TSR did oversaturate back then, but fans of those first books have wanted something like this for 30 years. TBF Dragonlance is a little past it's due date for the newer crowd, but with a solid show that could change. Pumping out mediocre products ahead of the show (that don't actually support the show's narrative, as is apparently the case) doesn't feed into that well, though.

God, could you imagine a GOOD Ravenloft series? Where it starts off with the book in season 1, where you're following what you think is a good guy, but just watch him descend into evil. Like up until half way through season 1 you really like him, you're there for him, then he becomes an Incel with horrible powers by the end. Season 2 could be about a party trying to take him down but ultimately failing (I don't know, I just see montages at this point where he just wipes the floor of every party. maybe this just an episode or two). The rest of the season is getting the actual party together and running the actual published adventure (or parts of it), It could be such an amazing series... you got adventure, you got horror, you got fantasy.... There really is something there.

I was really excited at the prospect of a DragonLance show whether it adapted the original stories or gave us something new set in that world. This is a major disappointment. Hasbro clearly has no clue what it’s doing with or what it wants to do with the D&D IPs. I don’t understand how this is an example of them fumbling the ball. I love Joe but passion doesn’t make a successful show. There was no reason to believe this wasn’t just going to be another in a line of fantasy flops. Especially considering how niche interest in the IP is. There is interest from nostalgia by older players, but in modern times, it’s not a popular setting. You aren’t going to sell a show based on niche interest by older D&D players especially when the dragon lance setting book and dragon lance novel and dragon lance board game sold so poorly. My biggest concern was that Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weiss were involved.

In my personal opinion, and I come from this as someone in the creative section of the entertainment industry rather than production, I think there's a misconception about how much a production company or studio values "the blessing" of an IP's creator(s). It can have value from a PR perspective, but it can also be a liability in some instances (from the production company's perspective). They ironically want a well established IP with a well established fan base, but also they want total control of the IP with no input from anyone once they acquire it. Think of the sale of Star Wars to Disney - I'm sure part of that deal had a clause about George Lucas completely stepping out of the picture in every way. Make no mistake, I love Weis and Hickman, but I'm sure they - and any other creatives - will tell you the same thing that I am about producers.

With every new announcement like this I really get closer to just starting to slam my head against a wall. Only have a little bit of knowledge of Dragonlance from reading about it in an article and it seemed interesting. Also to see someone's passion put into a project go to waste is just so demoralizing...

I vaguely remember some announcement or teaser shown some time ago, with animation, Shohreh Aghdashloo's voice, and that it was related to Dragonlance. If that has nothing to do with Joe, then i wasn't even aware of his project. Still a shame. I'm neither a fan nor very knowledgeable on Dragonlance, the only information i know about the setting comes from the russian musical based on the arc of Raistlin's attempts to become a god. But i would've liked to see what Joe manages to create.
    upd.
Ah, apparently the announcement i was talking about was the tabletop.

It's unfortunate, especially when you see how much passion he has for the project. He cares about the source materials, he had the authors input and respect to make changes in away that would adapt the source material to the screen. I think now days studios are not overly willing to take a chance with IPs they are not sure will perform well and sell additional merch. It seems Hasbro/WotC is taking a different direction these days and I dont see them taking any "chances" as they wait and see the success of their next flagship with the 2024-2025 new D&D books (5e revised..5.5...6e?)

Raistlin and Dalamar were great anti-hero characters. The extremes that Raistlin goes to. The specifics of his curse. The way his story weaves through the lore in other spaces. I watched Joe's interview with Tracey Hickman and believe Joe really wants to see the series made. I'd like to see it as well. The Kiefer Sutherland cartoon was freaking stop motion.

There are many stories of loads of work going into a movie/series only to have the whole thing scrapped. The best for instance I can think of is the reboot to the 80s movie Heathers. That had a pretty obvious and understandable reason for being shelved, but regardless the whole thing was shot, packaged, and ready to go.
Joe deserves better. Like A LOT better. And so do we, but if WotC is going off the rails I hope it's because Hasbro is pulling the strings. I really hope a production company gets back to him soon. If a fantasy movie/series comes out with Joe's name on it, my only reaction will be "just take my money."

