    Distance: 83km
    Ascent: 938m
    Descent: 1520m
    End of day elevation: 2598m
    Weather; Partly Sunny, 16°C
It was a beautiful but very cold morning at Upper Lagunitas campground.
As usual, I took my time with breakfast and a couple of cups of coffee...and during that time, my co-inhabitants, Mark and Alan, had packed up and were on their way while my first cup of coffee was still steaming.
The ride that day was an interesting mixture of high planes with constantly beautiful views around almost ever turn, forested climbs and descents and some very rough surfaces. Water was a little more difficult to come by than I had expected...partially due, I'm sure, to the time of year I was riding through that area...as many streams beds were dried out...but it wasn't as desperate as the Great Divide Basin. At one point I met a rancher who was fixing a fence outside of his barn, and asked him if he had any water to spare...of which he graciously provided.
I found it interesting as me and my water bottles followed him into his barn, which was a mixture of horse stables and farm equipment...a world so far away from my everyday....which is a large part of why we do rides like this!
As the day progressed, so did the cloud cover...and completely enveloped the sky by the time I finished the paved climb up to Hopewell Lake. From there, it was a forested downhill to an informal, cow-patty-strewn road side campground that Mark, Alan and I had thought would be a good destination for that day...and when I got there, they had already established themselves.
I was pleasantly surprised at how varied the environment was in the high country of northern New Mexico...as it was so different from the stereotypical desert landscapes we often see in pictures and movies made or situated in New Mexico.

Again, what a great start of the day, seeing your video day of the GDMBR. Yesterday I was on a fair (thousands of visitors) of hike and bike, (Three days event) as an informant. This about (for me) informing interested people who like to know more about cycling in the USA. We (several visitors and me) talked also of the GDMBR. What an inspirational day it was. This way of informing (of you) people is awesome! For me one of the best way to get to know (from the experience of cyclists) from people who done the ride itself! Thanks again!

Sounds like you had a fantastic, inspiring day....what was the name of the fair? I bet your were a great representative of riding/touring/bikepacking in the USA! So are you planning to do the ride yourself? Glad you're liking the videos! Cheers!

I’m glad we weren’t the only ones who experienced rough conditions the first day in NM. Rained all day and road became impassable. Pushed bikes off road for hours!

Yikes!!! I guess one can only accept the conditions and deal with them accordingly!

The fair is (in Dutch named) “fiets en wandelbeurs” I love to inspire people for the fun of touring on a bicycle (for longer periods especially). Yes, next July 1st (approximately) I will start in jasper and stop cycling in the end, in Antelope. Wells. Than I cycle to Tucson Arizona and take the bus and or train to Seattle. I hope to film my tour too. But I won’t promise to upload them on UA-cam. Never done that. There are still movie parts from my previous trip; Prudhoe bay to Panama City. I don’t know how to o start…. Thanks again, looking forward to your other days! What is your next (big) cycle trip? You’re welcome to start and finish at my home, this when you plan to cycle in Europe!

Wow, that sounds like a totally epic ride!! I bet you inspire a lot of people when you share your stories. Sounds like you have an ambitious ride this coming summer. '
Will you ride the GDMBR route or the Icefields Parkway from Jasper to Banff? If you record your ride on video, you should definately post it on YT!!
As for my plans...I have some for sure, but I won't reveal what it is until the end of this series... ;-).

Hi, thank you for your kind messages last time...
Can you please let me know if it is possible how much do you spend on food, etc. As I were planning on going out for a bike tour😊

You are welcome! Food expenditure is a pretty broad issue...and TBH I didn't keep track of what I spent down to the penny. Also, prices vary depending on where you are, ie if you're in a big town with grocery store options, your money will go further and you'll have much better options, but if you have to depend on C-stores along the way, your options will obviously be limited and you'll spend, on average, much more...and I did eat at restaurants quite a few times... I tried to keep one extra day of food on the bike in the form of tortilla shells (which pack down well) peanut butter, candy/chocolate bars and dehydrated dinners (which can be pricy but are very handy) as well as apples if/when availalbe. I think I averaged about $20/day on food. A little more info than you asked for, howeverI hope that helps...

@reinhartbigl367 it does, yes, as I can get a rough idea as in the u.k we have lidl and aldi shops which does help alot out on the food & drink end of it..
But if I want to get out of u.k to France, for example, I'll have to get a ferry ticket across, which will cost roughly £45 or at least $55 🤔

Nice to see that all of the NM sections aren't rocky and rough. A lot of it looks slow going though. Q: How much water did you pack when leaving Lagunitas to reach Canon Plaza area? I've heard that section and south doesn't have much water access. You did a great job of hanging in there. Thanks for videos, great info.

      Thanks Mike!
There is a pond at Lagunitas that I watered-up at....water was at a bit of a premium along that section, at least at that time of year as many streams were dried out...I'm not assuming, but there are many ranches along the way that may be able to help should the need arise...If you have good water capacity (I wish I had more at that time) you should fare well.
