    Distance: 113km
    Ascent: 1276m
    Descent: 1228m
    End of day elevation: 2282m
    Weather; Sunny, 25°C
The high pressure weather stayed with us overnight, and in the morning it was again very cold. I managed to get myself together and leave shortly after Mark and Alan, and Larry had left earlier than all of us.
It took quite a while for my extremities to get warmed up even after the sun had breached the horizon...and riding at a good clip. The waterproof booties helped quite a bit, but a more insulated pair of gloves would have helped that morning for sure!
It wasn't long before the route broke out of the forest and out onto a beautiful, wide open plane...where I had all the sun I could handle.
The morning ride was stunning, but the surface was quite rough in spots...again, the motion stabilization in my camera does an amazing job at making it look smooth.
I caught up with Mark at one point later in the morning while he was taking a roadside break, and then Larry further up the road. Before the stopping at the Beaverhead Work Centre for a break , I saw a sign for an "outfitter"...and being a bit short on snacks, I decided to pull in and see if they had a store. Turns out they did not, as I later learned that they only outfitted for their private, guided hunting outings...but invited me in and graciously gave me a big bag of snacks...it was totally unexpected and I was blown away...yet another example of the kindness, respect and generosity one finds on this route. With my bag of snacks strapped to my rack, I continued to the Beaverhead Work Centre, where the ACA app identified a much needed water source...and it's there that I met up with Alan, Mark and Larry, and with who I shared my gift of snacks.
Not long after the break and drinking more water than I thought I'd want shortly after leaving, I stopped at another water source identified on the app...this time it was a ranch. The fellow was very kind and showed me where the well was...and along the way was telling me that he was trying to get off the app, as he had 3 or 4 occasions where seemingly ill-prepared riders would come to his ranch in need of potentially serious medical assistance...apparently they had underestimated the conditioning they needed for the GDMBR...and in all cases he had to drive the person to the nearest hospital...a 5+ hour drive due to the remoteness of that part of the route...
From said ranch, the real climbing of the day began, with the first of several long, steep climbs as the route entered the Gila National Forest. There were two campsites along that part of the route...separtated by a 12km climb/descent. The goal from the beginning of the day was to camp at the furthest of the two, so when Mark and I met Alan at the first camp, it looked really nice and I knew that if I went to see the others who had their tents setup there, that I would want to do the same, so we chatted a bit at the roadside, then continued on our way to the Canyon Creek Campground...a hard fought for but very peaceful, route-side camp at the very bottom of a steep valley. By the time we got there, the sun had started to set, so I setup camp and retrieved water from the small stream flowing beside my camp before running out of natural light. Mark and I chatted a bit about our day and the day to come, which we wanted to end in Silver City.

That's too funny, "Rhinehart is the master of getting food and water from people". That was my job, bumming water with a smile. Over decades of touring I've learned that people along the road will help you. Traveling by bicycle disarms most people and they're curious about what the heck you're doing out there. That is a big part of the adventure. Thanks very much for motivation vids! Nice to see the roads in NM get better, and the great scenery. ☮

I thought it was funny too! Certainly didn't intend to come away from that experience at the outfitters with the largess that I did...I just thought they would have some type of basic store I where I could buy a few snacks...I was blown away by their selfless generosity....and I was happy to be able to share with my fellow riders that day!
The roads were certainly better than they could have been if it was raining, however the surface was a challenge as times...as mentioned, the motion stabilization of the better action cameras is amazing!
      Thanks Mike!

I felt that New Mexico had some of the most beautiful scenery and the day captured in this video was one of my favorite. Your effort to film and process these terabytes of data are hugely appreciated by those of is to lame to have done so!

Thanks! I'm glad I was able to capture much of it on video and share it with everyone else who did that ride...NM was absolutely stunning...I wasn't expecting it to be as diverse as it was! We were sooo lucky to have those conditions in NM, weren't we?

Great video! I liked your reference to Coyotes.
On our way to Silver City we were being chased by a storm so we tried to make it all the way
but nightfall came and we had to stop.
We pitched our tent on the side of the road in the dark. That night the coyotes were howling all around us. It was quite magical.

      Glad you enjoyed it Bret!
When those monsoons race through, it's really the luck of the draw...sometimes you can avoid them, other times, not so much... ;-)
Agreed that it's magical hearing the coyotes howling and the elk bleeting in the night!

@@reinhartbigl367 indeed. October is probably a better month than August to avoid the monsoons.

Wow wow wow. I know I've said it before but the beauty of New Mexico has really taken me by surprise. The Banff area is an absolute jawdropper and the Northern US gorgeous, but I always thought that NM more or less would be an arid desert. Tan, hot and dead. Then you come rolling along filming it and it's green and lush and super beautiful. Eye-candy. I noticed you camped with someone called Nicolai (if that's how he spells it). Same name as my son, except his spells Nicolay. Funfact: The name originates from the Greek name Nikolaos and means "The victor of the people". The saint Nicholas was known to offer gifts to the poor and so the name is also the origin of what we now know as Santa Claus (Saint Nicholas).
    Cheers Reinhart, almost done 😥🙂

Hey A.K., glad the video was able to broaden your perspective about NM...and I hope it put more momentum behind you doing that ride!! ;-) I too didn't think it was going to be as beautiful and diverse as it was (and is...)...and going through the footage, I found myself replaying some of the clips several times because the scenery was so stunning! Yes, Nicolai was a fellow from your part of the world. I didn't get a chance to talk to him much, but we did see him several times...and the last I saw of him was at the Beaverhead Work Camp. I hope his ride went well. Thanks for the background info on the name...did you give your son that name due to its history, or that it's a nice name...or perhaps both? :-)

@@reinhartbigl367I didn't know about the Santa Claus part until just recently, so it definately didn't play a part when we chose a name for him 18 years ago 🙂 Many parents seem to decide what to name their children way before they're even born. We didn't go down that road. We had 3 or 4 options that we felt were good names, but not knowing if it was to be a boy or a girl we decided that the best way was to get to know our baby first to get a feeling for what the right name would be. And there you go, a boy it was and Nicolay was who he turned out to be 🙂
It certainly did, the only thing I lack is the money to do it. I'm constantly chasing that big lottery win but every Saturday I face the reality of having to work for 1 more week 😄😄
      Cheers!

Hello Rhinehart, I presume you are using a GoPro for your documentation. How do store your footage. I plan to do the ride this summer. I have really enjoyed following your adventure.

Thanks Gary! Actually, I used an insta360 One RS. I stored my footage on SD cards...in total I used a bit over 1TB of storage. Started with 32GB's, then a few 64's, then a 128 and finally a 256. Stored them in a plastic case when I moved on to the next one. You're gonna have a great ride this summer!

@@reinhartbigl367 reinhart! Thanks for the response.
I have another question, I noticed in your first episode you took a bus to Banff. Did you take that from Calgary? I’m flying into Calgary and will not get into there until around 10:00PM. If you did fly into Calgary were you able to get a ride right from the airport or did have to stay over and catch a bus in the morning or did you arrive early enough to catch the bus. Thanks for the information. Again enjoy following along

@@garyalexander1145 I did take the bus from Calgary. Logistically for me, there were a lot of moving parts...but I ended up picking up the Brewster bus from Calgary airport in the early afternoon. They were great with respect to taking my still-boxed bike...and took me right to the hostel in Banff.
I would suggest booking yourself into a nearby hotel that offers an airport shuttle so as to get from and back to the airport where you can connect with the bus the next day. It can be pricey, but it may save you a lot of headaches. I hope this helps and that all goes well! Cheers!
