipo, you can soon get the wiring diagram for that so at least you would know where the wires in the plug go. Also there in a breakers in the west country listing some bit for one on the bay of e at the moment. Hope this helps.

For the ignition...that SELLMAR Car Alarm is the problem.
That is the model "Double Pendulum" that has double kill switch, immobilizer key, driver and passenger door switch.
For that reason you haven't spark... Probably the pendulum switch is disabled, for that reason it doesn't make noises. But the immobilizer... Still works

Well it's nice to see a small amount of progress on the Sana. Also that Miss Hubnut was your assistant. I hope that you will be able to find a wiring diagram for the Sana. Keep up with the good videos & content.

I'm wondering if the aftermarket alarm might be disabling the ignition circuit. My Cavalier SRi broke down many years ago and actually blew the aftermarket alarm to bits. A quick lash up with a bypass wire fixed it.

  • @HowardLeVert
    @HowardLeVert 4 роки тому

Okay, some real progress here - dash lights are a good start! The alarm looks like it's already been chopped out of circuit but I would at least take it off the bulkhead if only to see if there are any surreptitious wires heading from it out of sight towards the fusebox which could cause problems. The ignition coil unit reminds me a lot of Honda's "ignition amplifiers" from the past, which were notorious for dying. Obviously it'll need power (one lead), one or maybe two wires to the distributor to power and/or pick up the output from whatever type of sensor is in there (Hall Effect or optical) plus maybe a ground and if the car has one, an output to a rev counter. At one point I did wonder if the earthy end of the HT winding of the coil is returned via a sensing resistor to detect if it is in fact sparking but that's something you usually see in cars with a full-blown injection system and an ECU (this is done to switch off injectors to stop cylinder washdown). If nothing else, a small test lamp will prove that power is getting to that ignition coil/module and you might need to trace wires from it to the distributor. I'm getting cautiously optimistic here...

Isn't that just an old Selmar alarm? I fitted a lot of those, don't remember them having any sort of Imobiliser on them?? Usually they worked on the door light switches and they had a pendulum to sense movement of the car.. The trick of a decent install was trying to hide the key switch rather than drilling the bodywork. I score 9/10 for replacing the passenger door lock with one on my Alfasud sprint and a 10/10 for fitting one in the dummy 2nd tank filler neck on my mini, of course I needed a key to remove the fuel cap on the dummy neck and then the key to work the alarm key switch, faffing was more in fashion back then .

It might be worth checking the electrics with a multi-meter, as low voltages can prevent ignition just as much as no voltage will, and you will at least be able to establish whether a circuit is working or not. Just separating connectors, cleaning them up, and then reconnecting them could make a big difference. Good luck with it.

Listening to the cranking sounds near the end of the video, you have a cylinder with no compression. Id do a compression test on all 4 cylinders. I'd also look for a ballast resistor, or blown fusible link or fuse for the main power lead to the fuse box.

If it’s essentially a Fiat Tipo engine would it not have the Magneti Marelli ignition system from the Tipo? If so it should be easier to get wiring diagrams. There used to be a Haynes manual for the Tipo. I had one for my 1.4DGT. Unfortunately I don’t think I still have the book.
