It is good to point this out. This is not new for me (I am an amateur, but not a beginner)- but I still need to do it (my first finger tends to be to high in first position especially). I also started to play with drones. But it is a really good idea of just practising it like that with a scale. So that the right note is in your ear.
Absolutely, using drones is great!!! I use them a lot to tune phrases/melodies that outline a certain key. This video is also to help people who may not be familiar to drones/dislike their harsh timbre. Celli & I will gladly be the drone for you dolls! 🤣
I was searching for ‘beginner cello intonation’ and found your video. Thank you! With this exercise and the help from a tuner I realized that my ear tends to go for a slightly sharper note for the second note. Doing it slowly and carefully does help make it in tune. My question is, do you recommend using this primarily for ear training, or do you also use it to form the muscle memory of finger positions, so to speak? And what other methods would you recommend to make the finger positions reliably accurate? Thank you!
CD, great video. One suggestion.... it may be better not to call your viewers "dolls". Some may not be able to identify with that term in a positive manner. Light suggestion only. Really great work!
For me as an absolute beginner on the cello your videos are a great help. Glad that I have found your channel.. thank you. But it looks so easy when you play it.. Would you recommend to practice with a tuner to confirm the consonance?
Hi Sebastian, welcome to the Doll family & I'm so glad you find these videos helpful! If it looks easy for me...it's because I've had 19yrs of practice 😜, it was hard for me too in my early years! So the exercise focuses on relating 2 notes and training your ear so they match. What you could do is use a tuner for the FIRST note only and look away/close your eyes when you play the other octave. If you rely 100% on the tuner, then your ear may not train as fast. You could also play along with Celli & I with headphones on, as a tuning guide. Hope this helps!
You're FAB!
This was great I will certainly come back to this thank you for doing this and make it easy to follow along
Thank you so much. I needed this. I'm looking for ways to test and improve intonation.
Thank you Cello Doll! I will practice it!
Fantastic! Can't wait to hear how you like this new exercise! Own it! 💪🏻🎻
