    An alternate history scenario asking what would happen if Japan had converted to and became a Catholic Christian nation. In particular we looked at the Emperor/Shogun power dynamic, the autonomous Daimyos and how they interacted with each other within the context of a disunited Japan, the historical introduction of Christianity through the Portuguese and Spanish, Art/Cultural ramifications of an adoption of Catholicism, Japan's early colonial empire, and many more factors. In particular the three unifying figures of Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu were focused upon too.

    I'm glad you didn't repeat that myth of Christmas being being pagan when talking about Christianity mixing with local traditions. A channel by the name of Inspiring Philosophy has done extensive research and shows that the Scandinavian pagans started copying the Christians, not the other way around. The Roman holiday of Saturnalia also had nothing to do with Christmas.
    You, Videntis and Possible History are now my favourite alternate history channels. I'm glad the void left by Moniseur Z and Whatifalthist after they started do political stuff is being filled. AlternateHistory Hub barely uploads these days.

      Whilst I never properly converted to Christianity, I remember watching Inspiring Philosophy and found him to make very compelling cases for thing (I think I was looking into Jesus' resurrection). Interesting to hear him disprove those elements of Christmas.
      That's great to hear man. It would be great to be as successful as the ones you've mentioned, if I work hard at it I believe I may eventually reach those levels.

    I highly believe, that if Japan went Christian, they would try to use the Samurai Class to form a Holy Order.
    They still existed in the 1600's and they still held territory and even fought against the Ottomans.
    So the Pope endorsing the creation of the Knights of the Rising Sun is a possibility.
    Specially if the Japanese go expansionists and use Religious Wars to expand.
    The Ming were also isolated, so both from a trade and religious perspective, the Pope (highly influenced by the Habsburgs) would definitely allow the Japanese to Crusade against Korea and China.
    Of course its all for opening the most profitable market at the time, the Chinese Market.

    I wonder how would it be if Russia introoduced Christianity to Japan ? Would it be possible , wnd at which time ?

    • @HistorysInfluence
      @HistorysInfluence  6 місяців тому +12

      Technically around the mid 1500s Catholocism was introduced by the Portuguese, whereas the Russians reached the Pacific Ocean around the mid 1600s. Perhaps Russia gets more aggressive in the far-east region, comes into conflict with Japan or befriends them, and orthodoxy spreads through osmosis. Sort of like how the Russians initially adopted orthodoxy from the Byzantines, after initially trying to siege Constantinople, then becoming allies. Although this potential orthodox conversion would be during the Tokugawa shogunate in the mid 1600s, so you would have to prevent that from occurring, and perhaps prevent a large spread of Catholicism like I've laid out in this timeline. Would be awesome to see.

    • @KougarManx468

      @@HistorysInfluence yeah cause l thought that Russia should've an esier time to spread orthodoxy to Japan due to being in a closser proximity to eachother compared to the Deutch and Portuguese . I feel like the appeal of japanese culture has a lot to do with how "different" and unique it is to the rest of the world because of it's philosophy, aesthetic, folklore,... If it was christianese they would have lost a lot of it's foklore, festival and kami because it is considered paganism, even anime are heavily inspired by shintoisme in general and they would be more connnected and borrow more from other christian country.
    At the end it would have been just an other western country but with asian people.

    • @youthoughtaboutit6946
      @youthoughtaboutit6946 5 місяців тому +10

      I wouldn’t be completely sure of that. Don’t forget, a lot of European folklore had its roots in pre-Christian ones, of which still exists regardless christianization, and only modified into non-religious forms.

    • @wires-sl7gs
      @wires-sl7gs 5 місяців тому +2

      European Christainity still adopted a lot of pagan elements, and it's not impossible that stuf like the Folklore, Festivals, and Kami would just take a more christain form or survive through secular story telling. Think of the Crhistainization of Scandinavia and how myths and beliefs about Trolls, Elves and Dwarves, and how they've come to influence Modern Fantasy Literature.

