It's simple: The "good Stuff" got dowsed in economical Porpose and dealings so they forgot the most important Thing: The love for the Game that comes from People participating.
Different People, different Views. The good, the bad, the ugly - all is part of what makes it great.
The constant reinventing yourself as well along - with - the Game, the Hobby we all have and love.
The Guys working on that Game should be paid - hell, it should be a big Part of their Job Description - for playing it with the Community, GM and stand outside for a Smoke or sit down for a Coke together as one who participate in that Hobby.
Every Creator is bound to its Viewers wishes as well as to his own Tastes and Morales - regardless if it is the Common GM creating a Session for his Players, the Streamers or the Creators of the Game itself.
As the Autocrat ruling has huge Problems with "understanding his People down in the Streets", some old Greeks came up with a Place where People could meet and discuss Topics regardless of their Stand - the Forum.
This has become more and more important and doable with the Internet - so we should use it.
And we did - you did.
And now they do - because noone can rule if the ones ruled do not want to be ruled.
Thus, democracy in a republican style.
      I love it.

If you do any “work” while you’re out there, just gather the facts and promises. I wouldn’t do any analysis and hot-takes until I had time to meditate on what I experienced.
My guess is that there will be a ton of people who attend events during the day, then spend their nights writing articles for their respective publications to be the first ones to share the hot gossip. That ain’t your brand; you give the rock solid, no-frills analysis. Which we love.
Plus, hopefully chilling and calmly taking notes allows you to enjoy the event as a person, not as a “river to your people.”

WotC seems to have a hard time for things not to seem corporate-ee so I suspect this might not be as fun as it seems but this is another moment to see if their actions matches their words. They want to build trust, this is a start. If they just milk this group for ideas for the cost of travel expenses to Washington, it might not seem such a good gesture a year from now.

What a fabulous opportunity, Bob. I had been waiting to see if you would weigh in on the latest One D&D playtest package as I have always appreciated your take on the releases as you are less ... histrionic than some other commentators. Hey what's the worst that can happen you get to go meet some cool people, get entertained at WotC/Hasbro's expense, perhaps be asked to sign an NDA. But on the other hand they might not ask that, almost certainly not given that they have probably asked a number of folks who would be somewhat critical of such a move. Think of it as a bit of a Hobby Holiday, offers like this are once in a lifetime things, so pleased that you are going and really look forward to hearing your tales of a trip cross country and who you got to meet and what you learned ... and I'm a little bit jealous. BTW please look at the new playtest package, not least so that you are fully armed with the latest released information and can ask questions of the design team directly.

  • @cjt2727
    @cjt2727 Рік тому

As someone who has had to attend these kinds of events before, I will offer some bits of advice.
The first is going to be dressed in comfortable clothing, especially shoes. Depending on how long they "tour" you and the group through the facilities and people it can be more steps than you think. Through the fitness app on my phone it was above two miles just walking around at the highest, and there were girls wearing high heels through that. (bless their hearts and soles lol)
Second, be sure to hydrate and eat properly. With all the shoulder rubbing and movement it can work up an appetite fast. Especially if they wine more often than dine it can be rough on a jet lagged or empty stomach. So if you're going to indulge do so properly, or bring an extra Pedialyte or two just I.C.E.
Third and Finally, do go out there to enjoy the experience. Seeing people exhausted after the day's activities and then pull an all nighter just to get a report/video out in the morning can suck all the energy out of a person. Think of it like visiting a theme park: take pictures and videos when you feel they're needed and continue on. There's plenty of modern creators going to this one so there'll be plenty of "evidence" to go around lol.
Hopefully this helps with your trip Bob. Oh, and always check to see if they offer first/business class on the flight time it takes to get there. If you live farther away it gives you a better shot at getting it fully comp'ed. Worst they can say is Economy/No

Back in the early 2000's, the powers that be behind Everquest pulled an oops like this - they refused to listen to players and continued to push a game with stupidly broken mechanics for many key classes. There was a HUGE walk out where a ton of people dumped their subs. The company had a wake up call. And they did a summit just like this.
Let's hope that WoTC and Hasbro by extension learn this lesson well and this summit isn't just a bandaid on the deeper issue. Please use this opportunity to drive home the fact that while we would LIKE for DnD to remain a strong brand, that we, the players don't NEED them at all. They have to go a long way to really repair the breach they created. Time will tell.

