We finally got some snow in Central PA and you know what that means....let's drive to the top of a mountain where only snowmobiles dare to go!
I'm driving my 2002 Suzuki XL7 4x4, and this time my friend Matt joins me in his 2005 Nissan XTerra OFF ROAD edition.
Let's see if we can get the trucks stuck, and see which one is more BEAST in the snow.

Best 4x4 I ever owned was a1970 Jeepster Commando w/auburn LSD. Had to help get my buddy's GF home one night and we had to use both feet to open our doors! She drove right in and backed out NP when we left. V6, 3 SPD stick, Oil bath air cleaner!
I was in a 2000 4runner, with all terrain tires nearly full tread behind a 2006 Xterra on the factory street tires. We were on a snowy mountain road, and stopped to get out and look at something we saw along the road. After getting back in our rigs, the xterra drove off no problem. I however was stuck spinning 1 front and 1 rear tire. The diff lock in the xterra made all the difference. My 4runner had a 3" lift and by looks... you would have sworn the 4runner would have outdone the xterra. The 4runner looked like an off road rig, while the xterra was stock. The 4runners were also available with a diff lock... sadly mine was not one of them! it is one of those things I bet many people don't even know they have. Looks like you had a good time.
Yup the rear diff lock separates the real off-roaders from the wannabes ;)
edlawful it's also a reminder of just how compromised "beefy" looking All terrain tires can be in snow/ice. I run dedicated snow tires (General Altimax Arctic like Ivan's XL7) on my '96 4Runner that e-locker equipped, in the summer it's General Grabber AT2s.
I have a soft spot for Suzuki. I bough my 03 aerio brand new when i got married. I still have it.has 260k miles on it .still has the original engine and transmission. Replaced the radiator, water pump ac condenser and 2 engine mounts. Its been a great car.my stepdaughter drives it now.

My family bought our 2004 XL7 brand new. It ran without a single problem for 14 years until someone from my school rear ended me and totaled it. It was such a solid car. It's a bummer what happened because my Subaru Forester rattles and creaks constantly and the door locks don't, all work and it's 6 years younger than the Suzuki. The Suzuki was so well built, even after 14 years not a single thing rattled! I miss Suzuki.

My dad also had an arieo from new and then got a 2004 xl7 about 6 years ago, now next year it will be my car it’s all good except for the lifter tick lol

Pretty neat system - all trucks should have that, IMO. what a difference it makes when both rears are working together. Open diffs are pretty much useless in snow. When the 4x4 quit due to an internal front diff problem in my old '89 S10 Blazer, I'd get stuck in snow on level ground with the thing. USELESS!
Now locking front AND rear would be sweet - a true 4x4. Would be hard to get stuck with that setup! 👍👍
Just something about 4wd's and snow that are fun. We get it occasionally here in Arkansas , none this past winter, and I never wish for it, but if it sticks around a day or two, I even at my older age like to get out in the 4x4.

Kinda reminds me of the days I used to climb steep hills in a gravel pit and sliding sideways around turns in 4wd. Way too much fun.

You need more snow Ivan, we’ve got 40” and counting. 5’ drift in my back yard and probably a 3’ drift in the front. The snow is about as deep as the mailbox along the road.

Ivan, I just got a 98 MPV All-Sport 4WD. I remember inquiring about the possibility of buying your parents' a while back. Had some fun in mine tonight, north Jersey has a few inches so far.

Mark you wouldn't want our old '98, that thing was fast becoming swiss-cheese unfortunately. I am proud to report though that a few years ago, with Michelin snow tires on, that MPV hauled up this very same spot under similar snow conditions no problem! I had the center diff locked but as you know the Mazda doesn't have a low range. At the time Ivan's XL-7 was on half-worn Cooper AT3 All terrains and I had to tow him up!

I have a 2004 Suzuki XL7 with all season Michelin MXV-4's and it would climb roads in the mountains with snow just like the one you showed with no problems. Also, AWD SUV's could not make it up a snowy steep road where my Suzuki did make it. MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE SAME TIRES WITH AS THE SAME TREADWEAR FOR COMPARISON NEXT TIME. Thanks for review.
Hey I'm thinking about buy one of those what are the things I should look out for.. What issues do they have.. I can't find anything on UA-cam about them..
I'm thinking about a 2003 0r 2001 in my area they're very cheap and clean u don't see much on the road my mechanic friend said they're good cars just not that popular
@@melloyellow6375 Stay away from the Suzuki's of 2005 and higher. They are not Japanese (they're American made/engineered) and they have lots of problems. The Generation I have (2004) is Japanese and they have no problems even after 100K Miles. The only downfall is the mpg of 18 city and 22 hwy for a V6. But that motor is bulletproof!

