This is an instructional video of how to catch Mew, the 151st Pokemon in the original Red and Blue versions, without the use of a cheating device, and on your first trip to Cerulean City.
Answers to common questions:
1. The trainer with the Slowpoke needs to walk up to you as shown in the video. You cannot walk just one block in front of him, or else your game will freeze.
2. This was done on a Pokemon Blue ROM. The reason for all the color is because the emulator I used to play it was a Super GameBoy emulator and the emulator uses colors which are not the same when you play the game with an actual GameBoy Color.
3. Yes, this also works on Pokemon Yellow.
4. No, this does not work in Fire Red and Leaf Green. This was a glitch which was not intended to be left in the game (just like Missingno) and was taken out in the much cleaner and glitch-free Fire Red and Leaf Green.
5. An easier way to catch Abra is to catch a Caterpie in Viridian Forest and level it up to a Butterfree until it learns Sleep Powder (level 15 in yellow, level 17 in red and blue) and when it's faster than an Abra.
6. The music is called # for Arnhem Land (Long Edit) by Aalborg World Soundtracks, not Sympathy for the Devil by The Rolling Stones. I had to change the music but I actually like the new track better.

I recall doing a similar glitch, when I was a youngster, involving surfing on the east coast of cinnabar island. which I i longer can remember the process. so a glitch like this was around back in 98

I actually bumped into this glitch long before Mew glitch was released and noticed a lvl 7 gengar appeared on the bridge. I thought it was cool so I caught it of course. I was playing on an emulator so I figured it was a useful to get gengar without trading. Little did i know that it could also be used to acquire mew. once the mew glitch was discovered I also found a few more methods for obtaining Mew using different trainers who had pokemon with the necessary special stat to make a new appear. For example the first trainer in mistys gym has a shelder that has the same special as the slowpoke from the youngster. This actually helps you get mew a few minutes earlier than the method in this video.

HOW IT WORKS (explained like you're 5):
When you fly away from the first trainer battle you'll notice that the trainer sees you right before you fly away, which causes the game to think that you're in a battle. This is the reason why the start button won't work afterwards (since you can't pause the game in battles).
You then fight the trainer in route 24. Why him? Because his pokemon has a special stat of 21. This number will make sense soon.
After having fought the second trainer you exit battle state, and you menu will now work. You then re-enter the route in which you skipped the first trainer, which will cause the game to realize there is an unfinished battle in this route. The game panics and forces a wild pokemon encounter, but how will the game know what pokemon to spawn?
Strangely enough, the game uses the special stat of the pokemon you last battled to determine which pokemon you will find. In this case that number is 21, which corresponds to Mew's identifying number (this has nothing to do with the Pokedex number).
As you can see, this glitch can be used to find ANY pokemon you want.

Mew is such a fucking troll. the first time i did this, I had 9 pokeballs, and he broke them all. After reseting, i stocked up, and had 22 pokeballs. The first one I threw caught him.

Imagine trying to catch Mew in real life. I could imagine it would be something like: Travel to New York, Fly all the way to LA from NYC, talk to an old man there at exactly 3:00 in the afternoon, fly all the way to Michigan and STEAL a shovel from Wal-Mart. From there, swim across the Great Lakes into Ontario Canada and dig with that shovel for a pretty rock. Fly all the way to Panama City Beach and skip that rock across the ocean until it hits a boat. Then walk on foot up to Birmingham Alabama, stand in the middle of the street at midnight and say "I love sucking dick!" 570 times... And finally, Mew will appear right behind you and fight you.

There wasn't any internet info like there is now so you had to get a cheat code book. It would let you know what square to go to or steps to capture pokemon easier.
To answer the most common questions:
YES this is real.
YES this works in Yellow.
NO this doesn't work in Fire Red/Leaf Green.
NO this won't ruin your game if you do it right.
Does this work in Pokemon red and blue

Probable chain of event:
Someone tried to fly/teleport away at the same instance a trainer saw the player. Found that the start button was disabled. Spread it on the internets as a 'fun bug'.
Later found out that if they went to the same place they got, ah, disabled, it would kick off a random battle with a pokemon they shouldnt have been able to find there.
Someone pokes about and discovers that the pokemon number that they fight is the same as the value of the special attribute of the last pokemon you fought. They then find a trainer that has a pokemon with the same special value as the pokemon number of Mew.
You can catch any type of pokémon this way, as long as you have a trainer that you can teleport away from at the same time as the (!) pops up above their head, and a trainer that has a pokemon with the same special value as the pokemon you want to catch :).
This would mean accessing an existing mew file, what I'm wondering though is why they even have mew in the game if it isn't accessible by conventional ways.

