For nearly 30 years, Ralph Peterson has been one of the most distinctive and recognizable drummers in jazz. His talent and drive as a drummer, composer, arranger and bandleader set him apart as a Master among his peers. In 1980, Ralph was accepted into the Jazz Studies program at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Some of his teachers there included Kenny Barron, Paul Jeffrey and drummer Michael Carvin.
Peterson met master drummer Art Blakey in 1983. A few months after sitting in, Blakey called Peterson (then a college junior) to play along side him in his two-drummer big band. This was for a performance at the Boston Globe Festival. Ralph continued in the Jazz Messenger Big Band until Blakey's passing. Peterson takes seriously the honor and responsibility of being the "Last Messenger Drummer" and later paid homage to Blakey on his 1992 recording "Art." In 1985, a year after his graduation from Rutgers, Peterson was hired to perform with piano giant Walter Davis Jr., as well as with trumpeter Jon Faddis. Ralph has since become a member of the jazz elite. His recording and touring resume includes jazz greats like Terrence Blanchard, Branford Marsalis, Stanley Turrentine, David Murray, The Count Basie Orchestra, Betty Carter, and Michael Brecker.
Hope you enjoyed this video on jazz drumming

RIP Ralph. Thank you for your beautiful talent and personality.
R.I.P. RALPHIE!!! I will never forget our childhood years in Pleasantville! on the Little League team and P.H.S. Band.
The paradiddle-diddle comping with the swing ride pattern is sick!
The rudiments are the granddaddy of musical genres
Parra diddle-diddle: I'm a jazz drummer of little consequence here on the west coast. 77 years old. Shelly manne I believe pretty much pioneered that lick... filling in the spaces between ride beat s. I think of it as a Shelly Diddle. Would like to see him get at least some recognition for a lifetime of solid bandsman ship. I love what your doing. Keep it up!
3:10 - dat grin like "you're gonna have lots of fun with these" :D
rest in paradise master drummer
Been playing drums off and on for years, but decided recently to take it seriously. Jazz is a style I've always wanted to play, and this lesson is great. I love the confident way he plays, the pulse of the groove just makes me wanna jump on my kit right now! Thanks!
This should serve as a timecapsule comment. How do you see yourself ten years after this comment was written?
A great Jazz drummer and lesson. Was sorry to read in the comments about his passing. May his sweet soul Rest in Peace Amen.
RIP Ralph, Thanks for the inspiration
Grandissimo Maestro!!! Riposa in Pace 🙏🏾🌹❤️✨
Mr. Ralph Peterson is GREAT!!!! PERIOD!!!! Since the very first time I saw him in the mid-eighty's, at Carnegie Hall, I've been CRAZY about his drumming. I applaud him for sharing with everyone, for free, the language of JAZZ DRUMMING. I own just about every recording this man has played on. And yet, till this very day, I still can't get enough of this man's drumming vocabulary! GOD BLESS YOU BROTHER!!!!!!!!!
Time to dig out Ted Reed's 'Syncopation'. Thanks Ralph!
My respects to Ralph, who has presented himself as being, a very competent and accomplished drummer, over times that I've seen his demonstrations. He does this with relevancy, professionalism and with a sense of history. Thanks Ralph!
That smile while playing towards the end haha killin' it! excellent. Inspirational.
The swing ride pattern is already taking care of the lead half of the para diddle diddle , so to achieve the full paradiddle diddle all he adds is one note (left hand) after the first of the swing ride, then two (left) after the group of two of the swing ride (right hand) R L RR LL
my teacher work with me with that book too.
its great, recomanded !
also great video.
Hey Ralph, glad to see you're still teaching that God given talent of yours... When will you be back in Delaware dude, we miss ur sound...

