I was there in 1999 and it was harder to spot as there was no parking area or souvenir shop.
Had to park along the road and cross over a fence and make our way through a herd of cows that kept coming up to us.
We weren't sure if we were trespassing or not.
We had the place to ourselves as it was not as well known as it is now. Pre cell phone days.
We climbed on the Cadillacs and took some photos , checked off one of the boxes of Americana and made an entry into my travel diary.
We said goodbye to the cows and left continuing on our trip across America.

This is a great history of the place and the art movemnt. I never knew it moved. Good job! Thanks for posting.

So this is what the Radiator Springs mountain range in the Cars franchise takes it's inspiration from, huh?

Scott. Did you know that Doug Michels was a very influential member of Ant Farm from the beginning to the end. Doug taught for awhile at the COAD and was a good friend of Joe Mashburn’s. Ant Farm had a long association with the College and one of it’s members, Richard Jost who was part of the House of the Century team, also taught a course in the 70s that I took in my second year.

Hey Duke! I did, I didn't know you had taken a class with him. I knew of Ant Farm from Mashburn's lecture on House of the Century (which I'm still trying to find a legal way to tour!)