If you want to get him immediately to level 100. Follow this: find a Pokemon that knows growl. Battle the same kid with the slowpoke and use growl on him six times. Once you use growl on him defeat the trainer and teleport back to the Pokemon Center. Once you encounter Mew it will be level one instead of level 7. Catch it and go find a low level wild Pokemon in the grass. Switch around and make every Pokemon in your party battle it, including Mew. If you get him experience points that is a lower amount than what makes him level up to level 2, he will immediately level up to level 100. This can also be shown in a video series called "Glitch Quest" by a UA-camr named Sckyoh or something like that.

You can actually make the mew level 100 intantly by growling the slow poke 6 times. the mew will be level 1 and if you get lower than like 54 experience on it during battle it goes straight to level 100
I caught him at level 100 years ago, but that ruined my pokemon amarilla account (yes it's in Spanish), it was boring to have a pokemon that powerful when all of my other pokemons weren't even at level 35... So years later on pokemon rojo I caught him at level 7 I think and then I leveled him up 😊

Also, you can teach Mew Mega Punch early on with a TM and it's pretty devastating. Mew also levels up REALLY fast. The glitch is really hard to mess up and even if you do, all you do is turn it off and turn it back on and re-try. It doesn't delete your game or fuck it up in any way whatsoever.

Ima WreckU At some point, someone with inside knowledge would have to have leaked a glitch that was this cryptic. Even with millions of people around the globe having potentially tried countless obscure things to find Mew in the original games, glitches like this are pretty specific. Tons of false legends like the using SURF around the ship before the ship can leave get made that just frusterate he crap out of people, but at some point, someone with inside knowledge from the start had to have revealed this to someone, and it slowly spread. Keep in mind these games were popular well before the internet took off on a major manstream commercial, residential basis, so spreading the word about video game glitches wasn't nearly as easy in the late 90's as it was even by the mid-2000's. Game secrets were MUCH easier to keep extremely secret and cryptic in the earlier eras of gaming.
I know. I remember playing Pokemon at recess and lunch against kids using Link Cables lol. This glitch came in 2003 allegedly so I think the internet was enough of a thing at that point for GameFAQs and other sites relating to cheats and forums for games to be a big thing. So, entirely possible at that point to compile information between people and figure it out. Anyone before then though must've just been a genius at bootleg code writing in the game I guess XD

It's all to do with how the game changes between different "states" and this was found out by fans.
If someone with "inside knowledge" which I'm assuming you mean the devs knew about this, it would have been corrected before release. You make it sound as if it's intended when in reality that's far from the case >_>
Ima WreckU This specific glitch was discovered by kevdude16 in 2003. He named it the "Teleport Mew Glitch" and revealed it on Gamefaqs in TheSythe's "Mew Glitch Faq". A quick google search will show you this is all truth.

I don't know how many other people know this, but you can actually get 2 Mews at that point. You can get the first Mew after teleporting away from the NPC and fighting the trainer with the Slowpoke like the person playing did in this video. And the second one, you can get by teleporting away from the NPC and then fighting the first gym trainer in Misty's gym, then going back to Nugget Bridge and boom. Another Mew will show up.
Okay ffs guys, I keep seeing comments "when I walk to the slowpoke trainer the game freezes" Did you even watch the video? You have to make space for him to walk, not just go up and "HI CAN I BATTLE U"

Just caught this on Pokemon Red which I downloaded from the Nintendo Shop yesterday on my 3DS. For those that may have missed Jigglypuff like me, Clefairy can learn Sing at Lv. 13. I raised it to Lv. 16 and used a Moon Stone. By that time it's Speed Stat was more than high enough to put Abra to sleep. It took me a couple of tries to get the game pause before the guy walked up to me but I did it eventually. And now after 18 or so years, and numerous times Surfing around the S.S. Anne as well as trying to find a key for that truck hoping Mew would be under there, I finally have, for the first time, and actual MOTHERFUCKING MEW :D
It works on Pokemon Blue in the 3DS. I just did it. I have my lvl 7 aborable Mew. Her name is Angel. I have my beloved elusive psychic kitty at last.

All these years I tried various ways to catch a Mew. I tried the famous one about the ship (not getting mn CUT from the captain so the ship will never leave and you can return after getting SURF and all of this). Nothing ever worked.

When my link cable comes through the post in 2 days and I can transfer all my Pokemon off my blue cart onto the red which is full of all my Pokemon Stadium gems, I'm gonna start a brand new file and see if this works! I REALLY hope it works on a GBA-SP and that my game doesn't crash! Amazing upload, now I know what to do!

+Rainbow Phoenix I can actually confirm that Mew is under the truck inside the glitched SS Ann area. What you need is to level a Machoke to level 100 without any rare candies, teach it strength, and then evolve it to Machamp, then you can have Machamp move the truck and then you can catch Mew. It will be level 70.

Don't worry, you can still get mew later in the game with essentially the same glitch. Just look up the mew glitch on Bulbapedia.

Mew would have still had at least 1 hp left. You can tell when you look closely at how much the first critical hit took off.

