Very enjoyable sight seeing the two main Union Pacific rr steam star attraction locomotives (at the time) in operation with one another, the 8444 and 3985 both looked fantastic during their railfair journey.
This was one of the first train videos I ever owned (and I've accumulated quite a library). This was actually my first exposure to engine 8444, as I was already familiar with Challenger 3985. So it holds a special place in my heart. Two things that I did when I watched this were: one, I kept mispronouncing Cheyenne as "Shy-anna", and two: I thought 8444 was a Challenger, too; didn't think to check the wheels back then.

@Minecraft World 844 was numbered to 8444 because a diesel locomotive gp-30 took her number around the 90's the diesel locomotive retired and 8444 was renumbered back to 844
@@Droopy__ It was called a GP30 and actually the gp30 that took away 844's number until 1989 is still around today. Gp30 number 844 now runs on a small railroad in Nevada.
The 844 gained the extra 4 back in the 60's when the 800 series GP30's came into the picture, and it was still in it's black livery at that time. The Greyhound scheme was a mid to late 80's thing that was then reversed at some point in the 90's.
844 was the locomotive's original number. But in 1962, the union pacific ordered a batch of diesels called gp30's and were numbered the in the 800 class. One of them was numbered 844, so to avoid complications the U.P. renumbered the steam engine from 844 to 8444 and it stuck with this number until 1989 when the gp30's were retired including gp30 844. Now that there wasn't another engine that was numbered 844 it allowed the locomotive to have it's number back. It's kept its number 844 since then.
This video proves that why I think they are using the 844 old whistle on the 4014 because the 844 uses a big boy whistle that they replaced her old one in council bluffs in 2011 I think and plus this video with the 8444 sounds like the 4014 whistle today
I saw these two locomotives in 1981 and seeing them in this video makes me weep. They are so beautiful, just absolute poetry in motion.

Up 8444 & 3985 goes to Califórnia state railroad museum
7:34 Is there any Railroad crossings?
No, I suppose they knew lots of foamers/news stations were probably filming them so I guess they wanted to put on a show or something like that
if you play it at 2x the sound is awesome
Up 3985 está soprando o apito antigo igual a voz da tia Marilene

Ignoring the spam, I’m gonna say that this video is definitely a rare treasure find.
wait before it got changed numbers it was in black? I always thought they changed the number then repainted it black..

@@ottomatic6432 a lot of things happened on 1989, my god
How do you keep the throttles synced on those trains?
Not sure
Skill on the part of the drivers/engineers.
THE Galaxy Railways 2
What year was this? I have never seen footage or pictures of just SP diesels behind the 844 and 3985.
Hi Thanks for watching. If I am not mistaken, this was 1981 - 1984 time frame. Frank
WhistleStopUSA Oh ok. Thanks. I was under the impression that SP never let UP run their steam engines over the rails prior to he merger.
This was 1981 when they ran to Sacramento for Railfair 81. This was also 3985's first major outing after being restored as well!
***** And of course, the 3985 was coal fired at the time.
they renumbered the fef-3, its back to 844 again, the gp30 was retired
This must have been filmed prior to the 3985's conversion to being oil fired. There are coal hoppers in the consist.
+sclm046 This run was made in 81. 3985 wasn't converted to oil until 90.
Not sure which is the better scent coal or oil
They are about the same
how come they don't have that many passenger cars
This video proves that why I think they are using the 844 old whistle on the 4014 because the 844 uses a big boy whistle that they replaced her old one in council bluffs in 2011 I think and plus this video with the 8444 sounds like the 4014 whistle today
Bet those fans on the bridge had a good snort of exhast
I would love to see these two at the head of a freight train.
Did anyone noticed that the 3985 is coal fired in this video :-)
I did.
+animal16365 This was 3985's first major run. They got it running just one month before.
Yes, it was a coal burner until 1990 when it was converted to burn oil.
NEVER GiVE UP
Hm
why do they smoke so much? here in germany theyre more clean
The smoke is mostly for show
Ummm, 8444? I thought it was 844. WTF?
844 wore the number 8444 from 1962-1989, since the UP had a diesel numbered 844, and it avoided confusion, until the diesel was retired.
