Jack's drumming is simply out of this world! I believe Peter Erskine once said all drummers got their licks that you can pick up as a drummer, except Jack. He creates something completely new each time.
RESPECTS to these musicians, they poured their heart into their music. 1983 actually was a recovering time for music. and a transition out of Rock and Roll into the more the video world. I didn't particularly care for MTV and it's offering and slipped into New Age, but had this gotten more push, I would have enjoyed this option. Thank You for posting.
This one is amazing!!! Gateway is my favorite trio, but I think it's one of the best jazz trio ever. This recording should be published as an official album. This group has reunited few times and published only 4 albums, so it has not received the attention it deserved, but it's a reference for avant garde and post modal jazz.
Not sure what other drummers play a non-percussion instrument as well. He's not just good, he's legit worthy of performing at high profile shows like this one.
Abercrombie's guitar lines are much less predictable than Metheny's imo. Metheny listed him as one of his top favorites. You can defintely hear Metheny's influence in the 80's on John's tone.
This is sensationally good. And I'm not a big fan of this sort of music in the main; but it's intense and yet reflective at the same time. Jack de Johnette is a remarkable percussionist. Great stuff.
Nice line up of three great musicians. I first got hip to this trio back in 1975. Dave Holland is one of mine favorite Upright Bass players. The legendary Jack DeJonette on drums.
Very well recorded. As someone mentioned above, there are no licks almost to Jack’s playing. Its all music and laying foundations for Dave and John. Masterclass!
¡¡INCREIBLE!! ; ES MUY IMPORTANTE SABER QUE EL ESTILO QUE ELLOS LOGRARON FUE TODO UN PARTE AGUAS EN EL JAZZ DE AQUELLOS AÑOS. COMO SIEMPRE LOS TRES INTEGRANTES FUERON DE UNA EJECUCIÓN IMPECABLE. UN REGISTRO SONORO DE COLECCIÓN.
I thought the same particularly because of the guitar sound. But his phrasing and melodic approach is definitely Abercrombie. It also feels like a physical workout. Such intensity going forward and forward, not stopping. Very good trio.

Tried to catch John Abercrombie in London in the 70,but sadly missed him,so glad to have this, now inmy70s.

LOVE Gateway, so brilliant lyrical creativ musically artistry L O V E it!!!
John Abercrombie's playing/solo at the beginning of Back-Woods Song... eight minutes of overflowing wit that sounds effortless.
Beautifully amazing.
and in my old town of Bremen, in my favorite cinema!
U always feel the pulse with J.DeJohnette!
What an energetic trio. John we miss you.
Jack Dejohnette!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so nice to hear Jack playing piano!

RIP. John Abercrombie.Saw Gateway twice and this was probably my favorite line up of all his incarnations.Great group.

Two hours of live Gateway. This is fantastic, thanks so much.
J.DJ.is a volcano.D.H.is a creativity.J.A.is a thinker.Together they are a power trio.
Three of the very best to ever pick up a guitar, a bass, and a pair of drum sticks.
28:40 bliss ❤
John Abercrombie was before Metheny. RIP my friend.

Why isn't such a wonderful sound source made into a CD?
このような素晴らしい音源がCD化されていないのは何故?
this is pre Pat Metheny. Abercrombie was pioneering this sound 15 years before Pat came up through the ranks.
Very cool set! Abercrombie reminds me of Metheny here. Not that it's a bad thing. Love Metheny's work too.
he was indeed a influence on Pat's early work, in the 70s...
John Abercrombie looks like Mike Piazza in that photo.
Jack Dejohnette es la perra onda. Qué buenos solos.
Funny was thinking this far more imaginative than Metheny
I thought the same particularly because of the guitar sound. But his phrasing and melodic approach is definitely Abercrombie. It also feels like a physical workout. Such intensity going forward and forward, not stopping. Very good trio.
Including Lennie Tristano ca 1.50
Who's playing piano?
Check the description for the track listing and personnel.
Heard it. Thought Metheny. Like it anyway. (sorry.)