Yea I think it's just because Abra can be annoying to capture since you only get one shot before he teleports so they just recommend the wiggilytuff to put that fucker to bed before you try and capture him. But you're right it'd probably be faster to cut the crap and just keep trying without a sing.

2nd attempt, I tried without jigglypufff, first pokemon i ran into was metapod. Then Abra appeared. Caught him first try. Woot.
I'm stoked that I now know how to catch mew, but I'm also confused because I remember "Sympathy for the Devil" having more lyrics and a sweet bassline
The easiest way to acquire Mew is by doing what the video maker showed. I would also add that you could make it much easier on yourself if you waited until you can buy a Great Ball, Ultra Ball or receive the Master Ball from defeating Team Rocket. Then you could use the "duplicate items" glitch. For those of you who don't know what I'm referring to, it goes like this.
1. In the town of Viridian City, walk up as if you were heading to the Viridian Forest and there will be a man pacing back and forth.
2. Talk to him and he will ask you if you're in a hurry or something along those lines. Tell him no and he'll show you how to catch a Pokémon.
3. Then fly to Cinnabar Island. Be sure to have the item you want duplicated in the sixth spot on your items list (move items by pressing select).
4. On the east side of the city, start surfing up and down the coast. You'll run into a lot of different cool Pokémon (I've caught a level 151 Mewtwo and Snorlax). You'll also finally run into something named "Missingno" or "M" or sometimes it's just a glitch. Escape from the battle and you should have over 100 of that item (duplicate your Master Ball and you'll have no problem catching Mew or any other Pokémon for that matter).
But if you want to get Mew early in the game, you'll have to catch an Abra. You don't have to use Jigglypuff or Wigglytuff. I tend to use Pikachu because it knows Thundershock and Thunderwave, rendering its opponents paralyzed. And yes, you'll still need a shit load of Pokeballs. You can catch another Mew by doing the same glitch and then battling the second trainer in Cerulean Gym. You can also get different Pokémon by doing the glitch on other Pokémon trainers (remember, let the trainer walk over to you or else your game will freeze). Also, be mindful of saving your game often. Hope this helped all of the gamers out there.

I did this, and to my suprise, it worked! I was running out of pokeballs, catching Mew, then I finally caught him, and traded him over to my copy of Silver, because after a certain time I close Red, it deletes the save file, so yes, I basically pulled this off perfectly, without saving, you could say.
I am so happy I have my own Mew in Silver! I will train him as much as I like!
This is an awesome video, I've done this twice... a little advice though. Don't bother trying to get a jigglypuff with 25 speed. I raised mine to lvl17 and it still wasn't close (use your moon stone for a nidoking). While leveling it up I ran into an abra almost immediately, the 2nd one I caught without sleep status or anything on one pokeball and ran into a 3rd on my way out of the grass. Training jigglypuff is a crap grind with no payoff. If you want to catch it for sleep to help with the mew battle just use it at whatever level you catch it.

Butterfree has better speed and learns sleep powder at level 17, so it doesn't have to be Jigglypuff. The hardest part is pressing start before the trainer sees you.
When an attack says that it doesn't effect the Pokémon, I've always thought that it will never effect them.

I never knew it was that simple to get Mew. Back 12 years ago or so when I played this game I always thought you needed a Game Shark to do this. Wow. I feel like I wasted my childhood not knowing this! Haha.

1:45, do you have to teleport away from this trainer specifically, or can you do this with any trainer if possible because I saved the slowpoke guy.
If you go into the files you will see Mew. Now with the trainer teleporting glitch that was involved in many different glitches as well, so someone decided that they were going to spend hours on end trying to find another glitch. Oh and that spot where your menu pops up, that has to do with multiple glitches as well. Hope this helps.

Before battling the Slowpoke trainer, do I have to battle the others before doing the glitch? Or does the glitch make it so they're disabled apart from the SLowpoke one?

Its been 7 years scince I last watched this video, my first youtube video... and im not ashamed to admit that i almost cried.
This actually works with every similar trainer. The ones that challenge you as soon as they pop on your screen. All you need to do is what the video shows (walk into him, teleport). Then battle >ANY< other trainer that needs to WALK to fight you, if he doesnt walk game gets stuck. When the scenery changes same thing will happen. Repeat the process as many times as you can find a trainer to fight. Random pokemons appear to battle you not just Mew, all level 7. I got a Kangaskhan and a couple of Nidoqueens aswell.

however i used FLY not TELEPORT, the result is the same... the first time I tried, my game freeze in front of the guy with the slowpoke, then i reload, walked far from him and everything went straight!

it seemes you do this glitch, but if you fight other people, other pokemon will appear
If you use 6 Times Cry (I'm German so it could be whatever. German Word: Heuler) then the Pokemon you will see is on lvl. 1. Do a fight with a low leveld pokemon and let the lvl. 1 Pokemon get at least 12 EPs or so. Then it would turn into a lvl. 100 Pokemon :D