Wow, what an exciting opportunity for all invited.
To be clear, this is neither an olive branch, nor a Trojan horse. It is a very transparent play to lock down their social media coverage.
This works in much the same way as it does in video game reviews (see Jim Stephanie Sterling's channel for many entertaining explanations of how this playbook works in that context). There will be many "summits" like this in the future if they continue to use this tactic. By bringing the media's (that's you) access behind the scenes in-house like this, they get to control the guest list. That means, if you're a "wild card reviewer" who might not always give them the kind of coverage they like to see, then maybe you just won't get invited next time.
So what they are paying for is to get you used to being wined and dined, and to get your audience used to the kinds of premium behind the scenes fresh juicy news they are going to share with you. Once you're hooked, they hope you'll say what they want you to say under pain of being cut off. But if you don't willingly submit, then others will. And their channels will prosper as a result instead of yours.
So by all means go. But don't get used to it. And more importantly, don't get used to having the kind of online following that comes with being a source of exclusive insider information. Keep all this in mind, and you will keep your integrity. You'll also be keeping this amazing community healthy in the process!

If it helps, I'm a product analyst for an unnamed company (not wotc).
When previous business decisions fail, corporations look at their leading consumer base and take them for interviews to genuinely "catch their product up" to the needs of their audience.
It's a business expense that most budgets get funding for every 1-5 years. Usually if it's not needed, it gets absorbed somewhere else in a shady way >>
But all in all, I think your skepticism is healthy and the optimist in me hopes that they're actually trying to do good business this time. Have fun bro

Why not? Maybe the conflicted feelings come from some self-imposed feeling of being indebted in some way, like self-obligated to feel particularly grateful. Or maybe it smells disingenious, like a "publicity stunt" trying to claw back approval. But maybe think of it this way:
    - They're not asking for anything from you. So neither do you need to obligate yourself. Take them at their word that you can just go, interact, enjoy and that's it.
    - You don't need to feel *overly* humble or indebted either. After all, they're asking you to come. You didn't plead them to let you in. They're not extending grace and mercy despite not wanting to. This is something they want to host and they're asking you to join. Trust that they have their reasons to do this. I'm not saying those reasons are evil at all, just that keeping that perspective in mind might help with the conflict.
    - And finally, if it, for some reason, would turn out to be somehow disingenious, or you feel weird or awkward in any way, remember that *you can just leave* if you want to. ❤If you can't afford to travel back before the event ends, then just hang out at the hotel with a nice book or see the sights in WA. They can't drag you to the office by force, surely. Of course maybe check that they can't cancel your travel tickets, and maybe bring a credit card just in case.
I once went on a very, very, very cheap off season trip to Turkey. I mean like 500€ for plane tickets from Finland to Turkey, then to Cyprus, back to Turkey and back to Finland, two weeks of hotel stays, buses, breakfasts, tour bus, tourist guide, attraction tickets. Mad stuff. Of course the idea was that we'd buy stuff. On one of the days the tour guide said it's mandatory to go to a jewelry factory and a leather jacket factory. I just told her I'd rather read a book in the bus for this bit, thank you very much. She said I have to go. I told her she can drag me if she wants to try. I had a nice couple of hours with my book. 😁

Three things have happened. The D&D team is now out from under the thumb of some of the C suite people who would have disallowed this last year. Its no longer perceived as a risk.
Secondly they have realized that they don't have a staff member with the wide grasp of the game system, its history and the industry. Those people are the ones that left over the past 3 years. This lack of skill means they need to head hunt the people with those skills, sound them out and eventually offer them jobs or consultancies.
Thirdly they know there is a quality control problem. The other businesses making D&D product don't have that problem. If they had the skills to fix it they would have. They again need to meet, talk and perhaps hire people to fix it. That's a side effect of the second problem.
Yes its late and after a disaster but that disaster may have been necessary to open the eyes of the board at WotC, the Higherups in Hasbro and even Kyles eyes.

With video you may feel a bit more obligated to the idea that it's definitely going to be making its way to your UA-cam when you get home.
