    One year I said screw saving my habanero seeds. I dehydrated the seeds and all. I wanted to see if they were cooked to death so I planted about 10 random seeds. 9 out of 10 grew!

    Highest average culinary powder I could find was $40USD for 0.7oz. This comes out to only a bit over $2k per kg for seedless powder. For the work involved and possible losses, risks, investment.....not high enough a profit to be sustainable- even on a "boutique" scale in my opinion.

    • @TheCovenant2
      @TheCovenant2 2 роки тому +8

      those that pay those high prices arent folks that buy powder xD its fine dining restaurants.. especially with multiple restaurants, that buy these.. and like with peppercorns and stuff - DO NOT BUY POWDER :D
      Those high class buyers pay prices like that for whole, dried fruits with stems on, because if you remove the stem or even make a powder out of it (if not instantly used) will cause the aromatics to go bye-bye. Which ultimately makes it useless. its like those "smoked paprika" powders.. they basically taste like dust and maybe add some spice to it, but you wont taste a difference really and still paid for that sh*t xD

    I'm just curious, though. The total weight of seedless powder is one thing but selling the seeds is another. Just say that on average you get 10 seeds per pepper. That's 11,340 seeds that most companies are asking $4 for 10 seeds(your company). That's $4536, right? Now you said that you'd need 28 plants, right? That $4536 is for one plant. Now times 28 = $127,008. Now this is the sale of the seeds only for 28 plants to get 1 kilo of pepper dust. That is a lot of money, brother. Just another way to look at it. Not expensive for you, and it isn't for me to buy 10 seeds. It does add up to one profitable plant. $4536 per plant to be exact. Really good video! I liked it.

      @smallislandgardener  Рік тому +1

      hah, you found me out 😅. yes, seeds are valuable, and I take full advantage of that fact. however, this varieties seed price is similar to other varieties and species, so it's not an indicator of charapita peppers selling for high prices.

  • @TheCovenant2
    @TheCovenant2 2 роки тому +2

    The thing with it being that expensive is basically just the Area - not many really grow them here overseas, just about a few, where only one or two are big enough to sell them in high counts - this, the temperature/weather sensibility in most other places + the work connected to it (hand-harvest) all adds up to it. It is still considered the most expensive chili in the world, yet ofcourse it is not in every part of the world.. its like with safran, people in areas where its grown.. they use that for every damn dish.. whilst in other parts of the world 0,1g costs about $2 or whatever :D
    Here in Germany/Middle Europe its pretty hard to find those in high quality and quantity for commercial use (like fine dining and all that stuff etc) so ofcourse those who grow them in quantities make the price :D
    (Just made it to the end of the video: Yes, there are some people here that actually sold them for this high of a price, it probably went down a bit now, was a few years back.. but they still make a living out of it xD As mentioned, it all depends on the area you grow and sell it in :D and ofcourse the quality... as mentioned in the following section: S-Tier fruits, dried whole with stem on :D)
    Also, please do not remove the stem before drying x.x thats one of the essentials - those customers like fine dining etc actually dont take them without the stem on anymore, because the stem is keeping the flavor inside.. its like with peppercorns.. if you break them they lose their aromatics straight away :D
    (And ofcourse powder is way cheaper cause of the reason I just mentioned, everyone that wants the taste to be there, doesn't buy powder)

    21:18 you don't even have specialized equipment to grow and process it. A lot of the more serious commercial growers will have machines that can sow 100+ seeds per minute, maybe have machines for planting the seedlings into the ground, and I'm sure there are machines to de-stem and de-seed the fruits too. I highly doubt the paprika powder you can buy for $3 at the grocery store is processed by hand, and I'm sure similar processing equipment could be used for these differently shaped peppers.

    Question: Does just letting the peppers dry (without a dehydrator) also cause the germination rate to decrease?
    You are making a point about how to, and NOT to, save seeds for a good germination rate, but I am not sure I am drawing the correct conclusion from your extensive seed saving experience.
    Do you get the best germination rate by harvesting the seeds before the peppers have dried at all (or is it "higher" heat, like 120F/49C, from overnight dehydration, that degrades the seeds)?

    • @smallislandgardener

    I really like this video and thank you for your efforts. However, I have one wish that I hope you will grant, next time weigh the fruit both with and without the stems before you process them.

    They usually carefully pick only the totally ripe ones. Dry it with stems on, for about 2weeks, then cure it for about 7-8weeks.😅

    It’s said you must live in the right market for this price or any high price - 4 Star Michelin chefs/ restaurants are said to seek out these peppers for specialty dishes. Not sure if there is truth beyond that.

    You have now explained that it is not worth $ 25,000 / kg, but you have not confirmed the statement "is NOT The Worlds Most Expensive Pepper"! your headline and the video therefore don't quite match. even if the kg is only worth $ 5000 it can still be the most expensive! which one is more expensive?

    • @smallislandgardener
      @smallislandgardener  2 роки тому +3

      I understand what you're saying. this video was made to show how easy it is to process the pods. Basic economics proves that 4 1/2 days worth of easy labour isn't going to earn someone $25k. Chiltepins are harder to pick, and they also fall off the plant when ripe, so they should technically be worth more than Charapita. I grow Capsicum Flexuosum, and these fruits are extremely rare, and take a few years to finally produce a large enough crop. If you could even find flexuosum powder, you're looking at an insanely high price due to it's true rarity, value of seeds, and years of care that go into these plants. Also, CGN 24360 makes tastier fruits (IMO), and they're 1/4 the size of Charapita. It takes longer to gather and process these fruits, so the labour cost would be much higher. Although these are just a few examples, it's clear that Aji Charapita is not the rarest, smallest, or tastiest pepper. The price couldn't be more than above average.