It's sad that the show isn't going to be released as we have way too few shows like this. However, maybe it got a bit too far from what the DL ip should be about or maybe it was just too expensive to make. It is not, like some comments suggest, that WotC is evil out to destroy everything players love. They have a TON of settings, and maybe they want to focus on something else.

Dragonlance is a weird one. Clearly it was huge in the 80's and 90's, and had reach beyond D&D players. Folk from that generation have huge amounts of nostalgia for it, and I think if this is done well it could tap into that in the way Stranger Things has.
That said, as a D&D product it's not culturally relevant any more. As a 3e player, it was barely on my radar until I started actually collecting books in a more thorough manner. Those who started with 4e and 5e seem to have even less attachment to it.I
That's not to say it can't be done well and pull us all in, but it would have to be done really , really well.
Its not just d&d that's moved on either. 80's fantasy epics are quit different to the novels which are most popular today. I know a lot of folks still love Dragonlance, and I'm happy for them, but from an impartial perspective I just don't think it holds up.

Honestly I agree that at least part of why Dragonlance didn’t sell well was because of the closeness of release to the OGL thing. That being said I think WotC shot themselves in the foot by not going further with this show. The more people that watched the show the more people who are exposed to dnd and might buy a rule book. This feels like a studio shutting down an almost complete production for tax purposes, but there definitely hasn’t been any recent precedent for that…

I really don't understand WIzards. The books were New York best sellers for 20 years. There are over 35 million books in circulation of the original trilogy. You have a built in audience and the passion of Joe behind and the blessing of the authors. How is that a hard decision. If you don't want to take the risk let Joe have the TV rights and let him take the risks. I don't understand there thought process especially if they are going to do anything with it. This is the closest we as fans of the series have ever come and I would like to thank Joe for the valiant effort.

I love all Bob World Builder videos. This one really hits me in the feels. Gonzo and I LOVED Dragonlance. We read all the books and were looking forward to all this Dragonlance stuff. I know Joe Manganiello was VERY passionate about this project and has been trying to do it for years. However, after they completely trashed the whole setting to make that abomination of a book and board game, I am GLAD they didn't make the movie and wreck that as well. The way WOTC jerked Weiss and Hickman around on the novel, should have been a red flag. So sad.

The original Dragonlance module series were the most ambitious ever attempted at that time. The concepts they tried were a bit flawed, but the design and creativity holds up today. With modern gaming tech, the simplest and most successful approach for 5E Dragonlance modules would have been to clean up, converts, and re-publish the first 5 adventures (DL1-DL6). This was a clear miss.

I grew up on Dragonlance. Found it before I found the Forgotten Realms (in fact, I bought my first FR novel thinking it was set in Krynn, the Dragonlance world). While it has the trappings of generic fantasy like FR does, I think Dragonlance brings a lot more originality to the table. The dragonlances themselves, the true clerics, the draconians, they're all unique (and spoilery, so I opted not to go into detail). The anthologies, especially the ones set before/during the Cataclysm, were also really insightful. I agree with Joe: it really is the Star Wars of D&D.
The only FR series I think that could rival Dragonlance's unique storytelling is Raymond E. Feist's The Cleric Quintet series (yep, not Drizzt, though I did enjoy that). The Dragonlance Chronicles and the Cleric Quintet are my most read series from my teen years.

But, considering ow WotC keep 'changing and updating' everything... I'm not surprised they would drop a show from someone who is enthusiastic about what they are writing.
I've noticed that most companies nowadays only seem to hire people who dislike or even outright hate the IP they want something made from.
My advice to this guy would be 'keep writing it. Keep going. Just store it safely, then one day someone might come to their senses and produce it.

My first introduction to D&D, way back when, was the animated series. But my first love was the Dragonlance novels. That made me want to play. I still go back and reread the books every so often.
I wasn't sure what to think when I heard about this being in development, but after watching the interview earlier today, I think it's a big disappointment. I do want to see what he had planned.
Hasbro is doing whatever it can to kill my interest in actually playing D&D. So many companies are doing it better and show more love and respect for the genera and play style.
