Nahargarh Fort is located on the edge of the Aravalli Hills, and overlooks the Jaipur city in the Rajasthan state. Along with Amer Fort as well as Jaigarh Fort, Nahargarh once used to form a strong defence ring for the Jaipur city. The fort was originally called Sudershangarh, but it eventually became Nahargarh, which means 'abode of tigers'. According to legends Nahar stands for Nahar Singh Bhomia, whose spirit haunted the place and regularly obstructed the construction of the fort. Nahar's spirit was later pacified by building a temple in his memory within the premises of the fort.
Built in the year 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, the then king of Jaipur, the fort was built as a retreat place on the summit of the ridge above the Jaipur city. Walls extended all over the surrounding aravali hills, forming fortifications that used to connect this fort to Jaigarh, the fort above the Amber's old capital. Though this fort was never attacked in its complete history, it did see a few historical events, notably, the treaties with the forces of Maratha empire who warred with Jaipur in the 18th century. During the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the Europeans in this region, including the wife of British Resident, were shifted to Nahargarh fort by the king of Jaipur, Sawai Ram Singh, for their safety.
The fort was elaborated in the year 1868, during Sawai Ram Singh's reign. In 1883-92, a number of palaces were built at Nahargarh by Dirgh Patel costing three and a half lakh rupees. The Madhavendra Bhawan, constructed by Sawai Madho Singh had palaces for the queens of Jaipur and at the head there was a palace for the king himself. The rooms of these palaces are linked by corridors and still have some beautiful frescoes. Nahargarh was also known to be a hunting residence of the Maharajas.
Some scenes in the popular bollywood movies Rang De Basanti, Shuddh Desi Romance and Sonar Kella were shot at Nahargarh Fort.
The ticket for the Nahargarh Fort costs ₹50 for Indian nationals. For foreign tourists, the cost goes up to ₹200 (US$2.50). Students can enjoy discounted prices by showing their ID Card. For foreign students, the ticket costs ₹50 (63¢ US), and ₹25 for Indian students.
Nahargarh fort's opening time is 10:00 am and closing time is 17.30. The visitors are not advised to stay any longer than that because the Nahargarh fort is surrounded by dense dangerous forest. The forest is also part of Nahargarh Biological Park and is home to a lot of wild animals.
