  • Stunning Beauty - Daly Mansion - Long Version - Hamilton, Montana MT
Located on 46 acres of lush landscape, the Daly Mansion was the summer home of 19th Century American industrialist Marcus Daly. The mansion is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Marcus Daly was a copper magnate from Butte, Montana. He built a smelter in Anaconda, MT. and purchased 28,000 acres of land in the Bitterroot Valley for his summer home "Riverside".
A farmhouse was remodeled by 1889 and remodeled again in 1897 to a Queen Anne-style Victorian home. The home reminded Marcus of a church, so remodeling plans were once again drawn up.
Marcus died in 1900 and his wife, Margaret, asked Missoula architect A.J. Gibson to start the remodel in the Georgian Revival style. The summer home was completed in 1910.
Margaret Daly spent summers in the home until her death in 1941. The home sat vacant for the next 40 years and much of the deterioration happened during this time. In 1986 the Daly Mansion Preservation Trust was created by a band of courageous citizens determined to save history. The structure has been stabilized and preserved for future generations.
The governor's mansion in the final episode of "Yellowstone" season five was shot here.
A dedicated staff and volunteers oversee the daily operation of the Daly Mansion and its professionally landscaped grounds. For more information about the mansion and the Daly Mansion Preservation Trust please visit www.dalymansion.org.

Hi David... another great one! Love the different shooting styles on this one.... I bet the owners are very happy to have the grounds documented in your style. :-)

Dan, thank you for commenting. This was a fun project for me. The director and staff of the Daly Mansion were very accommodating, including authorizing the use of aerial video with my small drone. I am trying to incorporate as many techniques possible in my videos to keep a fresh perspective. I have been flying radio-control airplanes since 1986 so drone video fits right in to my style. One can't have too many hobbies! Thanks again! Dave in Montana.

I've taken tours of this mansion twice when it was being renovated after not being lived in since Margaret died there one summer. The wallpaper in the bedrooms and the curtains matched. There were fireplaces in every bedroom that were never used since it was the summer home for the family and the weather was not conducive to heat in the summer.. Each bedroom shared a bathroom with another bedroom. The kitchen had these interlocking rubber tiles that fit together very tightly like a jigsaw puzzle. A huge walk in freezer. I wonder what it looks like inside after being renovated for over 20 years.

I know the contractor who worked on this project. They went through great pains to restore back to original. They even used closet space to install an elevator to make the tour ADA accessible. Inside photography is prohibited but another tour would be worthwhile. Thanks for watching and commenting. Dave.

Am I right in saying Marcus Daly was a Copper Miner and there were battles between other copper miners in Montana in the 19th century?

Caroline, thanks for commenting on my video. You are correct, Daly WAS one of the Copper Kings of Montana, based out of Butte and Anaconda. This was his home, away from all the smoke that was produced by his polluting smelters. The story of Montana's Copper Kings is interesting, one that shaped much of Montana. Thanks for watching and asking! Dave in Missoula.

Dave, once again you've put together an entertaining program. In several of your last posts there were aerial shots and I just assumed you were a pilot or had a buddy that flew. I never knew that a civilian drone was capable of such spectacular shots. Would you please share the make/model and approximate cost. Thank you and happy travels.
    Pete

Pete, thanks for the positive feedback. I appreciate it. I am using a DJI Phantom V1.1 quad copter (aka drone, aka UAV, aka 4 propeller helicopter) with a GoPro Hero3 Black camera sitting in a gimbal under the quad to help stabilize the image. I also use a video down-link from the craft to a 7" video screen to help me align and compose my aerial shots. Since I am using HAM radio frequencies for the video transmission I needed to pass the HAM Technician Class test to be legal in the US. I would assume I have around $2,000 invested for my aerial shots. Smooth flying, a few special camera settings and editing techniques also helps with the steadiness of the video. You can see the Phantom in action taking off and landing starting at 40:33 on ua-cam.com/video/e80JcnvBXzc/v-deo.html since I did a selfie with my Canon camera! Pete, if you want more info, just ask. Aerial video is a blast, especially intermixing with ground-based video. Thanks again for watching and asking. Dave in Montana.

davidegg22 Thank you very much, Dave. I feel a little humbled that you did mention using a drone in past videos. I guess I was having so much fun watching that I did not absorb all the details. My ham ticket, KD4ELT lapsed due to lack of use (too many hobbies) but I should be able to pass the test again. Also your 2K estimate is waaaaay below the 5K drone/camera advertised on the youtube page with your current video. Thanks so much for sharing and encouraging others to get involved. I'll start my learning curve asap. Pete

I think the video would be well served by a voice over. It needs time, place, history and info on occupants. Otherwise, it could be anywhere..

Lee, thanks for watching and commenting. Most of my videos do not include narration (voice over) since detailed information is always available for those who are interested either online or included in my description of my video. In case you missed my description of this video:
