The last Dremel I got was over 14 years ago and the tool still works and don’t have problems with it since you let the tool do the work without forcing it to do the work.

What you purchased makes sense, for the application. I did the same with my Bosch multi-tool. I needed to cut brick, something multi-tools are not designed to cut. I wasn't going to risk the Bosch, so I purchased a cheap Ozito (Australia). It did the job and if I burnt it out, it was a cheap replacement.

I had a cheap harbor freight chigaco electric power tools model and if was ok. While it ran it was about as good as a Dremel. It didn't seem to overheat any more often than the Dremel and the torque was ok. (And I overheat Dremels constantly, and have destroyed a few real and fake ones) . The first problem I had was that the little nib wore that holds the shaft still when you change the tool wire off. I was able to repair that by drilling it out and putting in a pin made from a grade 8 screw.itvseems they didn't use a hardened piece of steel. After about a year or a year and a half or so of heavy abuse the motor burned out. Dremels usually last maybe 2-3 years with a repair or two along the way. So my take on the cheap rotary tools in general and harbor freight in specific, is that it was a pretty good deal. I think I paid something like 15 bucks for it with a coupon. They go for 25 now, so with a 20% coupon it's 20. So I would call it a decent buy. Assuming you get one that works. Harbor freight tools can be spotty. I would definetly buy either from Amazon or harbor freight because you can easily exchange it if it does not work out of the box or quits the first time you use it.

These rotary tools are low torque so you have to use a light touch and let the speed of the tool do the work or you will burn them up every time. The Proxxon micromot rotary tool has the torque you likely need for you usage

My bits slipped out of the cheap flex shafts too. I took the collet out, and dipped some thin rope in isopropyl and put it through the collet. Then I stood on one end of the rope, held the other end, and yanked the collet up and down the rope. Pull the rope around and clean the collet. You have to keep things clean. Then your burs won't slip as much.

@@CarvingFusion Save the time? You were the one who said your bits wouldn't stay tight, not me. And I guess now you've bought a better one so you don't need my advice anymore. Ok. Well you should still clean your freakin tools man then you won't develop little problems like that. It's not like Dremel has self cleaning collets. They're just regular collets ok?

Great 'honest opinion' video. I bought my 'Dremel multi 395 type 5' in 1997 and apart from a few stuck collets and a slightly slack/floppy speed control, it's never let me down. I thought I'd upgrade it this week. So I ordered a keyless chuck and a flex shaft. Both items are unbranded. They arrived today. The new keyless chuck was a very simple swap over and it works perfectly. But I wish I could say the same for the flex shaft. I bought it from ebay. It comes supplied with 3 x different sized brass collets and a 'L' shaped circular tool that you use to lock/jam the spindle from turning when you tighten the collet nut around the bit shaft. The business end of the flex shaft works as it should. But the end that attaches to the 395 drive shaft is a different story. The sellers description seemed detailed enough. It had clear photos with all dimensions highlighted. The female 19mm threaded aluminium flex shaft connecter is the same diameter as the male on my 395, but it's a completely different thread pitch. The new FS is advertised as being compatible with "any/all rotary tools" inc Dremel. If I didn't need the flex shaft in a hurry, I would have returned it and got a refund, but i ordered it for next day delivery because i couldn't finish a job without it. So i had no choice. It had to go onto my 395 no matter what. I wouldn't recommend the following method, but not cos it doesn't work. Its cos it's a lot of messing about. I ended up grinding down the entire aluminium female thread until I was left with a virtually smooth surface. My idea was to make it a 'push fit' connector. But it was still too tight. So I cut 4 full length slots in the connector and gently eased it over the thread on the 395. Eventually I got it all the way on and held it in place with a top quality jubilee clip. I've never used a dremel flex shaft before, therefore I don't know what they're meant to feel like and sound like. My adaption/modification is solid as a rock and it more than coped with finishing the job I needed it for. But every now and then the shaft would vibrate and make a noise. The type of noise and vibration I'd expect from running a tool that's in need of some lubrication. Do you think smearing a bit of grease on the flex shaft might help? Will grease stop it intermittently vibrating and screaming ? If you think it will work, I'll happily strip it down . But I'm not looking forward to going through all that again if it's going to be a waste of my time. Thanks in advance to anyone who has the answer I'm looking for.

Dremel SUCKS! The biggest $180 purchase mistake EVER!! I bought the 4200 with 'EZ change mechanism'. It lasted less than 50 uses. I only used sander drum and belts.I had to have the stupid chrome case! The drums never held the sanding belts, the 2 pulldown release levers suddenly stuck one day, and the drums kept falling out -the motor started cycling up and down in speed (NEVER used above 10k.) A genuine Piece of $HIT!!

Beautiful work Jordy! And , being a Dremel carver myself with a 4300, I know the power of the beast of a tool it is. Also, make sure you fill out the warranty on it. If you do all it will cost you to get it fixed/replaced is shipping and possibly like $14 American if they have to replace it. I'm not knocking anything that your saying, Jordy, Dremel Is expensive, but the only thing that I don't like about my Dremel is that I can't find a attachment to fit the quarter inch shaft of the larger Kutzall burrs. I'd love to find a cheaper way to use those Burrs to get to some larger carving. Got any suggestions Jordy?