Just like our Scottish summers! Try 3ft snow lying on solid ice- used to have Citroen Xantia ( designed for French farmers ) and due to its pneumatic suspension spheres NEVER got stuck. Alas old tech don't know if they still use this concept anymore.
I wish Nissan still made or is going to make the Xterra again! My 06 Frontier has a 6 speed manual, 4WD WITH an ARB rear differential air locker. It worked well in snow about 7 or 8 years ago when we got snow in the mountains. If you don't engage the front drive and engage the diff lock, HANG ON. YOU WILL DO DONUTS IN THE SNOW! The rear locker definitely works well when doing non snow off roading. Only item I've seen that works better are those rubber tracks that you install in place of the tires on the vehicle. All four are replaced with these rubber tracks and WOW! Talk about traction assist! Of course it puts a LARGER FOOT PRINT DOWN to enable vehicle movement even in soft sand like Pismo Beach in Central California. You can't run them on the road, they wouldn't last long, and they are pricey! But if you do a lot of beach sand or sand dune running, they are great! I would think they'd do great in snow also! Ya, I wish I had an Xterra with the 4.0L V6 like my Frontier.
What type of tires are on these vehicles? Many people believe all-terrain are suited for snow, but they are not the best option available for winter. The rubber compound in snow tires is softer and has better grip. It's so soft they shouldn't be run in warm temperatures. Good winter tires on a FWD can out perform the traction on a 4WD with all-season tires, assuming issues like ground clearance are not a factor.
I do like your XL7 they are both very capable vehicles!
Ivan - Next year you should drag someone along in a small FWD hatchback. Maybe they have to put their snow chains on but i bet they could keep up.
Small light cars have one advantage...they are LIGHT! A few years ago my buddy went wheeling with me in his 1990 Honda Civic AWD wagon. The XL-7 was put to shame. I kept digging down through the base while he would just fly up the mountains laughing all the way haha!

My cousin has an 01 XTerra 3.3 4x4 auto with the factory towing package and 16 inch wheels. It's never seen snow, BUT out in the desert washes, and nasties, it's really quite a capable machine. It's been mudding a few times and we've never been stuck. I always like challenge vids!
“Real SUVs, no Subarus?” Lol. There’s a reason tons of people in Big Bear and in Colorado, Oregon, Idaho, etc drive Subies. Probably the best for snow. My Forester treads snow better than my 4runner did.
My wife is a traveling nurse and over a period of 20 years owned 4 Suzuki's. Tracker, Vitara, Grand Vitara, and SX4. She gets a new car every 5 years. All had around 125,000 miles on them and were never in the shop for anything other than regular maintenance and a couple recalls. Very reliable cars. When they quit selling them she got a Nissan Rogue AWD. Not near the quality of the Suzuki. 4 years and she wants to get rid of it. Has had CVT issues, coolant leaks, window motors bad, wipers broke. Not sure what to try next. Thinking KIA ?
Honda CRV or Toyota Rav 4?
Judging by how the interior on my in-law's 2013 Rav4 is disintegrating (glovebox latch broke, now the center console lid latch), and by the issues Honda is having with oil dilution on the 1.5T motor in the CRV (and potential CVT worries), A Kia Sorento might not be a bad bet at this point.
I guess there are no new reliable cars left on the market anymore lol! But if you only plan to keep it for 5 years, pretty much anything will be ok ;)
I loved my X the only problem with those were the knock sensors always went on them no matter what. I had mine for years and loved it. Wish I still had it.

That diff lock is pretty neat.
Next time you should get Scott to bring his DeadPool around - I think with yours and Xterra you could sandwich it up the mountain and have fun with it overall. At the same time I liked the part about tree branch the most - how did you hook the tree up - was it just by the yellow cord or did you use additional piece of rope?

The 02 tracker I have has them and it is completely stock as far as I know that is what I had based it on
I'm not sure about the XL7, but Nissan center diff is locked when shifted to 4wd. Also it's funny to see how the xterras front wheel was spinning twice as fast as the rear wheels because it was getting 50% of the power, while the rears got 25% each when the diff is locked.
Both the Nissan and XL7 have no center diff to begin with, they're traditional part-time systems with a hard mechanical split front to rear (the kind that will "crab walk" if you turn tight corners on dry pavement)

I'm looking at both of these exact vehicles, how would you say the cargo space compares between the two? Do you find the gearing on the XL-7 to be pretty tall?
Have you ever tried easing on the E-brake? The drag on the spinning wheel sometimes helps
I was thinking about splitting the cables and have two separate levers, one for each rear wheel haha
So Ivan, do you reccomend these Suzu xl7s? They sell for a lot less money than other Japanese makes. You got to take another Russia trip too.
Yeah, the pre-2006 models are solid little trucks. A bit more fussy than Toyotas in terms of engine maintenance and parts availability. Manual transmission models are extremely hard to find; the autos are gas hogs.
Do they make lunchbox lockers or the aussi locker for the susuki?

