My great grandfather was an engineer from 1920ish until 1950ish. He never operated a Diesel engine. He worked out of Portland Or. I wish he were around to tell me about it.... thanks for posting the video!
This railway engine has a lot of good memories of my childhood with my late father. I miss my great Father when I see this beautiful railway engine. ❤❤
They certainly seemed to be putting out more smoke than usual on this run. Another amazing video Skip! And I love that closeup pacing done in the beginning!
That last shot really showcased the loco. Thanks for sharing. I cannot figure whether it would have been more fun to be with you watching her or riding in one of the cars.
Driving her would be the best place to be. Four generations of my family worked on the L&N. Wish my father had gone in that direction, I might have been an Engineer.
Really... Also back then in 1944...? How did they run their trains crosscountry in the old days without squadrons of diesel helpers...? Never saw any of them on O. Winston Link's legendary N&W footage. Todays "historic" rides of great vintage steamers are mostly ridiculous...
@@Dokker62 The diesel is actually there mostly for its onboard computer systems. I don't remember the exact name, but modern diesels are connected to a network so rail traffic control can moniter the train's location, notify other trains about said position, and automate nearby switches to keep the train on route. It's easier to just slap a diesel on the consist, rather than trying to fit the whole computing and power systems onto a steamer.
@@redman7775 Sounds like all of these functions could be provided by a laptop or similar mobile device as in the majority its about software and connectivity. In Germany small cargo companies operating older diesel units not being equipped with latest technology do it exactly that way. In contrast historic rides with steamers nowadays also often run additional engines just to provide electric power as modern cars used for these 'authentic' rolling stocks do not match the leading old lady.
Professional observation is her fire is a hair dirty on the opening to middle (before her rebuilding) & she isn't being unbridled to her capabilities; all else aside she is being well handled by her crew
+TestECull And that's not a small tank either. I wonder why it was the only military vehicle on the entire train though. I didn't even look like they were transporting any other military equipment, except for fuel maybe.
Love all the smoke she’s putting out! I have been looking for HO scale model of her for years! But unfortunately so far I have not found a model that is reasonable in price
Awesome! Gotta Love a good old steam engine! I remember one day several years ago, probably my first close up encounter with it. We stood about 2 or 4 feet from the track. All the sudden they let out a ton of steam from the engine right next me and everyone else. We all were enveloped in it for a few seconds. Being just a child I was quite giddy with excitement after that! Do you ever come to Cheyenne? That's where I live, less then a mile from the tracks, Train depot and roundhouse. I hear it every time it's out! Where do you live?
Listening to this big ole varmint as it winds on the mainline makes me want to scream and pull my hair! Holy Democracy, listen to that: Diesels are the workhorses, sure, but the sound and fury of a big hog getting out of town in a hurry makes me want a Brass Band, with Astronauts, pretty girls, and ice cream! GO, BABY, GO...
Early in the vid when 844 is passing the freight the diesel is emitting exhaust as if its "giving a hand" there's one thing for sure it doesn't look like its idling!!!!!
Sometimes whistles get worn, or they change them for special occasions. Changing whistles had been huge since the Railtour era of the 1970s and beyond.
If the whistle is worn could the re-machine one? And is it possible that they changed it because it is its first run in 2016 or they just decided to change it because they could?.

I love the beginning when it's just getting under way. What a beast.

