This is second episode of "Anime Campaign", the TTRPG series that "Epithet Erased" is very loosely based on.
Originally streamed on Twitch.tv/SurpriseRoundRPG about 7-8 years ago, "Anime Campaign" was a series of loosely-connected episodic adventures with rotating party members and players. Each episode is loosely based on a different genre. I think this episode "Monkey Toy Audience", is loosely supposed to be "the baseball episode"? This stream (along with elements of later episodes) was eventually adapted into "Prison of Plastic".

For example, EP2 is currently being cut down and edited because that was the source material for "Epithet Erased: Prison of Plastic". It should be up within the month.
This series was taken offline to prevent new fans from spoiling themselves on future installments of Epithet Erased. In particular, Episode 4 contains massive spoilers that will severely impact the reader's enjoyment of later "Epithet" books where the focus of the book IS the spoiler in question.

I love how Giovanni went from “gross and annoying” to the players to one of the most beloved characters in Epithet Erased to the viewers.

Actually Giovanni was always a fan favorite from Anime Campaign. We all loved him and thought he was the funniest ever. I honestly prefer Anime Campaign version as Roob (the person who plays him) is really really funny

Ah, reminds me of my first campaign. The table we used got us a modern day car in Curse of Strahd. We used it the whole campaign because one of the other PCs had vehicle proficiency.

Good to see this again. Little sad the Agatha and quinton didn’t get even a tiny mention in Prison of Plastic. Unless Agatha was the mean teacher to made Molly cry. Which is actually quite possible now that I think about it.

Prison of Plastic is a much better story and honestly has better comedy too, but I really prefer how Milly's epithet was done here. Taking the toy store and expanding it feels a lot more like augmenting it, rather than creating an entirely new, independent world. I feel like "dream" might be a better epithet to describe Lorelei's powers? idk I'm not the author. In any case, this was a blast! My favorite moment was the Giovanni-Sylvie exchange "In YOUR match you just cuddled with sheep for 20 minutes!" "Yeah. And I still won." I don't remember the timestamp so that might be misquoted, but still, it's so funny hearing out-of-context things about episode 0 lol
Yeah Lori's powers in PoP felt a bit confusing that way. Because I was waiting for a real life anchor to some connections of the bubbles. For example Lori's sword being a wooden one augmented because of the AoE area she's made. However, my interpretation of it is being a more mental augmentation of it. I'm not going to say how in great detail (cause who spoils a book?) but things such as Molly being able to connect areas to TV shows and how Lorelai seems to deal with Molly is more of a mental augmentation rather than psychical one to one.

I think Lori’s epithet powerset is meant to be more “augmented reality” esque, where the thing being augmented is physics and the fabric of the universe

That fun fact in the beginning is true, as not even Sylvie gets a name-drop. While the business card he gives Molly is mentioned, it’s only described as “professional-looking,” and a name is never mentioned.
It's all-but-outright-stated that the kid buying a pack of cards at the start of Chapter 2 is Sylvie, though. They even used his VA in the audiobook.

I'm pretty sure if the kid was supposed to be Sylvie, it would have been WAY more obvious. Far as we know, he was just some kid who wanted a pack of Horizontal Pilot Command cards. The book doesn't really do anything else to make us think otherwise.
No. It’s Sylvie. He mentioned that he was there to see his friend (Molly) and even if the voice actor was reused, voice actors can do different voices and would not have just done Sylvie again for someone who isn’t sylvie.
@@dragon1130 no, it's pretty clear it's sylvie. it's said in the narration as hes leaving that he was 'actually there to visit a friend who worked there' (paraphrasing, it's something like that) and that this friend wasn't in the store at the time.
yeah it's never explicitly stated, but it'd be very weird if this character didn't turn out to be him. the fact that shares the same va as sylvie AND is explicitly stated to want to have visited a friend who works at the toy store makes it pretty obvious. could you make the argument that comment wasnt about molly? technically, but that's grasping at straws for no reason.

Gotta say, just within these first 20 minutes, I'm already in love with Quinton. He's absolutely chaotic.