    Japan had the ability to reverse engineer the arquebuses. So i do believe in any Christian Timeline, the Japanese will reverse engineer the Caraval, the Carrack from the Portuguese and eventually the Galleon from the Spanish.
    With the techonological advantage, Japan that already had bad relations with Ming and Kore would inevitably attempt to invade Korea again.
    And with Western Tech, now being able to also produce it on their own, they would've entered the Colonial Game.
    And since they were became Christian, the Pope would've prevented any attempts at invading them.
    With the Galleon, the Japanese would be able to send Embassies to Europe, still take a long time to communicate.
    But the Pope would definitely approve of Japanese Expansionism on the excuse of converting Heretics.
    Also the ties between Japan and the Habsburgs would be pretty interesting. As basically Japan's main link to Europe is Habsburg Spain by the mid 1600's. Meaning Japan would inevitably get a favorable view of Spain, Austria and the Pope, while take a more negative opinion of Great Britain and the Dutch.
    This inevitably makes the Spanish and Portuguese Trade Empire to gain a valuable ally in the East, as Japan, going colonial, offers protection and trading rights to the Spanish and Portuguese.
    This severely weakens the East India Company, in fact it might even prevent its existance, as Spain gaining Japanese Trade Rights, would give them inmense wealth, enough to continue their wars in Europe, eventually winning the 80 Years War against the Dutch, and killing any hopes of independence.
    The Spanish don't have to worry about the English and Dutch raiding the Pacific with a powerful Christian Japan that has aligned with Spain.
    Because the Japanese would build Fleets. Since we know at some point they mass produced arquebuses and cannons for their war effort. They would do the same if they reverse engineer the ships too.
    The only reason Spain and Portugal never sold ships to Japan was because they were Heretics. But if they are Christian, and not only that give them exclusive trade rights. The profit is too much, for just handing them a few ships. And if they are able to build their own fleet, they will protect the trade in the area.
    Specially considering the main influence in this scenario would be the Portuguese and Spanish, rather than the Dutch in our timeline. Meaning Japan would also be very zealous to their interpretation of Christianity.

    That's all nice, BUUUUUT...
    *CONFESSIONALIZATION!!!!!!!!!*
    What about the reformation? What about Protestant teachings maybe _also_ entering Japan or attracting people of power and influence?
    Because the news of Christianity getting a foot into the doorway of Japan would invigorate Protestant theologians to press for the spreading of their teachings to Japan.
    After the Peace of Augsburg, there was practically a race of confessionalization between Catholicism and Protestantism in the HRE. I'm just saying "Calendar Conflict".
    Or would the ongoing Catholic-Protestant conflict and the buildup to the Thirty Years War (as well as the Thirty Years War itself) throw a heavy stone in those plans?

    • @HistorysInfluence
      @HistorysInfluence  5 місяців тому +1

      Interesting points you raise. I considered the Protestant reformation myself (I can't remember if I put it in the video), however I felt the influence from Spain and Portugal regarding Catholicism and Christianity generally would have prevented Protestantism from spreading to Japan. However the arguments you raise are certainly valid, and may very well have happened instead.

    I wonder if Japan in the advent of the rivalry with the US will try to forge an Austronesian Unity to have a great argument to keep the colonies while the US try their self determination approach in Europe after a potentially ww1. They would have to give independence to Korea then, and Indonesian colonies could be lost too, but if they manage to take New Sealand, Hawaii and the Phillipeans, and when they went that way, it could be that the following japanese republic could hold on to their austronesian colonies until today, even considered as true part of Japan if the unity approach succedes.
    And mandschuria will be independent, first of all, if japan manages to colonize mandschuria, the Qin Dynasty will not rise. That one is so heavy, that the consequences I cant tell. China could stay a maritine power under the Ming, what Japan will not find that nice. Or be owerthrown by another Dynasty, maybe even Japan itself, because they are the Qin Dynasty in this timeline. But even then, Mandschuria isnt "chinarized", they will keep their tungustic identity and will get their own nation state if china never manages to overtake it.

    Christianity is very hard in Asia because they love ancestor worship. It would be very good if they are Christian because it would actually saved them. Shinto has too many dark ritual which they don't talk about in the open. The leaders of any religious will do anything to stop their rule over the followers. So expects bad slander, gossips, and bribery to government officials to gain favors. These things made it very hard.
