Split is great place but you should also check out some less hyoed places that are out of spotlight even at the Adriatic coast.
I suggest you to check out some islands and their beautiful towns like stunning moon like island of Pag, Island/town Rab, Lošinj with Mali and Veli Lošinj, island of Krk, island of Brač with several towns...
Inland Istria is also spectacular with places like hillside town of Motovun, Bale, this is also truffles region...
There's interesting old town of Omiš, Makarska, ...