Man, the 844 is just fascinating to see...
I would LOVE to see this beast up close!
you now that Nebraska 66 have a song commemorating "the Living Legend"?
Faster than an EMD, more powerful than a GE ever thought of being, able to pull freight or passenger trains, it's UP 844.
And more soul than both...
Now instead of 844 it’s 4014
@azaabazha you sure? I thought it went 10000mph!
(Joke)
@azaabazha big boys had a max speed of 80mph. It just never happened in operations
But let’s not forget the GTELs. Those had insane power
They certainly seemed to be putting out more smoke than usual on this run. Another amazing video Skip! And I love that closeup pacing done in the beginning!
Patrick3751 Her drivers have been known to put on a show for people.
Maybe they were sanding the flues.
How cool it must have been being that freight train’s engineer and seeing 844 pass you close up. Would have made my day for sure.
Love that little cymbal sound you hear every few seconds as it hits the next laid section of rail.

ncplantdoctor riding up front is where the thrill of it would be. A man could die happy having been able to do that.
For anyone who wonders.
The diesel loco behind 844 is there to provide electrical and compressed air backup for the cars, and dynamic braking.

No electric for cars that be the generator car in the consist.

So weird seeing 844 without 6936 behind her. Those two are always a team.
That was truly awesome and the engine sounds so good.
UP844, UP4014, these magnificent machines deserve to be famous and respected in the USA!
I miss the Mars Light. I hope it makes an appearance again!
Watch those drive rods, as they gracefully move up and down!
Watching Rods and wheels moving, that's how you know a locomotive is working right
Great job and loved the nice drive-a-long with it!

3:50 or so: HAH, that's an M1 Abrams on that flatcar far line. Gives you an idea of just how fucking enormous these things are.
+TestECull And that's not a small tank either. I wonder why it was the only military vehicle on the entire train though. I didn't even look like they were transporting any other military equipment, except for fuel maybe.
Lmao just casually an m1 abrams
Beautiful background with a beautiful locomotive makes a great shot
Old Union Pacific 844" What a Beauty! Loved It. Thanks!
Love to hear classic steam sweet sound of this steam beauty who can touch top speed of 75 mph
With 80 inch drivers, she should be able to do much better than 75mph.
@@viktordubowskii695 yes surely this steam beauty can achieve this target
Back in the day, these locomotives reached up to 110 mph
Excellent video and audio well done
another great video from Skip.
only one word to describe this video and its awesome
0:02 the beast lets out its roar
Love all the smoke she’s putting out! I have been looking for HO scale model of her for years! But unfortunately so far I have not found a model that is reasonable in price
SkipW should get a big bus and give Steam Rail tours in the summertime.

Beautiful machine
Seeing up 844 chuff is rare to me
0:00 Conductor to UP 844, all aboard. Highball!!!
That fireman could be doing a better job. There should not be that much black smoke.
....fantastic machine....👍👍
I love trains thanks
👍Great video! Thank you.
2:56 Pure Gold.

Tank at 3:57. You're welcome. :)
***** Try replaying it at 3:57 a couple of times. You'll see it!
I think the speed has been altered!
it was wonderful.

Question, do steam trains have different gears? Like a car transmission?
biscuitninja No, they do not have gear they do have forward and reverse which requires changing the position of the reverser
Was this this year and UP was taking it for a test run or is this 2013 when it last ran and the video was just not posted?
How does one become a train driver? Is it hard work?
844 gots UP challenger 3985 whistle
I have the golden spike of Union Pacific no 844
Say What?
How many kilomerter per hour
Ve always wondered....what is the diesel for?
Probably there to help, so as not to overstress the old steamer. And also to provide dynamic braking when they need to stop.
Beautiful! Is the whistle from 3985?
It could be, she wore it in 2011 I know, before she wore the UP 40xx whistle.
+Jacob Woods I believe you're correct. It was replaced after 2010.
+Jacob Woods Why would UP replace the whistle that it had before?

It started putting me to sleep. Mechanical music.
Why are there two exhausts?
That's how they're built all of union Pacific steam locomotive are double stack
What is a "Highball"??
It's what you say when a train is going really fast. "The 4449 is high-balling ahead!"
Why is there always a Diesel engine in tow?
for the electronics in the passenger cars, as well as dynamic braking.
When was this

Why is 844 smoking so much? That's not normal for this engine.
That's normal it's a oil burning steam locomotive they can switch from white to oil smoke
