Would you guys care to do a video on how to make an opening offer on a CPO car ?
I bought a CPO in 2014 and two weeks before the extended warranty ran out (four years later), the engine blew up, the dealer had trouble fixing it, and at my urging the manufacturer bought the car back for my original purchase price, despite the 70K miles on the car at that time. Best deal I ever made.

Strange I just bought a 2019 Honda Accord Touring 2.0L CPO, and I ended up getting the the Honda Certified+ which gives me 24 months bumper to bumper or 50,000 miles and 100k power train or 7 years. But my 24 months honda certified doesn't start till after my original warranty finishes so essentially I'm covered for 86,000 first or 2024, regarding bumper to bumper.

17 minutes to answer the question if you should buy CPO (certified pre-owned)? Here's the answer in a few sentences:
#1 The only advantage to CPO cars is they come with a manufacturer backed warranty, usually on just the powertrain components, but you pay for this warranty, it's built into the price. #2 You still have to take a CPO car to your local, trusted, PROFESSIONAL mechanic to take a look at it before you buy it if you don't know what you're doing. It may have been in an accident and cleaned up and painted. Dealers will certify ANYTHING. Repeat after me.... *DEALERS WILL CERTIFY ANYTHING!*

Just like car fax isn’t always accurate either. A leased car is in an accident, no police report, no insurance call, but fixed privately at owners expense. At lease end car is turned in and dealer claims a clean car fax report, on the used car lot it goes until sold to some unlucky chump! Me. True story!
I rather trust the CPO from a well known and highly regarded dealership with online testimonials.
Private sales are price negotiable and that’s it, so you get what you pay for. Good luck 60-75K miles later, if a major part fails.
Lexus would have the high reliability built in, they go over 200K easy.

I’ve did a 250 mile search and found about 15
When I found a 2015 non (CPO) with around 60k miles that was priced the lowest out of around 50 that I looked at on line...
I email all the sales managers of the 15 (CPO) Honda Accord’s
and said that I was buying that one a few days from now and will they sell me there 2015 Accord at that price ?
    If so I’ll buy it
I had a few emailed me back and said yes
So I bought a 2015 Honda Accord certified at the same price of the lowest non certified price..

Hey Greg- im not saying you're lying but a few things don't add up:
1- most CPO programs are only on 2-3 yr old cars
2- No manufacturer will certified a car with over 30-45k miles..based on avg. 12-15k miles per yr. Also, most CPO cars are lease returns.
Maybe you bought a "certifed" extended warranty Honda..?...which do cost a few K more then a non-extended warranty preowned car.
My brother bought a used Audi (w/62k miles) a few yrs ago the was "certified" to 100k miles, but was NOT a manufacturer CPO.

About the post saying that I was lying...
      Why would i be lying
I have no reason to be...
      Anyway,
All anybody has to do is check what Honda’s CPO is....
It’s 5 years and don’t remember exactly the miles limit
But my was like 64-67,000 k
Just do your research before making a statement that’s not true....
I’m sure Toyota and others are similar in nature...
But I have bought a few cars that way....
Using 3-4 of the online buying cars places and doing a 200 mile search and writing down the best miles and prices and then calling the used car mgr and seeing if I can get cheaper
Then either email the use car mgr or calling them telling him that I’m buying that model with very similar specs and I can get it for $$
But I’m looking at the cheaper and if you can come down to ???
( usually just a few hundred)
Note : cause you already found the cheapest doing your 200-250 mile search
With the 2015 Honda Accord I just bought a few months ago
The used car mgr I talked to said they’ll call me back shortly and got a CPO 2015 with similar miles (64k ?)
      and $200 cheaper
      Those are the facts....
      Also,
      Get this .....
      With Honda certified vehicle’s
Honda will finance certified with 1.9 % rate
I have good credit and got 1.9 %
I asked what was the fico score needed and they said about 705 and up....
      Hope this helps someone
      Blessing
      Greg

Lol! I bought a certified used car from a major new/used car dealer, driven by the service manager's wife. The motor was gone. 'Certified' only means the safety and pollution equipment are okay. I am a huge fan of CPO programs. I bought my wife a 2017 MB in Jan 2020. The in service date was August 2017 so the MB warranty is good until August 2022. The car had 24k miles and the dealer had to put 4 new tires, brakes, and rotors in addition to making the car look new. In Mercades cost world could run $4000+. Maybe I paid a $2000 premium. for cpo. However, I got a car that would only cost basic maintenance for 2 1/2 years. Everything else is under warranty. It's like a buying a new car at half price. If the is any problem, they give you a nice loner car and you are on your way.

