so funny you two have the same thumbnail 😅😅 (still - we all know thumbnails like to change in first week 😂😂) just saw slew‘s video and HAD to check yours before i hop over to the podcast
What a handsome studio! We love seeing these artists' commitment to two fundamental exercises: on-site sketching and self portraits. When you do self portraits, no matter where you are or what time of day or night you like to work, that's one model who will always show up! Every artist should find out the sketching policy for every museum and living history site they plan to visit- there's no substitute for working from direct observation of important museum objects.
The usual policy within museums/galleries for walking around is notes or sketches in graphite pencil only, and grounds that fit in pocket/purse. I carry some index cards and a small bound sketchbook for thumbnails.
@@artofjesskarp yes! I remember when every OG vlogger was attempting it; be great to see the art community start it up again but with really render drawings if possible 😅😁 the little animation of the New York cab was fun too

I totally stepped out of my comfort zone and brought my sketchbook with some limited supplies on vacation with me. I sat on a beach and much preferred my sketchbook and art supplies over reading a book! I did about 5 sketches. And I Loved it!
Interesting, fun look at a collab of art vloggers. I think of drawing and painting as being such a solitary practice. It was really cool watching you and Slew vibing off each other's work and comparing notes. The podcast sounds interesting too with both of your takes on art school, the art world and life. I have a local museum where I sometimes go to sketch out, but it's been a while since covid. When you and Slew split up, I was hoping you'd randomly run into Pete Sinjin and his magic easel, painting plein air NYC street scenes. Seems like you guys had an awesome day!!
Jess, thank you so much for this video. I went to NY once 5 years ago and got to go to The MET when I was there. It was so nice to see some of it again. When you told that person, "You can," it made me think about how it's so easy to look at an artist with your skill and experience and think: "I could never do that," and not even try. However, because of how you present yourself, I've never thought that with you. And when you say, "You can!" I believe you. I really hope that person believed you, too.
Jess, you don't know how much impact you have on me. Because of you, I started to go out of my comfort zone and started urban sketching which I could have never been able to. You have gave more knowledge about art and shown me the beauty of reality and nature. Thanks Jess for everything ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yeah, loved the video!! The happy energy of the two of you together, the sketch date and the editing as well. Great job Jess. And YES to more sketchdates, you know you're welcome in the Netherlands anytime 😊 ❤️
@@artofjesskarp definitely. Between the national gallery, the national portrait gallery, and the natural history museum there is always something to draw. They don’t have a collection of ancient Roman sculptures like the met, but there are lots of 19th century sculptures (and animals) scattered throughout. I like to draw from the old master paintings as well, and there are plenty of those. In Baltimore there is the Walter’s museum that is also free and I see their collection as a mini MET. They also have some Roman sculptures etc…
