    I came across Bob Mayer through 'The Autopian' and i feel like I struck gold! He is great at describing real world auto features, also their shortcomings and failures. For another but of fun I suggest searching 'turbo encabulator', you can thank me later...

      These were good,he said the hood was repainted so the car was in a wreck the chrome trim wasnt put back on properly after the wreck thus thats where the rattles came from..He even said the car had overspray from the repainted hood and what else?
      As for running rough? The handling part was bogus as these did handle really good..I put my parents through hell and never lost control..
      Bonus..the lean burn/spark control computer were known for problems for some cars..You can remove it put on a vacuum advanced distributor and orange box ecu and swap the smog carb and you gain loads of power, these never were allowed to be fully floored due to their emission equipment..Parents had a 1981 the did get had 23 mpg hwy and averaged 16 in the city and 18.5 to 19 mpg mixed driving when we removed it in 1983...My parents was black with leather, moon roof LS version with the aluminum mag wheels and white lettered tires..In 1985 Dad added a 4 barrel and 1970 LD 340 intake and 650 cfm carter carb and the car performed better than my Uncles then new 1985 Monte Carlo SS..At the same time Dad put duel exhaust with medium but nice sounding turbo mufflers..That car lasted well over 300,000 miles before my sister getting t boned in 1998 in the car..She was fine, but car wasnt..

    A friend had the sister car from Dodge, the Mirada. Ran up 318,000 miles and was still able to sell it!

      My parents had one with over 300,000 miles they bought the 1981 Cordoba LS all black, factory mag wheels ,moon roof,console..Slick looking car..Sister totaled it in 1998 she was t boned, she was fine but the Cordoba and 1996 Explorer were totaled!

    Whenever I see a Chrysler from this area I always think of The Simpsons episode when krusty the clown was a kid and his Rabbi father was asked "Would you buy a Chrysler"?

    It's hard to believe that the 318 V8 was downgraded to a mere 120 HP for most 1980 model Chrysler cars making it one of the least powerful V8's relative to cubic inches to date. That was the same HP that Chevy's little 267 made along with the new Pontiac 265 and certain versions of Ford's 255

    • @mypronouniswtf5559
      @mypronouniswtf5559 5 місяців тому

      318 had 120 hp for 80 then more in 1981..
      318 blew the 267 away..even the least powerful 318 had 120 hop but 245 torque! 267 had 105 hp and 197 torque..Ford 255 had115 hp and 191 torque..The 318 blew the 267 away..
      Remember you also could get a 318 Four Barrel and a 360 2 barrel and 360 Four Barrel for 1980..
      Also with Chrysler they were the easiest to gain power, even today for $200 you can get a vacuum advanced distributor, orange box ecu another $200 for a non smog 2 barrel carb and you will get 190 to 200 hp from that 318! Thats the low compression version, least powerful year made!! Dad did that on his new Cordoba LS and it blew the doors off of my Uncles then new 1985 Monte Carlo SS and after that Dad put a 1970 LD 340 intake and 650 carter and duel exhaust it destroyed that Monte SS by 4 car lengths! GM/Ford did internal junk to their engines and you couldnt gain power like a lean burn/spark control computer Chrysler product.
      I drove all those cars you mentioned...Uncle had a Chrysler dealer from 1950-1990's..Other Uncle was a General Manager at a GM dealer...Family drove Mopar and GM..I worked for them and drove every brand of 70's,80's,90's cars..I bought/sold them in the 90's as 80's I was a teen.
      People assume Chrysler was bad but they were not..GM were worse and Ford was well being Ford not that good but better than Chevy worse than Oldsmobile.I even drove the crappy Japanese and European cars of the day talk about slow and parts falling off even on new 1 year old 1980's Toyota's that rusted and didnt start due to bad carburetors!

    What puzzles me about this program is that this guy's fuel economy is consistently lower than my owwn Real World experience. The 1981 version was my first car. It had every factory option, but a slant 6, not a 318. Although it was outrageously underpowered, fuel economy was fantastic, always above 21 mpg at moderate highway speeds with the cruise control on. My 81 hack no rattles, meaning Chrysler really stepped up quality control since it's near death experience the previous year

      He's at the low end but those numbers are real for the conditions he's driving in. I sold these cars new and this is what people really got for mileage. The Cordoba, Gran Fury, Fifth Ave with 318 2Bbl carb engine was pretty typically giving 15 overall, 12-14 city and 16-19 highway. The biggest problem selling back then was 18%-20% APR loans and that only about 70% of the loans got approved!

    Just comparing it to the Cutlass, and even the least popular generation of Thunderbird, I can see why this generation of Cordoba didn't sell particularly well.

      Chrysler problem was Eaton 1998 who screwed over Chrysler the then most profitable car company around..Mercedes stole all of its money and Engineering division, most advanced in the world and left Chrysler out to dry, that is what happened!
