  • The newest AI Music Generator Suno AI launched a few days ago, and it is as impressive as I am scared. I tested out the so-called ChatGPT for music, reviewed how it worked, and shared some of my thoughts about AI, AI generated music, and what the world may look like for music artists if AI generated music goes unchecked.

I think in the longterm, (I don't want this to trigger anybody reading this) but eventually, money will simply become fun coupons or pointless entirely. Incorrect: It is NOT "melting it together" or stealing it. It is factually inventing new stuff. You cannot melt songs and get a new one. You have to understand how music works and what belongs together. Yes, that is trained based on existing music. So is it with humans. If you listen only K-Pop and someone asks you to write a song, chances are low you gonna write Jonny Cash style music. You need existing Instruments, Samples and Inspiration. It is just much more specific, faster and precise. Music production came into the living room with tools like Logic and the Studios didn't like it. Now it goes the next step. So what. Every other "thinking" job is impacted as well. GPT gives so much good and precise information compared to my doctor. That won't stop me from actually going to him. Same Lawyers, programmers, photographers (they got panic when iPhone made Bokeh-Style photos). Jobs are changing. That is technology.

And I myself am a musician who did stock music and sync licensing for way too many years than I'll admit. The thing is that you have to be smart about this and keep an open mind. It's simply another blow to recorded music. The first was the increased availability of cheap digital recording gear, the second was the internet replacing physical distribution, and the advent is the third blow and probably the nail in the coffin.
At no point have any of these developments changed the need or enjoyment of LIVE music. Digital recording, distro, nor digital artificial intelligence. None of these things can replace the live experience. Holograms?...lol Robots playing actual instruments? It's just a super awkward way implement a sequencer.
As for Suno, it's pretty good (and will get better) but if you listen to the tracks closely you can hear a certain murkiness, like the sound has been carved out of block of white noise, and it hasn't all been carved away. Kind of like a sculpture in stone where bits of the original block are still apparent.

For almost my entire young life I have listened to old people that are disgruntled by new *anime* that are made only with the computers (it was the '80s), respect to the classics "toons", or by soulless music that is the same as others songs from before...
Well... I don't get the fuss about AI. It's a tool, of course artists should unite to better be recognized of their work, but their problems was there even before AI generative tools...
Eventually there will be agreements between artists of various kind and software houses that will offer their tools...
The big problem with AI it's the data scraping, the copying of things there will be founds over the net, and feed to the "brain"...
but from an ignorant point of view like mine...
it's not so much different how our creative method works... (we cannot read big datas of course, but we can copy someone)

almost everyone doesn't understand how AI actually works. It doesn't copy, or store data on images/video/music/text, etc... It processes patterns algorithmically into weight associates in a neural network (based off how our own brain works), those weights are connections between different concepts and prompts that you then use to recreate weighted patterns. None of the images, songs, text, videos, etc... reside in the data. It's like having an artist who can copy very well from visual memory, extrapolated to a higher degree.

Artists don’t make their bread from streaming songs. They make it from live performances, selling tickets, merch, and the overall experience. Artists, with few exceptions, have ghost writers, and use a variety of tech like auto tune to create “their” music. Unlike writers and visual artists, musicians have the luxury of live performances where the human connection is real. There’s a lot more to experiencing music than just the lyrics or melody ✌️

AI is just a tool, and the truth is we either learn to take advantage of it or get run over by it. I get kinda irritated when people start talking about AI is theft & thus can't be copyrighted. Artists have been using computerized tools to enhance their music for decades. And yes, SOME AI tools trained on artists without their knowledge or compensation, but not all AI projects did, some projects are run by artists and others had artist contributions. To me, the biggest fear of AI is that we forget how to do things because AI is such an efficient crutch. Anybody still memorize phone numbers? Read maps? How about actual researching instead of querying the internet?

Considering that I have seen more issue's with how current living situations are more expensive than it should be, and I live in Norway.
I've seen different types of worry from on and offline and people like me don't have that same issue with living compared to my friends who are struggling in aspect.
No one wants to look at the greater picture, because no one can see the greater picture. The US certainly has managed to do that over the years.

I don't see "real" negatives on this, my positive views is time. Even if it gets to be voice perfect why do you have to use the actual audio, This can be like photoshop shortcutting shading/gradient/coloring for artists, you get an idea for a song maybe have a line or 2 of a verse or chorus plug it into this and see what comes out then it may not be perfect but close and you can cut weeks or months of songwriting down, take the lyrics play and sing them yourself. There's maybe alot of aspiring singers/musicians not good at the intricate lyrics writing phase and this can at least be a tool. True I can see people just taking these finding a way around the pay thing however that works on the site and saying "I made this" tech is tech but mostly like say using ai art as a starting reference for an artist to use the angle or outline to do their own hand drawn thing this might benefit those wanting to cut time down on lengthy album development. Me I just been making funny songs about 90s and 80s cartoons like prompting 90s quirk rock about an ogre who likes onions and has a donkey friend and it literally singing about shrek and donkey haha or my favorite so far is simply putting in 80s hip hop he-man and it figuring out to discuss his eteral struggle with skeletor, it's funny as hell

    Question for you:
Would these artists be willing to be regulated as to what they can sing, what messages they can push, clothing they may wear, restrictions on profanity, promotion of drug use, violence and on and on and on.
My guess is NO... they would absolutely say they have the right to do as THEY please. Right?
So... why do they believe AI technologists should be dictated to?
As for the so-called art they create... did they create it in a vacuum, or did THEY hear many other artist and get influenced in some direction. Look at mumble rappers... are they all just waking up one day and discovering mumbling on their own? If all of them are feeding off other artists past and present... why not AI?
AI is going to enable me, you, joe next door and ever other joe with a mouse and an internet connection to create music. The market is going to be flooded.

    • @samthesomniator

I am totaly not against AI music, is is very interesting. But what exactly do you mean with "creating music"? ^^ I mean if it comes to putting in a text describing a song you want the computer to compose for you, I wouldn't really say I created that song by doing so and click the start button afterwards. 😁 Feels much more like purchasing something, as you could also give the song description to a singer songwriter a band or a composer and let them do it. We would certainly not consider us creating music if we purchased it by someone else with musical skills, or would you?
Computers are pretty nice in calculating for a while too. But having a computer never made me a mathematician. So why should having a program like this make me a musician. Isn't creating music something somehow about being able to put the notes together in a meaningful way by your own skills, either by profound knowledge of the theory, a very good intuition about it or a mixture of both?
Gets interesting if someone uses the output not as is but for samples and collages, if you ask me.

@@samthesomniator When a musician uses a drum machine, he is using a dumb "AI". Suno is the new drum machine. If You owned the music that the drum machine created and you sang over, so to here.
Suno allows you to add your on lyrics and it adds the flavour. I've done it, a semi-pro musician friend has done so. She is going to use her own lyrics, have Suno create the instrumentals from the lyrics, then remove the lyrics and perform the song herself. Basically she will trace on the semi-transparent canvas and claim the talent.
She will own the final product.
This, however, is just pretending AI hasn't arrived. Others wont bother doing the performances and will let AI carry the day. I've found songs on Suno that are so good they are now on my car driving playlist! I'd happily pay to buy them!

Because after listening to hundreds of AI music, none of them had lyrics good enough to be remembered. Will that ever happen ? Maybe really, I think emotions are still not fully grasped in AI yet. Even if we have performing robots with AI music we love to sing along to, I still can definitely see a future where both humans and AI plays. Art is not just about the money. If we think about an utopian futuristic society where work doesn't exist, people would do art even more even if robots could do it too, even if they are 'better' at it.