There was no Agatha so they didn’t feel the need to bring sylvie in until the twi- I mean his fans screamed loud enough
@@harrisono.324 This makes me wish someone would write a version of Prison of Plastic, where the neo-trio doesn't find Rick, and thus get to their class on time. That way, when Sylvie came in for the cards he'd get roped into the story.
When you think about it, Anime Campaign Giovanni is extremely tragic in a way he refuses to acknowledge because his mom says, "No one likes you" (implying she doesn't even like him let alone love), then his worst nightmare is his mother loving him and doing it in the worst way (like a monkey palm wish to be loved by his mom), so he gives himself the most hype imaginable (possibly to be admired/love (probably feels like it's the same)), I'm sad the players didn't take Milly loving Giovanni as the biggest win of his existence and just fully accepting boufriend-husband and later realizing that means fiancee

This is legitimately a fascinating thing to watch from an artistic standpoint-
Like, legit, the GM notes were probably my favorite bit of this (aside from the description of the toy store expanding, because that was cool and I slightly miss the connection to the adventure being in an augmented toy store in the book despite it being a much better story/drama).

Agitha Fuckwhistle's rant at the beginning is the thing that hooked me to Anime Campaign and made me follow through with the whole thing. It is really funny but it's not even the funniest moment in the series.
I think the big issue with Anime Campaign Sylvie is that he only considers what happens in the sessions themselves and not anything else. Like, his sole motivation is Mera and the necklace and nothing else. Said obsession is so absolute that it actively hurts the party in AC Part 4, where he uses up precious investigation time on interaction with characters that have _nothing_ to do with the mystery. He thinks that some guy Giovanni fought in Part 0 would be his greatest fear. He considers a guy in Part 0 that he just met in said part to be his best friend (which isn’t, by itself, bad, but it’s worsened by the other stuff he does).
That’s probably why I’m excited to see Epithet Erased Sylvie. I _liked_ Sylvie and I _want_ to like Sylvie. And from what I’ve seen of him so far from the Museum Arc (and his little cameo in Prison of Plastic), he’s gonna _be_ better. Maybe even be apart of the final party in the final part in the final final?
They’re knoledge that Agatha may still be Molly’s teacher in epithet is horrifying, also jello keeps trying to tell me these are awful and I am having a very fun time
I think it’s a situation where the artist views their older work as embarrassing or not fit for their current quality standards.
Also Jello doesn’t really like plot points being spoiled due to watching AC. So I think a part of this is just to dissuade people from spoiling themselves.
I think the reason jello can’t enjoy these is partially because he’s thinking about the player experience more than the viewer experience and I can only imagine that the players had a god awful time with this one, especially plaster and Chris who are brand new

I didn't realize how much I missed Agatha Fuckwhistle, I understand why she was cut but I really hope she at least gets mentioned in a future book.
I remember watching this episode of anime campaign live. I was in a really bad mental place and this (along with other Surprise Round campaigns) were some of the only times I was laughing back then. Anime campaign is definitely not as polished on revisit, but it sparked my love for TTRPGs and meant so much to me during a really hard time, so I’m delighted to get to watch them again.
Man the tip of letting a player have fun when the dice hate them hits to hard. Had an entire season of rolling under 5 the dm gave me his dice and I cursed it. The same dice rolled 3 nat ones for him then gave me back his dice

Absolutely wrecked because I wished the chemistry between the siblings was there in the audio book. They fought like siblings and cared for each other so much. God the chemistry between the characters in the campaign is done sooo well, I adore it so much. Milly and Giovanni was something I didn't even know I needed, but now I do so desperately.

While I totally understand what you mean when you talk about the quality of these streams, I'm still happy I'm able to experience them now. Also I really like the GM/player notes you put in here. Some of these are obvious when you have played a bit of ttrpgs, but others are really helpful. Also you were right about Molly being different. God damn she tried to kill ever viewer right at the start of the session!

Had literally jusg finished the phenomenal audio book with a friend. As someonr who literally grew up with the anime campaign streams, while my friend was starting with epithet, it was super interesting and fun

Honestly, as good as I thought Prison of Plastic was, I think this adventure might be a bit more fun, mostly due to Quinton and the NPCs like the Octoclackers. I know Prison of Plastic could not have been this and still also accomplished its grander role in the Epithet Erased narrative, but I hope Quinton and his antics can be worked into a future book somehow.

man it is so cathartic reading all the tooltips on the boss fights, these first 3 episodes had the most painful combat in the series and i ended up skipping most of them on my first watch.

As I quote anime fans would say its always fun to read the manga that inspired the anime and improvements the anime brought to the manga
Honestly, Prison of Plastic deviates from Monkey Toy Audience _so_ much that it's not even a superior version, it's just a completely separate story which was thematically inspired by the source material. The former is still definitely the better story, but unlike Redwood Run, there's WAY more value in experiencing both this time around.