A 02 tracker zr2 has lockers on both axles and they interchange with a xl7
"lockers on both axles" No it doesn't, it doesn't have a single locking axle. All it got you was slightly larger tires, specific alloy wheels, some fender flares, and standard power locks and mirrors.
Nothing interchanges with the XL7...it's a unique beast lol

Hey how bout a xl7 update is the tensioner still going good
It now rattles at a hot idle again. I switched from Mobil 1 5W-30 to Rotella 5W-40 T6...seems to help keep the oil pressure higher and the tensioner is definitely quieter :)

2002 Suzuki automatic, 2 inch lift, 31" Firestone Destination MTs...3 front aluminum differentials later, I'm waiting for another one to show up at the wreckers. Then I'm selling the damn thing.
hmmm my front diff is steel. Try one from a later model year with the same gear ratio. The first few years were probably weak.
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I've been looking for 4 months for a steel one. Here in Canada, the steel ones were only available in the 1999-2005(?) Grand Vitara, V6, 5 speed manual. Basically all XL7s sold in Canada were automatic.
There is huge competition to find the steel front ends for the swap as the aluminum ones are prone to breaking with taller tires. The ratios don't matter as I have the 4.88 gears from the broken case to reinstall into the new one. Since Suzis are no longer sold in NA, I just don't want to have to chase parts in the future. Love the little truck (less than 100,000 miles on it) but I need to move on.
Yeah I hear you on the parts availability! Interesting that only the 5-speeds came with the steel front diff.
How tall is the automatic geared on the highway? My speedo shows 67mph at 3krpm in 5th gear, which is about 70mph real speed with slightly taller tires. Fuel economy on mine is around 22mpg average, but falls below 20mpg in the winter.
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I don't really track my mileage except for highway mileage as I have been commuting sometimes weekly with it for the last 5 years on a divided mountain highway. I don't run the 31" MTs but switch to stock highway tires.
The diffs are 4.88. If I recall accurately at 100 kms/hr or 62 mph, the engine is turning about 2800 rpm. I don't recall the 31s but clever math could do it. Speedo is 10% slower with the 31s so the rpm must be the same 10% reduction. But the added torque kills fuel economy...and front aluminum diffs.
It takes 50 ltrs for 400 kilometers or 12 ltrs/100kms...20 mpUSg. This route has 2 serious climbs of 3650 ft and 3800 ft (Coquihalla: Highway Through Hell, History Channel). The Zuk also has a roof rack/light bar that does cut some fuel economy. I'd guesstimate around town with stock tires is around 17 mpUSg.
The 31s kill the gas mileage by about 15-20%. I don't have hard numbers but the range of a tank of fuel is reduced by that much It's really noticeable. However, since my other ride is a V10 Ford 3/4 ton, I feel OK about it.
The Zuk is surprisingly hard on fuel. The V10 gets about 30% less mileage but is waaay more truck and more useful. But a lot harder to get unstuck.
Drag your brakes a little bit it will make your diffs act like lockers
My Volvo wagon could do this with its AWD and soft grippy snow tires. Most of your grip comes from proper tires... rest is the vehicle. I continue to be impressed by my Volvo wagon able being able to shimmy its way threw tough snowy situations.
Your Volvo might pick up a hole in the oil pan on the way up to that part of the access road, just saying. Although an XC70 would probably have enough clearance.
Cool! I have a video coming soon on a 2005 Volvo V70. AWD and snow tires are a fantastic combo in the white stuff. Ground clearance is also key when it gets deep. No AWD system will help if it's stuck on its belly ;)

and it depends if its plowing with its chasss its fighting a battle it will lose at some point. but i think ground clearance it isn't too bad, i have XC70 cross country AWD (with 3.2L inline 6 engine) has a ton of miles on it and runs like a champ

My brother is selling me his 2004 Suzuki XL7. Good condition, runs nice, and under 100,000 miles but I just noticed in the pictures he sent me that the manufacture idiots put the gas lid on the wrong side! I hate pulling in opposite of everyone else and having to walk around to the other side of the vehicle especially during winter
All my cars have had gas lids on the passenger side...both foreign and domestic!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics yeah I know :o) I'm just griping a little cause it sucks how everywhere just wont unify the systems. I mean things like this here with the gas lids and things like either go with only metric or imperial, and either drive only on the left or right side of the road....eh maybe one of these days it will happen though :o)

Rogue is actually very capable with snow tires but I don't want to shorten the lifespan of the CVT lol!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I have the Euro version of the Rogue, The X-trail 2.0 dieseil with a regular 6speed automatic. I Russia are plenty of them.
Pulled a newer BMW 5 series XD from a ditch this morning with it . The curve was tricky, sunny morning but under the threes was black ice, I have studded winter tires, Beemar had only winter tires.
