- Logging hardwood (Maple, Birch) and some pulp wood and Aspen with my Massey Ferguson 1648 with a Norse 450 Winch attachment. Also using my Komatsu PC-200 to clean and pile the brush and make logging roads. Nova Scotia, Canada.
Nice setup you have there ,when and if I ever retire I would like to do something like that .Right now I have a mechanical harvesting company with a lot of pieces and headaches.lol
Small logs! No wonder you don't break any chains! I have used 3/8" grade 70 chain to haul 20" diameter, 40 foot long logs.
RHvupper , right now I'm only pulling out hardwood, but I have harvested some large Aspen with an almost 2 foot diameter as well as some big spruce and hemlock. The only time I broke a chain was when I got a dump truck stuck and I was lifting it out with the excavator, lol. I don't think my winch would be strong enough to break one anyway.
I am just curious why you don't use cable chokers?.....nice vid btw.
I had a few choker cables, they worked fine but once they frayed a little they were deadly on the hands. The chains seem to be more widely available here too.
Good point....I hadn't considered that.....thanks!.... Where I work in BC Canada they call those little choker barbs "jaggers" and they are nasty....usually a needle straight to the bone.....I'm just lucky I haven't ever got one infected.
Ohhh yeah, I've had a couple and they friggin hurt! I find that here, in NS, most of the commercial loggers use the cable but almost all the smaller guys and farmers use the chain.
Dangerous cutting technique! He cut through the hinge while felling!
RHvupper might have been a little careless with that one... it was only about 5 inches around, lol
What pat of the province are you in Matthew?
Northern NS, Cumberland County. You must be from the province?
