Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

We used floating row covers for the first time last year for our broccoli--we loved it! We bought a couple bolts of fine tulle instead of the actual row covers, and it worked fantastically. We also had some wire sign frames given to us, like you put election signs on, so we used those for our frames, instead of hoops. They worked perfectly, lol. Thank you for all of your helpful advice--we started our gardening later in life, so are learning a lot by watching your videos.

That wood stove in the background looks mighty inviting. When young on grand parents farm (many Moons ago), they had a wood stove not too different, Grandma would often have a pot of various items simmering away on a cooler area to make a rich broth for all kinds of stews and soups which would make the house smell wonderful and lift your spirits on a real crappy day.

I got a woven fabric ground cover that is used as road base or parking lots. It's 12' wide. Know what you mean about weeds. And in the south, where you have bermuda grass, that stuff still works it's way under and through woven weave fabric. I have seen it work it's way under solid plastic, too.

The hydroponic lettuces are growing slowly but still growing. Today is a great day to start seeds for the farmers market. The cold won’t last forever.

The woven ground cover is amazing. I will say if you are hand watering with a hose or watering can, it can be tricky. The water will run off. Heavy rain will run off some too. I use to water with a hose, but you had to make sure you watered right at the base of each plant. I now use soaker hoses under the fabric.

If you are looking for future material to video, would very much like to see a step by step video dedicated to your irrigation system setup, specifically the pressure reducer connection, fertilizer injector setup, how often you fertilize, how often you water with the weed fabric and for how long you water. I have seen the video you did on layout of supply hose and drip tape installation and you talk about it a bit, would just like more detail of what is working for you.

It is VERY WINDY here and my garden is big enough that I would need a ton of rocks or bricks (which we've used in the past and hated) to anchor the row cover, so....we have adapted this idea. This takes a lot of time (good winter project) so I'm not necessarily suggesting you do it, but here's what I did. I have made netting covers from a variety of things (tulle, broken soft-top gazebo (and used the solid parts as shade cover over my small green house), sheer curtain remnants) and sewed or crocheted loops around the outside edge. I used up crochet cotton from an abandoned project on my first project and then I bought twisted cotton twine for the rest of them. We bought a bunch of plant supports from Dollarama to hold the covers above the plants and poke their bottom ends through the loops and then into the ground on the outside of the raised beds. When we need to harvest or weed we just slide the loop up and clip it in place so we can reach inside. Worked wonders; we had the best garden ever last year!

I am feeling the Blah this year. I have the red/blue LED lights, and I typically have them about 12 inches above my seedlings, and have not experienced light burn yet. I also supplement with a Daylight Simulator 100W bulb two feet above the plants, and it seems to provide a "goal" for them to reach for. I appreciate the wealth of knowledge your channel provides, and I am getting my chicks in early March.

I have been growing under grow lights for a while. I used a PAR meter under each type of light brand to get the distance correct. 10"-14" is the common distances I have found with my brands. Meters are expensive, the grower supply store here has one and tested it on the spot for free. Also I use a pair of special sunglasses around the brighter lights while I'm working under them. Wattage is also important, seed starting uses lower wattage. You don't want to use a high output light to start seeds, if you do watch the distance. Good luck, Love my lights, Got 27 pinto bean plants growing in my house under light for the last month. Tomato's and peppers are starting now. We grow a lot of food under grow lights. God Bless

I found BeamWorks Aquarium plant grow lights for my seed starting and they don't burn the seedlings. They grew the sturdiest healthy plants ever. I got the 52 25K lumens for $49 for 4' on Amazon. The bonus of these lights is they have white, green, red, and blue in combination and they do not hurt your eyes since they are in my living room. also, I use the ground fabric you use to cover the ground around my tall raised beds and I love it for that use. I am always barefooted and the black is not hot on bare feet at all, it also allows the rain to soak into the soil, and there are no weeds. I love it! I am planning on 3 more beds that will have it around them. I also got the fabric and the agrobond from Growers solutions with your code. 💞

Thank you for mentioning that the woven weed cover is compatible with organic gardening!
That was what I was questioning!
Stay warm and safe these next weeks!

Granted there is a lot of garbage on UA-cam, but there is a lot of very useful information on UA-cam as well. It can be a great resource for many things.

For tension wire, typical is 7 gauge. The big box stores may only carry 9 gauge, but that should work. Farm supply stores should also have it in smaller rolls 171 feet for some reason).

Good morning from our farm in Central New Hampshire. We purchased that woven ground cover through Johnnys Seeds in Maine and we love it! Our kitchen garden is small, compared to yours, so some of the rows have planting gaps that are easily weed managed. Other rows we burned holes. What a game changer! I will buy more for my woodland garden once that gets established. I will keep in mind to factor in the sloping sections. Also appreciate the info regarding the floating row cover. Thanks for this Q&A ! ~ Diane

Last year we invested in a small indoor hydroponic system. The instructions for lighting said to keep the lights about 24" above the plants.

That wood stove looks so good & toasty right now. Great info. I used the 30 yr professional woven landscaping fabric found at Menards for ground cover with success for several years. Anything to weed less! I think your fabric is much thicker. I don't have a torch so I just cut an X where I plant smaller transplants, but tomatoes I cut a big circle so I can make a foot wide watering well for each video. I bought my first packets of seeds, getting so excited! Thanks for another great video.