In 2000, I bought a certified Civic from Hardin Honda in Anaheim California. I soon found out, they had lied about the car history; it had been in an accident. In my opinion, the further away you are from vehicles with a solid record of reliability, the more CPO makes sense. I wouldn't pay extra for CPO on a Lexus/Toyota because it's probably going to run for at least 200,000 miles virtually trouble free assuming preventative maintenance is done in a timely manner and extreme driving conditions are avoided. At the other end of the scale, I would love to own an Alfa Romeo, but I would never own one that wasn't under a great warranty because the odds are much higher that it will have issues.

When I was shopping for a BMW i8, I only looked at CPO cars and found 13 examples. Most had some weird damage, like underbody panels hanging from under the car, tires with less than 5mm tread (I brought my own gauge), wheel and collision damage. I found one salesman who disclosed that they can certify anything and the benefit to me is the 1 year of extra warranty and if I wanted to negotiate on the damages, I could, but they would likely only drop the price by 50% to replace the broken items. LOL, I learned that at least for the i8, the dealers were trying to move the cars quickly before they depreciated beyond what they paid for the car and paying the $4k to 5k to "certify" the car, made it more appealing to sell it on the secondary market.

And pre-purchase inspection will usually let the buyer know if there’s any issue with any parts in the car.

Always have a independent pre-purchase inspection done regardless if it’s CPO or not. I purchased a CPO 2015 Audi S7 from a new car Chicago Audi dealer owned by Auto-nation. It was a very expensive used car. Long story short purchased in the middle of February. Normally I do pre purchase inspection, but because I trusted that a CPO was true to what they advertised I didn’t bother. Anyhow I get the car home to Ohio and 10 days later, my mother calls me and says it looks like your paint is peeling off your rear bumper/diffuser. I blew her off, thought it was just soot from the exhaust. Later I found out it was paint peeling. I called the dealer they blew me off about the paint. $5k in paint work needed after we found out both bumpers were thrown on the car with shoddy bodywork. The dealer refused to show me the signed certification checkpoint worksheet. After 90 days of back and fourth and threatening a lawsuit they offered to buy it back for full asking plus all expenses incurred by me.

Your Auto Advocate Yeah Ray, luckily for me CPO’s fall under the new car state lemon law in Illinois where I purchased the car. I didn’t want to sue them and I just wanted them to fix the paint. I’m glad after 90 days they finally came to their senses and realized they were liable. I loved the car, just not the peeling Maaco quality paint.

Lexus has the best CPO program IMO. They add 2 years unlimited mileage warranty to whatever factory warranty is left. If you find a nice service loaner that has 5k miles or a newer low mileage vehicle, you can get a 6 year unlimited mileage bumper to bumper warranty. That's what I did for my last car, I bought an 2019 RX350 service loaner with 3k miles at a steep discount.

Volvo CPO stays with the car, meaning the car can be sold five times and the CPO warranty is still in effect, its "fully transferable". The question if it is worth it or not is easy to be answered, when you have an expensive breakdown is was worth it.
    I bought 7 month ago a CPO 2015 S550 and I added another 2 years for unlimited miles for $ 5000.00 +tax
I just had both struts in front replaced by 88000 miles ,that would be over $ 4000.00
So ,yes it was worth it.
Long time ago I bought an aftermarket warranty on a 1995 S500 ,I forgot for how much but for all that time nothing broke what was covered but these cars were known for evaporator failure (24 hour labor } that would have been covered ,also ignition harness
So still worth for the peace of mind