Oh wow I just noticed something, now that I've finally seen some of the streams, the art that listed the stretch goals on the prison of plastic kickstarter feature a bunch of the anime campaign exclusive characters (ex. poppet with the animated ova or Ducky Malone with the hardcover prints goal). Thats so fun!
This is why I want the original role placed off to be released from the 1st epitaph erased live streams of the role playing sessions. This stuff was comedy golden I want that stuff back as well
I do hope Miss Fuckwhistle is in Epithet Erased, but unfortunately I highly doubt it.
They would have to rename her since the F word is too much for the level of maturity set up by the first seven episodes.
@@tyrelljones8509 yeahh...despite certain characters saying sh!t a few times in Prison of Plastic (several times at once even) the other four letter swear just seems a bit to extreme...especially as a name.
Though you could modify the name to make it more suitable. PoundFlute, ScrewHorn, or even FornicationOcerina could be suitable replacements.

Short answer: it was supposed to be funny. That's why you found it funny
Long version that explains the joke, thus "ruining" it:
FornicationOcerina consists of two fairly long words that are both four syllables long. The longer the words the funnier they are. Especially when combined.
Fornication is also too on the nose for a replacement to the word f#ck. Pound, screw, and even slam are perfect substitutes because they have multiple meanings (much like the root word itself actually). You can't say "go fornicate yourself" and expect it to have the same power as "go screw yourself" "go f#ck yourself", or even "go pound yourself".
There's also the rule of 3, where the third thing in a list is funny because of how different or extreme it is to the other two items on a list. But that's more of a comedy guideline and not the reason it's funny. It also makes this explanation list a tad bit funnier.

Anime Campaign and Epithet Erased have quickly become my favorite series and TTRPG and I can’t wait for the rest of them to be released with the rest of Epithet Erased.
The tool tips and Patreon audio (for only $5 go support jello) are both really helpful for any system. I love playing in the AC system and can’t wait to try these tips soon!

It's a good tip in most situations but this campaign was filled to the brim with long silences and anything filling that air is a good thing, especially since npcs initiating conversation can encourage other people to participate, like how lenny joins in here
It's filled to the brim with long silences because Roob and I initiate almost every conversation and the players can't tell if they're allowed to interact or if it's a cutscene. Because the NPCs are talking too much.

These are so amazing and charming! I really love all the characters here! Honestly, Lenny, Agitha, and Quinton share the top spot in my list of favorites (For Anime Campaign)

the book is overall better, but i think that anime campaign has enough differences where i don't think watching it would completely ruin the emotional impact of the book. personally i would still recommend waiting on watching this until youve read prison of plastic though.
Having watched this stream 3+ times and read Prison of Plastic twice so far, yeah, you're not going to spoil anything big by watching this one. The main set-pieces, most of the cast, and just about everything at the end of this stream is different than Prison of Plastic. The NEXT TWO are the ones you want to look out with, because THOSE will have _serious_ spoilers for the books at the end. No pressure to watch this video before you get around to the book, but if spoilers are the _only_ thing keeping you from this, you're definitely in the clear this time around. ;)
I don’t know your situation but if your family has the money ask if you can do jobs in exchange for them buying the book. Eg mow the lawn or cook dinner
Spoilers. Their aren't any real spoilers. Two of the main characters arent here. In my opinion phonecia acts completely diffrent in prison of plastics. Navien has a more minor role. And the story is much more focused on the two sisters relationship.
Not even the battles in this are the same. So like your fine, your not really spoiling this for yourself.

Y'know, I've wondered what the relationship between Jello and Plaster have been since I realized how similar their avatars were. Its pretty wholesome to have them work together on Epithet Erased and do cross promotion.
Anywho, fun as this is, I'll have to save the next episode for after the next book comes out. Thank you for reediting and reuploading these! Especialy with the tool tips. Even as an experienced GM there were some stuff I never considered thay came up here, and I'm sure my group will enjoy seeing how I experiment with the lessons learned.

I don’t really get what’s so embarrassing or disappointing about these old streams. To me, they just look like good fun between good friends. Kinda wish I could do this with a group of friends and hopefully I can when the Epithet Erased ttrpg book releases years from now.

I feel like it's just a symptom of being a creative, a lot of times when you look at your past work you can only see the flaws, even if they aren't actually as noticeable to everyone else as they are to you.

Request-could you put Quinton into epithet erased and have him go off and do his own thing, and update us on what he has been doing for the past chapters every 3-5 chapters, and at the end have him one shot the main antagonist with his epithet, only to use it again and revive them, before taking off