Mr. Ralph Peterson... The Great One.
The PDF is part of the actual instructional video. Would be on the DVD to download or also part of the online version. Available at our JAZZHEAVEN website (see link in description above).
Wish we could give it all out for free. But then we would not be able to make those videos for you... (Had to rob a few banks to produce these videos ;) - we shot 31 so far, with many different artists, incl. Eric Harland & Ari Hoenig). Best, Falk
Ralph Peterson makes those jazz drums living!
great exercise
Excellent drumming and teaching. Your cousin, my neighbor down the street, introduced me to you. So glad he did. I'm impressed!
the 4th exercise reminds me, referring to the real first part of it, a thing that Elvin used to do a lot!
Nice Post. I have gone over some of this in my videos. He really has a great feel and will be missed.
Excellent
A Bosphorus Oracle, designed by and for Ralph. I am getting into Bosphorus cymbals, and am getting a 21' Master Vintage Ride. Some of the best jazz rides around. Go to Bosphorus' website and listen to ALL of the rides and compare. Great Turkish cymbals
I hope to connect with Jazz Heaven. I love what you are doing my friends.

@ilovemetaalll It's Bosphorus turkish handmade cymbals... most of them looks like Oracle series or maybe New Orleans... Great cymbals (not only for jazz) totally recommend!

At first I was thinking "so what this is easy" then when he started in with the paraddidle-diddle and keeping his ride and high-hat so solid I was like ooooOOOooOOo.

Great stuff!
i love this guy :-))
Just got accepted into Berklee and I find out this guy's on the faculty! I hope I get to study with him while I'm there!
weird brag but okay
@@テイラーサム doesnt take talent to get into berklee
Thanks so much for this!
The starting point for any drummer wanting to play this style of jazz .... the Jim Chapin book Advanced Techniques For The Modern Drummer .... don't let the word "advanced" put you off , it breaks down exactly how to play any figure against the jazz ride cymbal pattern, you'll get all the syncopation you ever need and more just from going through this book
awesome!
thanks!! you play bery welll.
i like this guy! awesome video
killer diller GREAT!!!! luv it!
it seems hard but its so simple to play, thanks a lot!
awesome, absolutely awesome, thanks a bunch :D
thanks,,that's comping !! Swings
I guess the pattern would look more something like this. RL RR LL just a swung paradiddlediddle, hope I helped!
Wow that was amazing!
Artist
nice
could you imagine hanging out with him and Purdie?
Great, super! Where is the actual link to the pdf? I can't find it. THank you!
is that a recovery necklace?? hell yeah!!!
Bop Jazz for life !!!
Im confused on how you read the music with the paradiddlediddle. Does he just accent the notes and keep the ghosting snare underneath?
Following this; where does he play the line...
gj Ralph....keep going..what are those cymballs?? first time i see them
Nice
Wow!
would someone please explain what he is doing with the paradiddlediddle and how it relates to the written syncopation exercise. thanks.
The cymbal pattern is R RRR RRR
So, when you want to add the left hand you start inside the rest of your left hand
RllRlRRll
@@magohipnosis Does he play the line in the B.D. while doing the rllrlrrll?
SUPER
Marcellus Wallace?
hahahahahahahha
Does he look like a bitch?
@@ObiEuan What?
jwajjwajwjaj epic
I'm pretty fuckn far from ok!
reaaaally nice stuff :D
Great, but I fail to see the real explanation. I mean, ok, those are terrific exercises, but the question about comping is not answered: how do I choose what to do? Is it a randomish phrasing or does it have any sense and purpose? I understand it's all about listening to the other musicians, but still... The snare hand phrasing is based on what? Thanks. Great video anyway; that paradiddle-diddle one is crazy.
nice comment!...
just kidding great stuff man. you gots the feel.
love it kool my mann!
I am flying you in for private lessons at my mansion. Can you recommend what drums and cymbals I should get? Would it be best to go direct to the factory in Turkey? Would you be willing to come along ? ( on me )
exelente... ;)
🙏
OKaaay!! thanks man :D