Most OEM dealers certify their used cars when they get them into inventory and pass inspection. A lot of used cars wont meet the criteria or it will cost to the dealer too much to certify that particular vehicle. A lot of manufacturers (not all) are very strict, a car can only be one owner, have no accidents, have all keys, remotes, books, no body, no paint work, zero, brakes, tires and wear and tear components have to have minimum wear (each manufacturer differs) all have to be original OEM parts, glass has to perfect, interior minimum wear, no discoloration overall vehicle in “like new” condition. If a it takes too much money to bring a used car that comes in from auction or trade to these high standards the dealership will just sell them as used and they will not get the prestige of the Manufacturer’s CPO badge along with qualifying for special financing terms and lower rates through that manufacturer’s financial institution which could be a big savings in rate on used car financing rates. Not only does a CPO go through a more rigorous inspection and reconditioning process, it gets an extended warranty, roadside, trip interruption, manufacturer’s financing ETC. Not all CPOs are equal. Lexus and Honda probably have the best ones out but it’s also the dealership too. Research the dealership and look at their reviews, not just the sales side of the house but the service side. A lot of people leave good reviews on the sales side because they bought a New car but the after sale and service was horrible or vice versa. In my opinion, CPO’s are worth it from the original manufacturer that has a great reputation and a history of good reviews and the right brand. Not all CPO programs are created equal.

Question; when is the “Certification” applied? Is a car that meets the CPO requirements immediately “certified” and then put on the lot.... or, will a dealer place a vehicle on the lot that meets the requirements, but not yet “certify” that vehicle.... in the second example, can the dealer offer the “certification” as an option to a prospective buyer?
Reason I ask, I was in the second example. When buying a 2004 Mustang (used) I was offered the “certification” as an option. I declined as I knew it was only going to be a weekend car.

Very common question. Actually federal laws prohibit dealers from "removing" certification status on a vehicle AFTER it has been publicly advertised by the dealer as carrying a limited warranty. So, once they advertise it as "certified" or "CPO" or "comes with a limited warranty", then the dealer MUST provide the buyer with that warranty, and the dealer pays the fee for this limited warranty to the warranty company directly.

I am a true believer in CPO. I'm only looking at CPO for a Mercedes E Class that I plan to buy in two months when the facelift starts selling. But the only cars that was not CPO that I bought 11 years ago was a Lexus from an Acura dealership. I wanted an Acura but they didn't have what I wanted and bought a 3 year old Lexus IS 350. I took a 3rd party warranty from Acura but it was a weird one to use when I took my car to Lexus for any repairs. I had to pay a $100 deductible and lucky for me, my Lexus didn't ever have any mechanical problems but only electrical. I traded that one in 4 years later for a CPO Lexus GS, and then made the move to Mercedes since then with one CPO E Class and then a previous C Class loaner in 2016 that was CPO from the same year. The sooner you get the CPO, the better the warranty. Mercedes CPOs have unlimited mileage!

My question is: what is a reasonable price difference between CPOs and non-CPOs? Ray uses $2000 as an example a few times, but when I’m shopping around online the difference seems usually much bigger. On the franchised dealers I’ve seen, CPOs are at least $4000 more, and more often $6000+ more, compared to their uncertified counterparts. Why are these CPOs so much more expensive, and how much of a price difference between CPO and non-CPO is too much?

Depends! How long do you intend to keep the car? If you flip cars every two or three years, no. If you keep them for a long time, then yes. I’m a big fan of extended warranties. That is, those warranties offered through the dealer. I got an extended warranty on my Mitsubishi Outlander for $2,000. It’s bumper to bumper coverage for 10 years/100,000 miles in addition to the standard Mitsubishi power train warranty of 10 years/100,000 miles. And, if I do decide to flip the car before the extended warranty is done, I will receive a pro-rated portion refunded. There is a $50 charge each time for warranted repairs AFTER the original warranty expires (5 years/60,000 miles), but hey, have you priced engines, transmissions, shop costs, hourly rates, etc?? Yikes! At $50 per needed repair for the next ten years, I’m very pleased.
