Scheib I'm sure you're lovin the PCW4000. You're right the cone would have made skidding a lot easier. Chris and I put about 12 hours on new Portable Winch the first week I got it and boy what a backsaver it is. Stay Safe! 👍TCT

I’ve winched tons of trees and the nose cone helps. I found that a few scrap PVC pipes help to throw under the log to reduce friction and steer them better. Speeds things up a ton and saves the winch from bogging down.

The cone works so great. It looks cheezy like it's a novelty or joke but it's a difference between night and day. Once you use it you will never want to use it without out it... keeps you from having to clear a path. It will walk the log around trees and stumps and over that stuff you shoved to the side.

Awesome setup. My back was breathing a sigh of relief just watching you. In addition to the nose cone, one more word of advice, Invest in some 1/2" shackles to replace those carabiners. From experience, the carabiners are not made for the surging, jerky movements. What will happen after a while is the metal will fatigue and stretch, locking it closed. Hope it helps....

Gotta hand it to you , for trying roadside winchin. Rigging snatch blocks up at a elevated reach height 6 foot or better will make for easier pullin. I still think your truck in 4 Low w/smooth low Medium throttle will out pull your winch time wise. I use my 8000 Lb upright warn winch as last resort Firewoodin. Your buddy give you a good tip w/neutral emergency brake parking. Always safer with two people firewoodin together. I still think 30-50 yards 3/8 wire rope would serve you well. Your nickle your call. I like wire rope chokers w/10-12" loop on one end, with a Bell & Nub on the other. Look around For a swaging Crimper & you can make your own chokers any length you want. With a little practice winchin Roadside logging will make it a lot easier for you. Take a run at it.

Man, I wish I had one of those! Whole bunch of dead White Ash trees out in the bush, down an embankment. Footing is tricky as hell, because this site is used to dump yard waste, tree trimmings, chips, dirt, concrete chunks, etc. Also, the grove of dead trees they come from is FULL of widow makers, and hung up trees- NOT eager to cut in there!
Due to all the new houses going in, they've raised the level of the dumpsite by close to 10', with all the excess dirt and torn out concrete and asphault. Cured the issue of the spring/fall mud pit for good, but the edges and banks- where all the wood, leaves etc are exposed make for very difficult footing. And that's where the Ash trees they've knocked over are... NOT fun, working with a chainsaw, while trying not to fall. If I could just pull them up onto the solid top, that'd be awesome.
The nosecone would be the bees knees for getting around all the obstacles. Stuff is rock solid, and nearly seasoned as-is. I hate to see it just left to rot...

I made a "skidding shoe" years ago, like a ski for the nose of the log so its not digging in, would be an option for possibly skidding 2 for 1. A second snatch block for redirection could be handy too.

Scheib, I'm sure the nose cone would have helped but you have a ton of logs you could have put under the logs to make is easier to drag and it wouldn't have dug up the ground as much either. But that thig is a work hourse for sure!

  • @jean-williambergevin1209
    @jean-williambergevin1209 Місяць тому

You should use the skidding cone from Portable Winch! Would prevent the log from digging in therefore less friction and an easier pull. Might even save you the use of a pulley at the log on most job!

@@OutsidewithScheib I used it in the woods today! Took some thinking to plan things out but I ended up clearing a bit of a “landing” as a staging area for pulls from different directions. Then it was a straight shot to the truck.
The skidding cone (looks kinda dorky) but is well worth it IMO…
Took down some hung up trees as well. 👍🏻

  • @JesseLJohnson

These winches are pretty slick. I could have used them a few times. I usually just cut them to 10-15 foot length and drag them out with my ATV, SxS, or tractor. Every now and then it is in a place to tight or there is something hung up. I would consider getting some wheel chocks to put behind your tires when you are pulling. You def don't want to just put it in park at least have the parking break on. Not to good on the tranny.

    Skeptical.
They just don't look like it's got enough ass..
Max pulls 2200 pounds or so . Most logs weigh more than that for what we do every day..PLUS the friction of the ground- be like pushing your truck while someone holding the brakes on lol

You have to watch the drum and the rope while you're winching, if you aren't pulling enough on the rope, or if the load is too heavy, the drum will spin faster than the rope is moving and you'll damage your rope.

Scheib, that looks like one heck of a tool. That will certainly cut your time rolling rounds. Thanks for showing us your winch in action. Logs that big got to pull really hard. Do you think if you went with an 8ft or 12ft log you would save time. I know you have more logs to pull but it wouldn’t take as much time. Just a thought. I have never seen these tools work before . Have a good one whooo .

Is there any advantage if your anchor tree spot was higher on the tree. Would it help if your choker was like 10 feet down the log? Just asking because I don’t know. I’m thinking I should learn more about it though. Good video fellas!

    • @OutsidewithScheib
